@Poppiesway1 Hi, I posted late and often do as I'm currently living in Canada so I'm 5 hours behind the UK.
My DS at UEA also has ASD, like most on this thread he is in second year, so has a house share in Norwich. He will go back regardless of what happens to teaching.
I'm glad to hear things are going well for your DS and that he's enjoying the online learning.
It's been a difficult time for them all, some work better with this online teaching than others. I think at least the second years managed to make some friends and feel they have a little bit of student life in their houses, I really don't know how I'd feel if my DS was a first year, I think I'd prefer him at home as his halls last year weren't that good and didn't have the same type of communal spaces that they have in their house.

Hi all, my Dd has just received this from UEA. The vaccine can’t come soon enough for me. I’m optimistic there are better times ahead for our youngsters. I wish you all a happy & healthy new year.

Following the government’s announcement yesterday (30 December2020), the University has received further details in a letter from the Minister of State for Universities, Michelle Donelan MP.

In summary, government has asked universities to:

Limitthe number of students travelling and returning to campus to help reduce the transmission of the coronavirus;

Testthose students who do arrive back and those who remained on campus; and

Supportstudents to stay at home (or at their vacation accommodation) until their face-to-face teaching starts.

The return of students to our campus will be paused until at least the week beginning 25 January - other than those students on specific practice-based courses that require professional accreditation (principally in medicine and health, social work, teacher training and pharmacy).

This is a change to the staggered return of students which we had communicated on the 11 December2020.

Under the government’s new requirements, students are able to return to campus as planned for study activity if any of the following conditions apply:

Students who are on professionally regulated courses in MED, HSC, PGCEs in EDU, Social Work or Pharmacy

Students who are without access to appropriate study spaces or facilities in their vacation accommodation

Students who require additional support at UEA, including for mental health issues

Students who stayed at UEA over the winter break, including international students

Students who are required to undertake on-site learning or exams/assessments in order to qualify with professional accreditation

Researchers and research students who require access to specialist facilities that are only available on campus

International students who have already made travel plans that cannot be delayed

Please note there will be no changes to the online assessments already planned for January - which will continue as scheduled.

The government will be reviewing its approach to higher education again on 18 January2021.As soon as we have further information, we will email all students. We will still need to stagger the return of students to manage travel and ensure that every student can have the required two rapid Covid tests. This may mean that some teaching will need to continue to be online for students in early February (except for those in the programmes identified above).

I realise this news may prompt further questions and require some students to change their travel plans. I hope this email at least provides a degree of clarity and we will continue to keep you informed as further details become clear from the government. Please continue to check theMy UEA portalfor information on returning to campus and testing requirements.

Testing:

If you did book a rapid Covid test that you now need to change you can do so by using the ‘manage booking/change your appointment link that can be found in the booking email confirmation you were sent or via your Outlook calendar appointment.

If you haven’t yet booked your two rapid Covid test three days apart, please do so as soon as you arrive back at University, by following thisrapid testing link.

UEA is focussed on supporting you and ensuring you can meet the academic and practical requirements of your course during this unprecedented time.

Itscoldouthere · 31/12/2020 15:27

Well that's not great news, although expected. I think some second and third years will go back to their houses as being at their family homes just doesn't work for some.
My other DS at Bournemouth has just been told all teaching online till spring term, this is such bad news for him as it really isn't possible to do the work just from home, I feel like to actually get anything from this degree he will need to retake this year, he's effectively only done one proper term and he'll be going into third year with only 2 terms teaching if they do get back into the studio for the last term, his course is usually really intense with many extra hours in the workshop, so there is no way he will get anything near the usual learning experience.
It's really depressed me, I've stayed optimistic for so long, but I just feel like it's all so shit.

sluj · 31/12/2020 16:07

My two just confirmed they are going back 9n Saturday whatever. DS1 is a med student so he is on placement anyway and DS2 is returning to his year 2 house quite happily, he claims he never goes on campus now anyway.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 31/12/2020 16:19

DS told his cousin he'd lost his UEA student card and hadn't been on campus in the past two months at least.

I feel very much for your DS1 @Itscoldouthere. You cannot do the type of degree he's doing without lots of practical work with proper support.

Not exactly the same but a close friend's DS is doing photography/film production in the sixth form. He was expected to limit filming to his house and garden - how exciting (not) is that?

@sluj good for them.

I think there will be more 'drift' university city/town wards from the non-fresher year groups.

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I was feeling a bit Grinch today ☹️ thinking about our DC university experience so far, which has not been what they or we hoped for, but then I saw the 'Clap for Boris' thread, which couldn't help but make me laugh.
You've got to let the small things keep you happy 😁

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 31/12/2020 17:32

I think those at uni currently should all get an extra free year of study but that's in some type of Utopia not the dystopian world we're currently living through.

I understand why you've been feeling Grinch(ish). It's difficult not to. We can only hope for a change of fortune as we welcome in 2021.

Happy New Year everyone! I shall be dancing round our home Glitterball with a glass of Wine tonight. Already getting in the mood listening to my yesteryear favourite songs on Spotify!

Happy New Year to all you lovely folk on this thread, thank you for sticking with it all through this tricky year, you have brought much reasurance and friendship to me through this thread.
Next year has got to be better 💪😍

NotSorry · 31/12/2020 19:59

@Itscoldouthere

2021 has to be better, it can’t be any worse!

I would say reading that email it refers to those who live on campus. DS2 is in a private house and only went on campus for the student union (when it was open) he hasn’t had a single F2F lecture, which I think is pretty poor

icanbewhatiwant · 01/01/2021 09:33

Happy new year to everyone. Let's hope it'll be better than 2020.

Ds hasn't decided when to return yet. He has exams later this month, he thinks he'd rather do those in his house in Norwich.

Apart from dog walks where we don't meet many people, we are quite rural, we have not been anywhere since the younger 2 dc's dentist appointment on 23rd. So at the moment covid is very unlikely for any of us. Ds1 has the dentist on 6th. I did read appointments are still going ahead in tier 4. So until school starts we are hopefully safe.

Ds had a couple of lab sessions in October but apart from those it's been a year now without hands on (strikes jan-March last year) that is a lot of stuff he will never get to do or learn. There may be jobs in the future involving stuff he's meant to have done but won't have. It looks like there won't be any this next term either. I know it'll be taken into account exam wise. But it's still not good. I know everyone is in the same boat.

Let's hope the vaccine helps. Though I can't see us getting it for a long time. Dh is on the slightly at risk group so should get one eventually, probably not until early summer. But I'm under 50. The under 50's aren't currently on the list. I still wish they'd get all teaching staff vaccinated. It makes sense. But no sign of that happening.

Itscoldouthere · 02/01/2021 21:41

DS is now back in Norwich, freezing cold empty house, he video called us in his coat, but he seems very positive.
He's glad to be back, heating is now on and he's sorting out his messy bedroom. One other housemate is due back on Monday, so I think he will be ok.
Hope you have all have a happy start to 2021.

Finallyjoinedmnet · 02/01/2021 22:09

@Itscoldouthere Pleased to hear your DS is back where he wants to be & feeling positive, great news. Wishing you & your family a happy & healthy 2021.

NotSorry · 03/01/2021 09:19

DS2 going back today - told DH to make sure the heating is working before he leaves

sluj · 03/01/2021 12:03

Both mine went back yesterday, both houses smelt horrible but they were quite chirpy about being back.

NotSorry · 03/01/2021 12:32

@sluj

bet they didn't notice the smell Grin
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/01/2021 17:12

I think you definitely notice smells in most student houses, particularly if the last one to leave before the break didn't empty the bins indoors.

DS said there are three back in his house of the five.

It seems as if most of our DC have made the decision to go back (and who can blame them?). I wonder if this reflects the wider picture across the UK for students?

My sister lives with me and has no idea when she’s going back, she is worried we will go into lockdown and all in-person will be cancelled, and she’d rather be here.

She was supposed to be going back this week for exams next week but is really stressed about going into lockdown and being stuck in her room so she’s staying here for exams and I’ll just take my kids out for a walk when she does them. She was then supposed to have labs the next week but got an email saying all in-person is cancelled until the 25th so we’re just waiting to here from her department. It’s really stressing her out

icanbewhatiwant · 04/01/2021 07:03

I said to ds last night that I think we may go into full lockdown. So he needs to make a decision where he wants to be.

icanbewhatiwant · 04/01/2021 12:57

Ds has spoken to his housemates. They've all said they are in tier 4 and not allowed to move house. So they are staying with parents. Ds would like to go to his house really. But not on his own.

CointreauVersial · 04/01/2021 13:16

Afternoon all! I was on the first thread, but sort of "fell off" once DD1 was established at UEA....nice to see you are all still supporting each other.

DD1 is in a shared house (just up the road from University Village, where she was in the first year) and is now itching to get back to her mates, so I'm taking her over this Friday. We are Tier 4, as is Norwich, so I have to assume this does not involve leaving our Tier.

She seems a bit "meh" about all the official instructions about staggered returns, and assumes they don't really apply to her. She has no F2F teaching for a while, but she uses the library quite a lot. She is naturally a bit of a hermit/homebody, so hasn't been too stressed about the lockdown, hasn't exposed herself to any risks, and her housemates (house of 5) are a lovely bunch.

I saw someone upthread mentioning next year's accommodation.....we hopefully don't need to worry about that, as DD1 has her 3rd year abroad as part of her course. Haha, if it actually goes ahead.... She has got a place at the University of Oklahoma, so will be gutted if it falls through. She would also then have to scramble to find accommodation in Norwich for next year at short notice, which wouldn't be ideal. Hey ho.

icanbewhatiwant · 04/01/2021 14:00

I'm sure tier 4 to tier 4 moving isn't a problem. Ds is a bit upset that all his housemates have decided to stay home. He desperately wants to return.

I think we are about to go into a full on lockdown though. So then they won't be able to move back. Speculation on bbc is for full lockdown to start within the next 24 hours ☹️

juicy0 · 04/01/2021 15:26

So another announcement from Boris at 8pm. Will there be any guidance on returning to uni I wonder?

sluj · 04/01/2021 16:19

I'm glad mine went back - lockdown with friends is much more enjoyable than lockdown with parents Smile
Plus I get the broadband to myself which helps with working from home..

icanbewhatiwant · 04/01/2021 16:38

@juicy0 lockdown in the announcement. I expect schools and universities will be told to remain closed.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/01/2021 16:40

I think those that want to go back should get back today if possible, otherwise, they may find they can't.
