A friend took her DD to the offer holder day at UEA at the weekend for chemistry. She said the uni were very open about the financial struggles when questioned, and that the humanity subjects are the ones under threat as the science departments have research funding (currently anyway) to keep them afloat. Such a shame for those departments and students 😞. They suggested that all unis are having similar problems.

Sluj · 20/02/2023 09:32

I think you are right, UEA will just be more open about it.

Wotrewelookinat · 20/02/2023 13:30

I don’t think they had a choice about being open about it as it’s been in the local news quite a bit.

Tumbleton · 28/02/2023 09:32

I think the VC has resigned.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/02/2023 11:58

@Tumbleton yes it was anglia news last night. I am sure ds3's friends mum is his secretary. She lives just up the road. I don't know her very well. But I'd ask her if I saw her.

CointreauVersial · 28/02/2023 13:26

DD1 said all students had an email this morning about the VC resigning. I'm quite sad they're struggling, as I have nothing but good things to say about UEA.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 28/02/2023 13:44

Yes my DD received an email too.

She is a History Masters student-she said she was sure she heard shrieks of joy from her lecturers...

And I also don't have a bad word to say about UEA!

Thelostgirls · 11/03/2023 20:33

Hi, I have been reading all your messages on this chat over the last week - there are quite a few😄 my daughter is currently on a year out and so will be starting uea in September. She will be doing a science subject so hopefully won't be so effected by the financial situation. She is adamant that uea is still for her. Any feedback from your dc regarding the changes would be great.

icanbewhatiwant · 11/03/2023 21:18

@Thelostgirls a friend has a son at UEA. He's the same age as ds2 (first year) friends son is studying Chemistry...he's not had any reduction in lectures/labs etc. also few of ds's friends are there too and seem to be enjoying it.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 12/03/2023 09:04

@Thelostgirls My daughter is doing her Masters there now having also done undergrad there-she is in a subject-History-that has potential to be disrupted but still absolutely loves it.

The staff are very supportive and engaged-she is thriving there!
I 100% recommend!

Thelostgirls · 12/03/2023 09:18

Thank you @icanbewhatiwant
Dd is very much looking forward to going in September, it was by far her favourite university.

I think now the vc has resigned they can get on with sorting out the finances. It does seem as though the staff are happy that he has resigned so a happier atmosphere.

Maybe other universities are in the same situation but it has not been highlighted in the media yet.

SmartHome · 13/03/2023 22:43

Hi All my DS has an offer for UEA for September for Business which he is considering. I hadn't heard about these issues before. Could someone give me the TL,DR couple line summary?

Presumably many unis are feeling the effect of Brexit, COVID, energy costs etc. Was there something specific to UEA?

LouisQuatorze · 14/03/2023 13:06

@SmartHome this article may give you more of an idea of what's been going on: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-64810537

SmartHome · 15/03/2023 23:43

Thank you for the info. It's a real shame and does put me off somehwat for DC starting off on a 4 year course.

LouisQuatorze · 16/03/2023 16:25

The thing is, as previous posters have intimated, it's unlikely that UEA is the only uni in this situation. For whatever reason, it's just more 'out there' about the uni's predicament.

Mismanagement is mentioned in that BBC article, possibly one of the key factors to the uni's economic plight. Plus UEA always seems to me to be a bit of an overlooked university. Also not being a RG uni, and slipping a bit down the league tables in recent years impacted too?

This article is interesting.

LouisQuatorze · 03/04/2023 14:52

That's good news. Thanks for letting us know @Thelostgirls.

boys3 · 26/04/2023 20:57

Any financial issues aside UEA’s various sports’ teams were once again victorious in the annual Derby Day against Essex.🏆

although somewhat bitter suite as it was DS2’s final game for the uni - although ending with a victory.

hope any other DCs playing or watching have enjoyed the day.

LouisQuatorze · 27/04/2023 14:42

Yay @boys3.

Good luck to all the young people about to finish their fourth and final year. The past year has flown by.

LouisQuatorze · 21/05/2023 20:06

Interesting article in The Sunday Times today about the financial crisis at UEA.

boys3 · 21/05/2023 22:08

Quite a depressing read.

CointreauVersial · 21/05/2023 23:46

Yes, I saw that article. I really hope they can dig themselves out of the hole they find themselves in.

DD1 is now into her last week, but they are already warning her that her dissertation might not be marked in time for her to graduate in July. 😒

Wotrewelookinat · 22/05/2023 07:10

The article’s behind a paywall…do you mind saying what is in it? Any new information or have they just picked up on the news from earlier in the year?

boys3 · 22/05/2023 08:34

@Wotrewelookinat this if from the actual print copy
