Congratulations to all those with interviews, and good luck to all those redirected.

No news here!

Knotanothername · 01/12/2020 21:47

@quest1on have pmd you

amadeus1 · 01/12/2020 21:51

@knotanothername unfortunately UCL (strangely enough) doesn't do her course..
Sill hasn't completed her application as unsure about last 1 choice.

Knotanothername · 01/12/2020 21:54

@amadeus1 oh that’s a shame!! But maybe a London Uni thread is a good idea Smile

LaundryFairy · 01/12/2020 22:06

@Revengeofthepangolins

Finally - and DS has an interview. Phew
Congrats to your DS!
bendmeoverbackwards · 01/12/2020 22:15

Yay congratulations @Revengeofthepangolins very happy for you after that wait!

And well done to everyone else who has received an interview.

Pythonesque · 01/12/2020 22:53

@AFingerofFudge

Thanks for all the replies. He has got an offer from Sheffield for Maths with French (4 years, one in France doing Maths) which he is very interested in so hopefully that will work out.

Good luck to all of you x

@AFingerofFudge best of luck to your son. I believe there's still a lot of important maths research published in French so it could be a very interesting combination.

Maths in French - at a high enough level of maths - may not be quite as scary as it could sound though. Some 25 years ago when I was studying pure maths (before diverting to physics then other directions entirely after that ...), I remember having a look at a couple of maths papers in French. My French is decidedly ropey but I found that maths is largely about reading the maths, there isn't necessarily that much non-maths language you need to understand to follow it :)

AFingerofFudge · 01/12/2020 23:00

Thanks @Pythonesque and everyone else who has sent good wishes.
He loves French and is one of the few things that distract him from doing maths (playing football & the piano being the other two!) so I'm hopeful that he'll focus on that a bit more. He was feeling fairly bright this evening (' at least I know now' attitude ) so hopefully we can move on.
Argh why is it so hard being a parent? I just hope my efforts not to be a pushy parent haven't gone too much the other way!!

Pumpkintopf · 01/12/2020 23:06

Agreed, parenting is hard!

Beetlesand · 02/12/2020 08:50

Ooh more interview invites ! Congrats to those dc!
Sorry to hear about those with redirections .. I hope your dc aren’t too disappointed or upset.

As someone up thread said , 2/3 of the remaining dc on this thread will get redirected come January. It still feels very much like a very long shot for Dd.

SATSmadness · 02/12/2020 09:09

Yes, Beetlesand. It's good to remind ourselves and our dc that January could bring news that mean that every application submission/interview is just as important if our dc want to maximise their choices.

DD has her second interview at the end of next week (applying for Medicine so all her Uni choices require an interview) . It's currently her 3rd choice but it still needs preparing for as if it were her only interview because as PP have said 2/3 of our dc (or possibly more depending on subject) will be receiving a re-direction away from their Oxbridge choice come January. Hopefully holding other offers by then will ease the impact of January's post interview e-mail notification.

Eastisup · 02/12/2020 09:21

Congrats to all those securing interviews finally and so sorry for those who's children didn't. What a nail-biting wait! Has anyone still not heard?
Dd's interview time has come through this morning so it's suddenly all a bit real Shock

derekthe1adyhamster · 02/12/2020 09:53

still waiting.....

Eastisup · 02/12/2020 10:05

Oh goodness @derekthe1adyhamster hope it comes through very soon...the waiting is terrible

LaundryFairy · 02/12/2020 10:22

Oh fingers crossed for you Derekthe1adyhamster !

Jano69 · 02/12/2020 13:16

Hope you hear good news soon @derekthe1adyhamster

pourmeanotherglass · 02/12/2020 14:13

Still waiting too but DD subject and college starting to show on spreadsheet. Shes at school this afternoon so may already have the email. She has a mock interview when she gets home today i think.

PortusCale · 02/12/2020 14:48

Well done to those who’ve got interviews and commiserations to those who haven’t - I can recall just how agonising the wait was!

My DS is a first year humanities at Cambridge and I’ve just seen that Gonville & Caius have some online demonstration interviews on youtube/Caius Schools (with current year 1 undergraduates) for History and Maths. Just thought it worth mentioning in case it hasn’t been mentioned before. Apologies if it has. I’ve just listened to them, think they’re really quite helpful.

WarmAndco3y · 02/12/2020 15:32

So sorry for those who have not had they news they wanted, and congratulations to all those with interviews. It’s a hard long road...

There have been a few ‘unexpected’ ( because you can’t really know what to expect even in normal years) redirections in DS’s school. It really is a tough year for them. They’ve done well to get this far.

I love the 5 paths to the same destination, mantra. I give that a solid thumbs up

LaundryFairy · 02/12/2020 15:41

Fingers crossed 🤞 for your DD pourmeanotherglass!

quest1on · 02/12/2020 15:50

Positive vibes to anyone still waiting..., All the best

Vargas · 02/12/2020 15:51

Thanks @PortusCale! How is your DS getting on in this crazy year? Has he had any face-to-face time with tutors/lecturers?

WarmAndco3y · 02/12/2020 16:22

@pourmeanotherglass rooting for your DD. And everyone else waiting, wishing you all the best.

bendmeoverbackwards · 02/12/2020 16:30

Sorry to hear about your ds @olliepolly he sounds wonderful and you are right to be proud of him. I wish him every success.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 02/12/2020 16:31

Sorry for all those who have been redirected and congratulations to those who have finally heard and have an interview.

derek hang on in there, really hoping that it is good news.

@ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie has he talked to you at all about any of it? ie where he applied and why, preferences etc? Would he be open to talking to you? I am assuming you will be supporting him financially in some capacity so surely he must see that you have a vested interest.

Both Dh and I went to uni but had different experiences, ie me poor, self catered, Dh funded by parents/Grandparents and catered. So Ds has talked to us loads about halls of residence, food, money, food, expectations on both sides etc. Did I mention food? Grin
