Congratulations Tenpast and WarmAndco3y! And also Crikey DS on his Durham offer!

I think the admissions admins are getting a shift on now and I’m sure it’s just a matter of time for everyone else....

WarmAndco3y · 23/11/2020 18:29

Thank you all

@LaundryFairy, lol, yes definitely excitement from me. As soon as I saw
him coming, I suspected it was Cambridge news, and I tried to read his expression, but quickly realised he wasn’t playing that game, so I gleaned the email quickly to get the gist, before reading it properly Smile
His that sort of child, he won’t tell you important things by text, and preferably in person instead over the phone. He insisted on showing us his GCSE results too, at the time . Lol!

WarmAndco3y · 23/11/2020 18:30

Congratulations @Crikeyblimey. Well done to your DS

We are still waiting to hear from Durham

WarmAndco3y · 23/11/2020 18:33

He’s

IrmaFayLear · 23/11/2020 18:40

Well done, interviewees ! That’s a foot in the door, or through the computer screen anyway.

It does seem as though the competition is fierce this year - eeek!

ChimneyPot · 23/11/2020 18:49

Well done to all those getting interviews

LaundryFairy · 23/11/2020 18:55

One of DS' teachers has agreed to to a mock with him - know it's not ideal in that the teacher is known to DS, but at least the teacher went to Cambridge and has supported other students' oxbridge applications, so they have a pretty good idea about how it works (certainly better than me).

LaundryFairy · 23/11/2020 18:56

to do a mock

Baaaahhhhh · 23/11/2020 18:59

@WarmAndco3y

He’s
It's OK WarmAndco3y, this is a safe space - we all KNOW you really meant you Grin Grin Grin.

@Tenpastseven and @WarmAndco3y - excited congrats to dc on invitations.

And congrats also to @Crikeyblimey’s dc for Durham. May I ask for a reminder on subject? Unless you’d rather not say, of course.

Tenpastseven · 23/11/2020 19:14

Oh thank you for all the lovely posts. And congrats to @Crikeyblimey on the Durham offer.

@Revengeofthepangolins oh yes, subject reminders would be helpful. DS has applied to read MML (French and Spanish post A level). He’s got a pre-interview assessment on 2nd, a French interview on 8th and a Spanish interview on the 10th.

Crikeyblimey · 23/11/2020 19:27

@Revengeofthepangolins
DS has applied for MML, Spanish and Russian.

jellybeanteaparty · 23/11/2020 19:33

@pythanesque I can confirm from my daughter you can row and be a choral scholar as one is generally very early morning and one in the evening! Not every Choral scholar studies music and not everyone comes from a private school or church background. Good sight singing is required generally. My DD was at a state school and the local very well regarded private school offered mock interviews to local state school Oxbridge applicants - it was nothing like the real one at all but perhaps it meant the relief she felt that the real interview was an academic conversation rather than someone behaving in a very intimidating manor.

WarmAndco3y · 23/11/2020 19:59

@Baaaahhhhh thank you, lol! It’s probably because I’m usually telling DC off.

@Revengeofthepangolins HSPS, here

chopc · 23/11/2020 20:05

@WarmAndco3y what is HSPS?

WarmAndco3y · 23/11/2020 20:12

Human social and political sciences. It’s Cambridge’s equivalent of PPE (Politics, philosophy and Economics).

Jano69 · 23/11/2020 20:35

Many congrats on the Cambridge interviews @quest1on, @WarmAndco3y and @Tenpastseven. Delighted to hear of another Durham offer @Crikeyblimey.

Am I right that Cambridge typically invite 75% of applicants to interview, and Oxford nearer 50%?

DD purposely chose Oxford over Cambridge to get rejected as early as possible - yes, I know that's weird.....

MidLifeCrisis007 · 23/11/2020 20:41

@Jano69 - I think Oxford typically interview 3 candidates for every place. The % interviewed therefore depends on the number of applicants for each subject. (ie it's v low for law, PPE and medicine and quite high for languages, music, theology).

Jano69 · 23/11/2020 20:46

Thanks @MidLifeCrisis007 - looks like we're looking for too much simplicity. I know Oxford generally invite fewer to interview than Cambridge which was why DD chose Oxford.

FrauFreud · 23/11/2020 20:47

For classics at Oxford the number of applicants per place is already around 3 candidates so the compétition really starts at interview. Doesn’t make the wait for interview any less nailbiting...Blush

Congratulations on all offers! Thrilled for all.

FrauFreud · 23/11/2020 20:48

Compétition??? My phone is having a French moment!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 23/11/2020 20:51

Massive congratulations to ten crikey and warm

Feels nice to feel happy for people, even if you are only on the internet and I don't know you all in RL. Grin

Revengeofthepangolins · 23/11/2020 20:52

2019 interview average for Oxford was 53% but as pp says, it varies hugely.

I don't seem to have much luck with linking to the source so will try a direct link and a pdf of what it shows. Fingers crossed
