@NewGirls I disagree that an organ scholar needs to be personally religious. I was church organist as a teenager (and was religious), but now am not. For a while I attended a famous London church that has amazing (professional!) choir and organist. Some in the choir read books during the service, then put their books down when it was time to sing. Being a church organist is a paid role (in most denominations). You can enjoy and appreciate the wonder of this uplifting, numinous music and marvel at the people who created it, their search for meaning in life, etc. I don't believe ALL the composers were necessarily religious themselves, but the commissions in those days were for religious music. All the variations on the mass. If it was merely about religion, one would simply say the words each week. The variations explore deeper meanings, about humanity, life and beyond.
I'd hate to think only true believers felt they could apply to be an organ scholar (or whatever they're called). My query is: must one be a music student to be an organ scholar? I am so glad I ended up not majoring in music (personally).

Congratulations @quest1on DS!

FingernailNibbler · 23/11/2020 14:53

And yes, the choir members had to suppress their giggles whenever they sang the bit about Jordan... maybe something about 'the verge of Jordan'? (This was a few years ago, when Jordan was always in the press.)

@DeRigueurMortis

Eastisup · 23/11/2020 14:54

Fab news @quest1on ! Congrats to your ds!

FingernailNibbler · 23/11/2020 14:55

Also, congratulations everyone who has an interview, and fingers crossed for everyone still waiting. I feel for you. The pressure and worry and wonder and stress are exquisitely painful! Hoping you get good news and soon.

RunnersTipple · 23/11/2020 14:55

Congratulations to your DS @quest1on

SATSmadness · 23/11/2020 15:05

Congratulations to Quest1on's DS !

Very Exciting !

quest1on · 23/11/2020 15:18

Thank you, that’s very kind, although, as I say, I think Cambridge interview pretty much everyone who has the required grades.

chopc · 23/11/2020 15:20

Congratulations @quest1on !

Congratulations to your DS! And his achievement in making it this far is something to be very proud of.

I flipping hope so! Grin Grin Grin
Summer15coming · 23/11/2020 15:39

Ah, congrats, @quest1on !

DeRigueurMortis · 23/11/2020 15:43

@quest1on many congratulations 🥳

What a lovely start to the week.

Here's hoping we see more interviews coming through for the children of other posters

@Knotanothername - thank you for your PM. Very illuminating!

I'm in awe of those C/O scholarship students to be honest. The level of musical/academic prowess required is obviously very substantial, not to mention the level of self discipline and time commitment on top of doing a degree. Incredible!

SATSmadness · 23/11/2020 15:48

Over on TSR (I know, I know, I really shouldn't)

There's an applicant rejected (not invited for interview) by Jesus (C ? ) for Vet Med, A* x 3 + A predicted.

There's one of our confident cousins from across the pond who is very indignant at being rejected for an interview by Trinity for Maths. He has MIT to go for though so not such a total wipeout.

I wish DD hadn't wanted to try for Oxbridge now, with competition for places everywhere so high and high flyers not even getting interviews Sad.

She loved the place though and school had her earmarked for Oxbridge since pre GCSEs.

What a shitty year to be a Y13 Oxbridge hopeful.

bendmeoverbackwards · 23/11/2020 15:49

Well done to your ds @quest1on great news!

SATSmadness · 23/11/2020 15:49

as it looks like this year it's a huge achievement even getting invited to interview in the first place.

bendmeoverbackwards · 23/11/2020 15:50

That sounds very depressing @SATSmadness not even an interview? Sad

I'm nervous for dd waiting to hear from Oxford.

calculatorqueen · 23/11/2020 15:56

Great news @quest1on!

Let's hope the interviews come pouring in this week.

quest1on · 23/11/2020 16:00

I think Vet Med is probably one of the most competitive courses, but I wonder why that Cambridge Vet Med applicant was rejected at this stage SATS? Maybe it was the school reference or PS? Horrible to hear of these young people receiving a no. But I’m sure that young person will go on ti get a 1st elsewhere and to save many animal lives and god knows, the world needs more like that.

Lovecatsanddogs · 23/11/2020 16:07

Hi my dd studying first year vet med at Cambridge. At this stage i imagine applicant didn't do well in NSAA admissions test.

Newgirls · 23/11/2020 16:11

Yes she did meet Anna Lapwood! A fantastic role model for musical kids/girls etc of course

My point about being religious and playing organ is that - why would a musical talent spend their time doing 3-4 years religious choral music if they didn’t love it/mean it?

My dd is very theatrical and loves playing the organ but is being an organ scholar the best use of her time? Probably not. But she would be a huge supporter of friends and colleges who do.

Not many female schools have chapels and organs so it’s a real disadvantage. If you have one in your local church and had a high grade pianist daughter go for it! It would be a wonderful experience playing those Cambridge organs!

SATSmadness · 23/11/2020 16:24

Do you not get to know your NSAA results ? The rejected candidate thinks she did well in it.

Presumably the admissions tests help inform the admissions tutors more realistically than predicted grades with disparity between teachers/schools attitudes to predicted grades.

Looks like BMAT may have been even more important than DD thought.

Revengeofthepangolins · 23/11/2020 16:26

@quest1on So exciting to see invitations start to trickle onto the thread - congrats to him

SATSmadness · 23/11/2020 16:27

@Newgirls

I'm imagining a MN'ers dc at the organ for "Carols from Kings" which I usually have on in the background while wrapping presents each year.
