Unfortunately UCL doesn't quite have the course/subject combination dc wants. She doesn't want the extra language combination.
But she does like the idea of London...

fabtasticmrpox · 20/11/2020 13:53

DeRigeurMortis, great news.

I suggested to dd we could practice zoom calls from different rooms, but was met with a 🙄 . School have it covered apparently!

quest1on · 20/11/2020 13:54

Congrats DeRigeur!

bendmeoverbackwards · 20/11/2020 13:56

@hopelesschildren where else has she applied?

DeRigueurMortis · 20/11/2020 13:56

@bendmeoverbackwards

Fantastic news *@DeRigueurMortis* well done to your ds!

How's he feeling about it?

I haven't spoken to him.

He's at school and has just forwarded the email to me and DH without comment.

I suspect he's playing it cool 😎 Grin.

Knotanothername · 20/11/2020 13:59

@DeRigueurMortis congratulations!
Lovely to hear some good news! DS must be thrilled!

bendmeoverbackwards · 20/11/2020 13:59

Wish him the very best of luck @DeRigueurMortis

Anyone heard anything from Oxford? I know they're later than Cambridge for interviews. Dd seems quite confident she will get an interview, I don't know what to say to her. I don't want to rain on her parade but I want her to be realistic too.

BilberryBaggins · 20/11/2020 13:59

DeRigeurMortis - congratulations to your ds!

Tenpastseven · 20/11/2020 13:59

Oh that’s such great news @DeRigueurMortis Smile.

DeRigueurMortis · 20/11/2020 14:02

Thanks everyone for the congratulations.

One hurdle down but obviously more to come....

Good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear.

hopelesschildren · 20/11/2020 14:06

Ha, dc hasn't actually completed her other choices on UCAS...

Baaaahhhhh · 20/11/2020 14:10

DeRigueurMortis Fantastic news for your DS. First one for this thread. Hopefully many more to follow.

Well done, DeRigueurMortis junior!

UCL has some really interesting-sounding courses but, I agree, the accommodation factor makes it a no no. The London universities must have a problem with the recruitment of “middling class” students, I would have thought.

ChimneyPot · 20/11/2020 14:10

Congratulations DeRigeur.

Very exciting to see interview invites coming.

Baaaahhhhh · 20/11/2020 14:11

I tried to persuade DD2 to apply to London, she could have lived with her big sister...... funnily enough, neither were too keen Grin. Shame.

Congratulations to your DS @DeRigueurMortis. Let's hope there are some more positive updates soon.

Eastisup · 20/11/2020 14:37

Exciting @DeRigueurMortis ! Congrats to your ds! Thank you everyone else for UCL confirmation that others haven't had offers yet either. Am a bit head in the sand regarding the costs at the moment as it's dd's first choice.

quest1on · 20/11/2020 14:38

What seems odd to me about London uni accommodation is these “multi collegiate halls.” There’s a huge one (can’t remember what it’s called but I think it’s on Russell Square). So you could be, for instance, a medic from Imperial, sharing with a load of economists from LSE? Is that how it works? Or do different unis have their own sections? Also there’s that huge glass orb building near London Bridge with beautiful rooms and absolutely amazing views - but his much does that cost? It looks like executive accommodation!

Beetlesand · 20/11/2020 14:39

Am v pleased for your Ds Derig that is excellent news!!
Yes-it does seem like a series of hurdles doesn’t it .. I hope he takes the interview in his stride

Knotanothername · 20/11/2020 14:40

Heard from Dd that her school has a couple of ox PPE interviews today! Otherwise all mostly Cambridge medicine rejections

Knotanothername · 20/11/2020 14:40

Thinking we will start to hear from Monday

Summer15coming · 20/11/2020 15:00

My DS went to UCL and agrees that his university experience was very different to his dad's and my experience at Durham. He was in a Unite halls and did have a couple of other guys in his flat also reading Law at UCL, but didn't really befriend anyone outside of the flat. There were advantages, though. His department rugby team played the magic circle law firms (I'm not commenting on whether there was some equivalent opportunity for female lawyers!), and the law and finance associations both had loads of networking opportunities with fantastic influential people in their fields.

SATSmadness · 20/11/2020 15:06

Ooh, congrats to your ds DeRigeur

DD so wants a Cambridge interview and checking the details online, no invites have been sent out yet for any subjects at her chosen college so no news is good news for her at the moment.

She did have a practice interview after school yesterday and as I feared, certain weaknesses were identified but with little time to get more practice in before her first interview, I am quite worried. She's slow to warm up to newly met people so probably doesn't quickly convince them of her passion for the course or the Uni.

I think we need to go over possible responses to that line of questioning in particular. Once she's on to academic subject matter she should be fine but we're always told that first impressions are usually vital in clinching things (subject to meeting relevant qualifications criteria).

I think she would definitely have benefitted from some interview coaching, if only to put a finger on my concerns sooner and try to address them but there is nothing but a single practice interview offered at her school with no follow up to check for improvement and it's not something we can afford to pay for privately.

DahliaMacNamara · 20/11/2020 15:11

My niece lived at at www.cassandclaredale.co.uk/term-time-accommodation/cass-hall/, which seems much more affordable for London students than many others.

IrmaFayLear · 20/11/2020 16:40

I know what you mean, SATSmadness. Dd isn’t the most outgoing of people (understatement of the aeon) and I worry that she won’t immediately grab the interviewers. Ds in his worst interview said he came across as dull and boring and the interview never got going.
