A friends’ son had his organ place all done and dusted in September but he a post a level applicant.

Organ is great route but I don’t think chiral gets much of a leg up, esp at Cambridge.

Revengeofthepangolins · 20/11/2020 10:00

The f course, you have to have talent, have spent years getting amazing at organ, successfully spot which colleges have an organ space for your skill set and be willing in some colleges to basically have a substantial job not just playing and rehearsing but also to some degree running choirs.

So no easy births available really Smile

Revengeofthepangolins · 20/11/2020 10:08

Ha! Berths. Not births

quest1on · 20/11/2020 10:26

Hi, wow this thread is filling up already!

To the pps, DS is applying to UCL and LSE. Nothing from them, except the initial acknowledgments. I think, last year, LSE sent out a chunk of offers in mid-Dec and another similar-sized chunk in March. UCL, no idea, but I get the impression they offer late. But it probably varies massively, subject to subject.

In other news, DS finally managed to get through in the phone to Durham Shock. This is after about 6 attempts where he has been holding for 40 mins, only to be disconnected (or he’s just given up). They don’t reply to emails on their internal system either. Anyway, they have now confirmed they do in fact have his application and alternative PS and not to worry. Apparently they don’t have time to send initial acknowledgements to everyone (I thought these were done automatically, but there you go). She said they were still replying to emails from October and have a huge backlog!

In terms of C, nothing here, but when you look on the website for his college, the interview date for his subject is still ‘tbc.’ He does know a few at school who have recently received interview dates for the same subject at other colleges though (this is C, not O).

In terms of choral scholarships at C, absolutely nothing happens with this until March. In the miracle event DS received an offer, he would go for a choral scholarship... but obviously not even factoring that in at this point.

Organ scholars are very different as (I believe) they are the only ones allowed to apply for both O and C. They are very sought after, so who knows?

He has had two mock interviews now through the school. One was with a teacher at his school who, shall we say, takes no prisoners (the other one is fine though). The other interview was with teachers from another school (there are about 4 schools round here who link up to do interviews across subjects) and he seemed much happier after that. But most of them obviously don’t even know they will get an actual interview yet...

Knotanothername · 20/11/2020 10:59

We are also UCL and LSE , Dd was told by school that they usually wait until after Oxford have made offers , not sure how accurate that is!

Knotanothername · 20/11/2020 11:00

Could be course dependant

nolongeranoaktree · 20/11/2020 11:07

If it's any help, DC's UCL offer for a science subject came through 2nd week of November last year.

chopc · 20/11/2020 11:07

That may have been true in the past but now the uni's don't know what other universities have been applied for

quest1on · 20/11/2020 11:21

UCL is absolutely massive though, isn’t it. You can combine just about any languages. They look as if they have very flexible programmes. So much going on there. I’m just not sure about the student experience at UCL as it’s so huge and many students may need to move quite far out after the first year to afford accommodation. We only live a few miles away - so would he end up moving home in that kind of scenario? Confused Yikes!

I think LSE feels a bit smaller and more ‘containing’ maybe and I love how there’s so much overlap between courses. It just feels buzzing around there and I like their mini-campus. But god knows what happens with accommodation.

Knotanothername · 20/11/2020 11:28

Omg the accommodation in central London is so expensive. We live closer to the Unis than the student accommodation in some cases, Dd was horrified when I suggested she live at home!

quiltdig · 20/11/2020 12:15

Sam here. No update from UCL

Revengeofthepangolins · 20/11/2020 12:41

I wish UCL was somewhere other than London :-). The history course looks fabulous - huge range of periods right back into ancient and loads of flexibility and the early “how to do history at uni” modules look v helpful.

But like previous posters, it really sticks in the craw to pay £12k for accommodation that is probably further from the university than our house, or not far off, and I worry about hoe the student experience works.

Probably just a failure of imagination on my part - if I wanted some fun as a student I would just go to the college bar and see who was in - I can see DS doing this. I can’t imagine him arranging “right, let’s all meet up at the Kings Arms in whatever street at 7 on Tuesday”.

Having said all of which, a chum with a fresher at UCL says her daughter has had a good time this term, with lots of college sport and their accommodation (perhaps because mixed colleges son no one particularly in charge?) isn’t being polices the way some other universities’ seem to be.

LaundryFairy · 20/11/2020 12:48

Revengeoftheoangolins Wholeheartedly agree! DS loves the look of UCL's history programme for all the reasons you mention, but my god it will cost a small fortune to send him there (unfortunately we are not close enough to even consider living at home).

Revengeofthepangolins · 20/11/2020 12:53

Neither DS or my husband are willing to contemplate him living at home. Then again, perhaps DH doesn’t know what accommodation costs.....Smile

Revengeofthepangolins · 20/11/2020 12:54

More seriously the other factor is that UCL would have to be a firm as I am concerned that if living in London and insurance, one might get no accommodation at all

LaundryFairy · 20/11/2020 13:11

DS has UCL and Oxford as his joint favourites at the moment, so if (as is more likely) he doesn't get Oxford but gets UCL, it would be his firm choice, so he would qualify for accommodation for the first year at least.

We've talked to DS about the possibility of him living at home while studying (if neither Oxford nor UCL come through) and he wouldn't mind for the first year until he found people he wanted to share with.

Knotanothername · 20/11/2020 13:12

Has anyone heard anything this morning?

Knotanothername · 20/11/2020 13:15

@LaundryFairy although add has LSE as her second choice she is far more drawn to the course At UCL, it really seems they can accommodate almost all combinations if subjects.
Dd applied for IPSE which is basically PPE but she can do it with Spanish and Chinese which is incredible

Beetlesand · 20/11/2020 13:37

Dd has heard nothing from C apart from an email with a survey attached

whiteroseredrose · 20/11/2020 13:38

Knotanothername the accommodation prices in London put us off too. Not just university accommodation but later years living out. We were glad when DS didn't go to Imperial. Oxford accommodation has been relatively cheap compared to his friends' accommodation elsewhere. That's why DH wants DD to go 😂.

bendmeoverbackwards · 20/11/2020 13:45

Just checking in, hope everyone is ok.

UCL is a great university - I went there in the early 90s (Chemistry) and loved it. My dd only considered it very briefly as we live in London and she wants to experience living in a different city.

Yes the living costs are very high. I lived in a halls of residence just off Tottenham Court Road and it was fantastic being in Central London with everything on your doorstep.

DeRigueurMortis · 20/11/2020 13:46

Well breaking news here.

After the "save the date" email yesterday, DS has just received an update confirming he will need to do the pre-interview assessment next week as they can now confirm he will be invited for interview (date to be confirmed shortly).

Addition info has been provided re: the assessment (log ins, passwords, tech info etc).

We're going to try and practice the tech with him over the weekend "zooming" him from different rooms.

Hope others have also got some good news Grin.

(For context this is Cambridge, Maths).

bendmeoverbackwards · 20/11/2020 13:50

Fantastic news @DeRigueurMortis well done to your ds!

How's he feeling about it?

mikeandike · 20/11/2020 13:52

@DeRigueurMortis Huge congratulations to your DS, you must be so relieved!! Grin
