Anyone else's DC starting at Warwick this September?

DS is going to do PPE. He's my eldest so this is new for us all.

@DuckyMcDuck my daughters corridor was deserted when I dropped her yesterday. She spent last night at a riotous corridor party and played beer pong until 2am. Appearances were obviously deceiving!

DuckyMcDuck · 27/09/2020 11:15

Thanks @ErrrrIDontThinkSo, got a text this morning saying he'd had a really good evening so I feel a little better.

@DuckyMcDuck Phew! That's a good start. This is a very strange time isn't it......

truelove · 28/09/2020 16:54

Dropped DS off yesterday. Agree a very smooth process and after unloading the car, parked in another car park for a few hours to help him get his room set up etc. Met a couple of his flat mates who seemed lovely. Quite a few from his sixth form (and his GF) have gone to Warwick so he’s lucky to already have friends there. Presumably they’ll be able to meet up centrally in groups of 6. No timetable yet so no idea if he’ll get any face to face teaching - anyone else heard?

Frazzled6 · 28/09/2020 17:00

Dd has one f2f session each week and 4 labs per term everything else online.

TAmumto3 · 28/09/2020 17:01

DD doing modern languages... 7 hours face to face a week.

DuckyMcDuck · 28/09/2020 19:31

DS has a PPE welcome online lecture/intro tomorrow so hopefully will have more details then.

Hi all, just wondering how all your DCs are getting on? DD seems to be doing well and enjoying herself, all her flat mates are nice and good company so all good at the moment. It’s reassuring for me.

Frazzled6 · 03/10/2020 20:47

Dd seems to have settled in well too with a lovely bunch of housemates. Hoping that she regulates the late nights (after 5 x 4am). Crossing fingers that covid stays away and course goes well.

ErrrrIDontThinkSo · 04/10/2020 12:25

@Frazzled6 I wondering if our DDs are in the same corridor 4/5am bedtimes every night here too!

DD is having a blast, and is really looking forward to starting work next week. We are really impressed that she still has f2f hours on the timetable too.

Frazzled6 · 04/10/2020 13:25

Dds in one of the townhouses and they seem to be keeping to their bubble of 12 which isn't easy to do given that most places will only take a group of 6! Im just happy that she seems settled and they do seem to be making the most of difficult times. She's also adapted well, she's done two lots of washing and cooking from stratch.. Best investment definitely the Wok!

No doubt has hangover today because they are out having bottomless lunch.

What course is your Dd on @ErrrrIDontThinkSo?

Hope everyone else is doing OK!

Maladicta · 04/10/2020 17:51

All good, the accommodation is further out but right next to Cannon Park so has its advantages! He's playing lots of football with his flatmates and has met up with the two others from his school who've gone there.

He's joined a couple of socs but did say it all feels a bit flat at times. One saving grace is the pre-launch download of FIFA 21 landed this week - if there'd been more stuff organised he would have been conflicted about how to spend his time Grin

He still doesn't have a timetable - have your dcs got theirs yet?

lovefizzycolabottles · 04/10/2020 18:37

A bit of a flat start for DS (there was no-one on his AV corridor when we arrived) but over the next couple of days they turned up - phew. Really likes his flatmates and they seem to be having lots of fun. He has also ventured into Lem and Coventry as campus life seems a bit limited and there wasn't much f2f freshers stuff organised (compared to other unis). He is doing maths and messaged me today (timetable only just came) to say he has 4 hours f2f which is a great relief to us all. He joined the gym today so is chuffed to have that on campus. Overall very relieved with how the first week has gone.

DuckyMcDuck · 04/10/2020 18:43

DS is also in AV @lovefizzycolabottles - his group have also been into Coventry and Leamington - how funny if they are on the same corridor. Grin

ErrrrIDontThinkSo · 04/10/2020 18:58

@Frazzled6 She is doing maths 😊

@lovefizzycolabottles DDs AV corridor was pretty empty too - except one girl who said "I'm so glad people are arriving - it's so lonely"

Frazzled6 · 04/10/2020 19:04

Dd seems to be in a house with Law, Economics and Maths students... No science housemates which is a shame because she's got the walk up Gibbet Hill to her tutorial (just 1 a week). Labs start in November I think.

Her group are tending to also venture into Coventry and Leamington because too quiet on site. She has been going to the gym and I think they also hired the bikes.

It's great to see do many of the DC settling in well.

DuckyMcDuck · 07/10/2020 16:45

Just spoken to DS and apparently 4 of the 9 corridors in his block have positive cases and are self-isolating. I did suggest he goes to Tesco sooner rather than later!

OP posts:
Frazzled6 · 07/10/2020 17:21

I think Warwick are being very cagey about releasing stats... They said only 10 positive cases on site as of 5/10.

truelove · 07/10/2020 21:23

Have had a message from DS this evening saying he isn’t feeling great but no Covid symptoms. He knows lots of people who are currently self-isolating because someone in their flat has tested positive. And so it begins Sad

Keepawatch · 07/10/2020 22:05

Flats with no symptoms/no positives next to ones that have a positive case are having to self isolate too. Must stay in room at all times except for cooking in kitchen, no socialising with kitchen bubble.

truelove · 07/10/2020 22:14

Oh dear, DS didn’t mention that. He did talk about an isolation hotel for those that test positive. Not sure if it’s an actual hotel.

Keepawatch · 07/10/2020 22:42

@truelove hope your DS is feeling better soon and doesn’t have COVID 🤞Re: an isolation hotel, I think I read somewhere that those in shared bathroom accommodation who test positive would be moved to an en-suite room for their self isolation.

truelove · 07/10/2020 22:56

Ah ok, that makes sense. He’s got an en-suite so wouldn’t need to move then if it came to it. Guess he’ll just have to see if he develops symptoms. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was part of the plan - get all the students to catch it back at university by mixing 8-12 from different households in new flats/houses, build some herd immunity and then they won’t be infecting the wider community when they return home at Christmas. In DS’s words, it’s spreading like wildfire through the university.

DuckyMcDuck · 08/10/2020 07:52

That seems a little unlikely as that means all 5 are in DS's block Hmm

Sorry, meant all 10!
