DS has 4 offers outstanding. Will we hear before 15 Jan or will they wait till after the deadline now?

oneofthegiantsisme · 07/01/2020 17:44

Well DS has had his first offer in today - BBB from UEA, which he's hoping to use as his insurance offer (it's the standard offer, but the lowest one he applied for). Huge relief to have something at last!

He's been off a lot with depression, so I empathise a lot with you, thesunwillout - I'm hoping this will help things keep moving upwards so that he actually achieves his predicted grades.

MillicentMartha · 07/01/2020 18:07

Glad there are some offers on the table. I wonder if some will wait until after 15th Jan now? DS got his form in before half term and got offers fairly quickly but it does seem to depend a lot on course and uni. His offers were all standard, though.

Flowers to all DC living with depression at this stressful time. And to their DPs as well of course

ThisIsSharonVanEtten · 07/01/2020 18:24

JufusMum DDs offers are pretty much the standard. However one of her friends has an unconditional unconditional from Keele. I can’t remember now if it was for psychology or law (she kept changing her mind) but it was a huge relief for her because her predicted grades are not stellar.

specialted · 07/01/2020 19:37

Hi all, have been lurking on this thread. DS has all five offers, some really nice ones e.g. birmingham. He has really bad OCD though and struggles so much in exams, he just cannot finish the paper. Mocks started today and he only completed about 60% of his first one as he ran out of time. He gets rest breaks but they don't really help. Im v concerned although his predictions are good he won't actually get the grades because of it.

MillicentMartha · 07/01/2020 19:57

Does he get extra time as well, specialted? It must be so frustrating for him (and you.)

OP posts:
specialted · 07/01/2020 19:58

No unfortunately not, apparently his processing speeds are too high for extra time, all v frustrating as that's what he really needs.

oneteen · 07/01/2020 20:30

I sympathise @specialted its such a shame when DC doesn't have enough time to finish a paper. My DD used to struggle quite a bit with subjects that were essay-based...she's fine now she is doing all sciences.

Physics and Biology mock paper 1's tomorrow ... I've only seen DD at feeding times in the last few days.

MillicentMartha · 07/01/2020 20:32

My DS2 had that issue. He has ASD and actually qualified for a scribe and a promoter but not for extra time for his GCSEs. He did a BTEC (mainly assignments) and now is doing an HND that has no exams.

Second maths paper and computer science tomorrow. DS3 is as chilled as ever...

specialted · 07/01/2020 21:00

Millicent, ds also qualified for a scribe but not sure how that was going to help him! He has history tomorrow and politics on Friday then the same again next week. He has an Interview at Lancaster at the end of the month for a possible unconditional which would change everything for him. Trying not to get his or my hopes up too much in case it doesn't happen!

suze28 · 07/01/2020 21:40

Jufus our DD had one completely unconditional offer from Uni of Gloucs and an unconditional from Uni of Worc if firmed with their lowest offer in the range otherwise.

Ginfordinner · 07/01/2020 22:16

I thought universities were going to crack down on unconditional offers. There still seem to be a lot being handed out.

MillicentMartha · 07/01/2020 22:35

I’ve heard of a few from Lancaster, but most seem to be from universities that are generally giving out lower offers. It’s a low birth rate year and they need students for the courses to be financially viable.

As much as it takes the pressure away, my worry would be that students might be tempted to take their foot off the gas for their A levels. With 75% of students getting 2:1 or a 1st, A level results are still important for their future job prospects.

Ginfordinner · 07/01/2020 23:10

Lancaster is a highly regarded university. I don't know why they feel the need to hand out unconditional offers. Although DD applied post A levels and was offered a scholarship.

Notsureabouthis · 07/01/2020 23:17

Hi all, I’ve been lurking a while!

Brilliant to hear the offers coming thick and fast. Good luck to all those sitting exams in the next few weeks. Thinking too of those struggling. 💗

We finally have some offers (after a fairly late UCAS application late December).
CCC Royal Holloway integrated foundation History (standard offer)
BCC Reading Ancient History and History

Also Cardiff but can’t get into UCAS to read what the offer is!

DS taking a gap year anyway but it’s great to have some offers, especially that Reading one which was a nice surprise.

specialted · 08/01/2020 06:38

I totally agree with you all about unconditionals possibly resulting in lower a level grades and tbh am not a big fan of them. But DS fell in love with Lancaster at the open day before the word unconditional was mentioned and if he was given one then he would welcome it with open arms as it's his first choice. I think they are only considered for one of they have pretty flawless GCSEs and predictions exceed course requirements etc . Plus as he wants to do Spanish and history, I think languages aren't that popular at the moment so may help.

TheDrsDocMartens · 08/01/2020 08:42

Languages here too so hoping that helps!

wineoclockthanks · 08/01/2020 09:49

So DS finally puts his 5th choice in and having spent 2 months trying to decide between York and Nottingham, plumps for..... Loughborough!
WTF goes on in teenage brains eh?

aibutohavethisusername · 08/01/2020 10:26

Does anyone else’s DC have to do a piece of work for UCL to get a reduced offer?

JufusMum · 08/01/2020 11:51

Does anyone know if you have to pay deposits on accommodation for both firm and insurance choices? Assuming one will get refunded ?

MarchingFrogs · 08/01/2020 12:17

JufusMum, check the details for each individual university, e.g. Birmingham only asks for money once the confirmation of a room is sent out, which is not before late July even if you hold an unconditional offer. (Which is what both DS1 and DD had, so although I know when they do / don't want money from you, I'm afraid I don't know whether one can / must apply for accommodation on the same timescale if an insurance place holder. I do know that there is not one uniform system even for all firm / UC applicants across different universities, thoughSmile).

Hoghgyni · 08/01/2020 12:17

I don't think so Jufus. It's just a mad scramble in August.

Wine is he sporty?

FrenchyQ · 08/01/2020 12:27

Dd got her offer from Portsmouth, a conditional DMM but will convert to unconditional if she makes it her firm choice.
She was very happy as Portsmouth was her favourite anyway
