£37.98 is the return cost for a randomly selected (albeit cheapest option) return easyjet flight to Newcastle from Down South in Feb. I booked a flight for around that cost for DS's Durham graduation in July. Bargain.

goodbyestranger · 05/01/2020 19:36

Ok so LHR will be more pricey. We slum it.

mimbleandlittlemy · 05/01/2020 20:41

£88.47 return from LHR to Newcastle but last flight is a rather useless 16.55. I don’t know how far the airport is out from the city but that’s not going to work if the last thing finishes at 4pm. So back to awaiting notifications from LNER.

teawithlotsofmilk · 05/01/2020 22:02

@mimbleandlittlemy my DD has that exact same one too BBB if out as first choice. What languages does you DS do? My DD does French and Spanish. I wouldn't worry about the train tickets, they will release them soon enough. Looks like it will be a longer journey time in the 15th,bur there shouldn't be any issues. We use LNER all the time to get to my in laws in Edinburgh, so I am used to the oddities of that train line! The airport is a few miles out of the city, DH used it this year actually. It is a really easy ride in the metro I think around 20 mins or so...

mimbleandlittlemy · 05/01/2020 22:38

ds is applying for German and ab initio Japanese but will go in 2021. Spending gap year working in UK then spending time in both his language countries - or that’s the theory. If he goes to Newcastle he is very tempted to take the Dutch credits that can go with German too. Would your dad think of doing the Catalan?

mimbleandlittlemy · 05/01/2020 22:39

DD not Dad. Bloody iPad.

PBLR · 06/01/2020 11:58

Any financially savvy MNet's out there please?
We have DD 1 at uni in yr2 atm
DD will go to uni in Sept 2020.
DD1 has got the fees loan ( 2 years worth now).
In Sept we could possibly fund DD2 ourselves.
We could also consider paying off DD1's fees by using a low borrowing rate as part of our mortgage facility.
About 5 years from now we would all(DC's included) be debt free.
Question: is this a sensible plan given that the Auger report seems to have moved seamlessly from the long grass to the compost heap and paying high interest rates on the student loan system looks expensive over time for DC's with earning upwards of 45K pa in the longer term?
I appreciate that not everyone can consider this approach but would be pleased to get the view of someone with more financial knowledge.
Sorry if this is the wrong thread, I'm still quite new to MN.

Not something I could afford, TBH, but have a look at the Martin Lewis website re student loans. He gives some advice on this topic, I believe.

Well, DS is back at school today. It’s mocks all this week and start of next and they’re on study leave, only going in for exams. DS has worked consistently over Christmas, 3 hour long slots a day except for Christmas Day, which is really good for him.

He has all his offers and we’re doing a few offer holder days in the next couple of months to help him decide.

@PBLR

www.moneysavingexpert.com/students/should-i-get-student-loan/

This should tell you whether it’s a good idea. There are some cases where it is recommended, have a look at the scenarios further down the page.

Thanks Millicent - looks like the savings account system is best for us atm.so pleased to have checked it TY

oneteen · 06/01/2020 20:00

DD had a very quick offer for Pharmacology - within 24 hours but her predicted grades are much higher than the standard offer...

Mocks start on Wednesday ...she's worked really hard since the end of last week ...difficult first day with two exams and then just one a day until they finish next Tuesday.

MillicentMartha · 06/01/2020 21:46

Gosh, that was quick, oneteen!

SisterAgathaVanHelsing · 07/01/2020 07:44

Is anyone's DC doing Cambridge Pre-U Physics? DS has to choose a topic for his personal investigation and has no idea what to do. I can't find much about it out there.

MillicentMartha · 07/01/2020 07:54

No, but could he do something simple, like investigating resistance of different wires, various materials, various diameters, various lengths? Would be simple to get the materials from school. Or does it need to be more complex?

OP posts:
SisterAgathaVanHelsing · 07/01/2020 07:58

More complex I think but will mention. Thanks.

MillicentMartha · 07/01/2020 09:59

How about investigating measuring G by freefall using lightgates and various objects, ball bearings, wood blocks etc?

OP posts:
oneteen · 07/01/2020 11:14

Not sure whether any help @sister but maybe look at the experiments on the other A level boards and doing something similar - then at least you know that its A-Level standard. These details are normally shown in the Syllabus e.g. Newtons Law/Car Safety etc

MillicentMartha · 07/01/2020 12:05

How about using conductive paper and investigating the change of resistance with shape. So more complex than wires of uniform diameter, he could look at triangles etc?

JufusMum · 07/01/2020 14:33

So DD received an unconditional offer from Uni of South Wales, which is her insurance choice. I asked her to check with her teacher that it was not a conditional offer and that she would have to accept it as her firm choice.
Turns out it is a completely unconditional offer, and she can accept it as an insurance place.
Has anyone else had this happen before as I have not heard of this?

MillicentMartha · 07/01/2020 14:41

Wow, JufusMum! No, that's pretty unusual. If it's her insurance choice anyway, that's amazing!

OP posts:
HesMyLobster · 07/01/2020 16:07

Wow @jufus that's brilliant, what a lovely position to be in! Smile

DD has had an email from Liverpool today - they originally offered her AAB in October but today have reduced it to BBB. She was planning to put it as her insurance so she's very happy with that!

thesunwillout · 07/01/2020 16:10

So DD, despite weeks off college due to another bout of depression etc, got an A in sociology mock, and a C in English literature.
I know she's pretty upset with the English but she got a B in one paper and a C in the other. At least she's passed.
I'm hoping she gets pointers as to where she dropped marks in the second paper.
It was actually the A level paper from last year, and many found it difficult.
I'll see how she is when she gets home.

FabTab · 07/01/2020 16:59

Great news @HesMyLobster and @JufusMum. Hoping my DS will get an offer soon.

TheDrsDocMartens · 07/01/2020 17:34

I’ve got dd2 applying this time.dd1 in her second year and I only graduated the year before she went so we’ve had a long run of student finance 😭😭😭

Dd2 has 4 Uni’s on her form. One offer, one interview to come, nothing from the others yet.

Can’t find a 5th that fits the bill. Struggled with 4!!
