Amiunreasonabletohavethisusername

A couple of people at DD's school for this a couple of years back. They sent the piece of work in but did not get any acknowledgement. I did hear that on results day one person got rejected despite getting the results - they couldn't find the work. All sorted with a phone call and resending the work to the admissions tutor.

mimbleandlittlemy · 10/01/2020 11:54

thesun - ds applied for Modern Languages.

thesunwillout · 10/01/2020 15:43

Ok, thanks, sorry I got the end of your username wrong.
Good luck to him. DD has visited Cardiff, we know the city quite well but she can't remember having got an offer holders day invite, did your Ds get one?

MillicentMartha · 10/01/2020 16:49

thesun sometimes it’s worth googling ‘offer holders day’ for the uni you’re wanting to see. They may have a page with a section saying, ‘you should have been sent an invitation, click here if you haven’t’ etc. That’s how we booked DS’s day at Nottingham. Never did get an email...

Hi MillicentMartha, I think I did look during Xmas hols, will check again or ring them.

MillicentMartha · 10/01/2020 16:57

Alternatively, check spam or ring admissions. It would be a shame to miss out. Some uni depts only hold a couple of visit days.

Oops, crossed with you! Smile

DD never got one from Nottingham either. In the end she took a gap year and went elsewhere.

HuaShan · 10/01/2020 18:38

DS has had a slightly revised offer from Warwick removing the STEP requirement which pleased him today. He says he might still take STEP anyway though Hmm

TheDrsDocMartens · 10/01/2020 18:52

@mimbleandlittlemy my eldest is at Cardiff doing languages. It’s a lovely department and staff seem to be supportive. I liked their post-Brexit plan for year abroad as when we looked no one else had one then.

Ginfordinner · 10/01/2020 19:21

I am getting the impression from this thread that universities are getting desperate.

TheDrsDocMartens · 10/01/2020 19:34

Depends on subjects and uni.

MillicentMartha · 10/01/2020 19:39

No, I don’t think so. We are only a small group, not necessarily representative. And HuaShan’s DS has done brilliantly in MAT, so doesn’t need STEP. It is a low birth rate year, though.

On a similar vein, my DS’s best friend has just got an unconditional from the University of Gloucestershire to do psychology. TBF, their standard offer is BBC. It does make me feel a bit envious as DS hasn’t had anything like that sort of offer. But DS has only applied to RG unis for competitive courses so it’s not surprising really.

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2020 20:00

Are the MAT results out?

MillicentMartha · 10/01/2020 20:04

I might have been extrapolating from the fact he got an Oxford interview, goodbye. Grin

I know of a couple of students who didn't get any offers at all.
I think some reduced offers could be for lower uptake of certain courses.
Also some combined degrees.

Cafeconleche · 10/01/2020 20:31

It’s been such a long time since I last posted on here - my DS had some serious MH issues during his first year at 6th form college which resulted in a couple of hospital stays, taking an 8 month break from studies and eventually repeating Year 12. For quite a while we really couldn’t see a light at the end of a very long and very dark tunnel. Fast forward to December 2019 when he submitted his UCAS form and within a week he’d had 5 offers from Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, UEA and Sussex, ranging from AAB to BBB. Most of the offers days are in Feb and one in early March and he’ll make his decision on his 2 favourites once he’s visited them all.
We still have a long way to go (not least with the bloody A Level exams themselves!) but I’m so immensely proud of him and of how far he’s come.

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2020 20:53

Very glad to hear things are looking up for your DS Cafeconleche, and very sorry to hear of his difficulties.

Hoghgyni · 10/01/2020 20:53

& so you should be cafe. It sounds as though he has done himself around as well.

MillicentMartha · 10/01/2020 21:11

That’s great, Cafe! What subject is he applying for?

Thanks everyone for your lovely replies Smile American history with a year in the States, Millicent

mimbleandlittlemy · 10/01/2020 21:45

thesun - don’t know when the offer holder day is for ML at Cardiff. He is going to Newcastle and Birmingham OHDs and has a Manchester interview at the end of the month. He is very likely to Firm Newcastle and put either Manchester or Birmingham as insurance tbh, unless Manchester makes a very attractive offer after interview (or Birmingham drop their offer at which point he would bite their arm off).

specialted · 10/01/2020 22:20

Cafe that course sounds great. Ds has offers from Birmingham and Notts for history and Spanish , he liked both of them equally and we will do both offer holders days before making a final decision (along with Lancaster) . A levels also going to be an ordeal with us too.

MillicentMartha · 10/01/2020 22:23

A year in the States sounds exciting!

DS had an interview at Manchester, then almost immediately got their standard offer. I don’t think he’s going to get any reduced offers, except for the one he’s got but doesn’t want, reduced if firm from Cardiff. Sad

HuaShan · 10/01/2020 22:32

Millicent is being lovely goodbye MAT results are not published. However universities have had them since late Nov and we assume DS did well as he got a low Bath offer and Imperial College also offered very promptly. Tbf he loves a maths exam so would probably have taken STEP if he had to!
