Sounds perfect Gatekeeper. Can Newcastle be a bit of a party uni, though? I'd see if they do 'quiet' accommodation, lots of unis do. Universities seem to be pretty good at supporting those with extra needs, but only if they know about it. When your DD gets around to applying for student finance (doesn't open until Feb) make sure she applies for DSA, Disabled Student Allowance. And get on to the disability support peeps, they'll be really helpful.

My DS2 has ASD but couldn't have coped with uni. (Or got the grades required!) He goes to a local college and is doing an HND. They are OK at supporting him, were great at further ed stage, not so good at higher ed, but unis are generally better equipped and resourced.

Wonder if any of you can help? Ds is currently is allowed to use a laptop for note taking and exams, how would we get this carried on at university? He was assessed as having slow processing speed prior to GCSE's but I wasn't sure if it has to be more severe to achieve the same for degree level

MillicentMartha · 19/12/2019 13:19

Again, apply for DSA and talk to the support services at the universities, find out what evidence they need.

Many thanks

FabTab · 19/12/2019 13:33

Application now in so keeping fingers crossed that DS gets offers soon

LIZS · 19/12/2019 16:05

@Lightuptheroom he may need a post 16 assessment but it depends if he has a medical diagnosis which can be carried forwards. Otherwise uni may do its own assessment but there can be a wait initially. Definitely tick dsa box to flag it.

Lightuptheroom · 19/12/2019 16:09

No medical diagnosis, it came about as he was constantly running out of time in written exams and his writing is appalling. School senco did an assessment which then meant he was allowed to use a laptop in exams providing he uses it habitually in lessons

LIZS · 19/12/2019 16:58

If it is only laptop use you won't need a formal assessment, if dc needs deadline extensions, extra time or exam adjustments then probably. Worth ticking DSA and asking potential uni Learning Support departments for advice. DSA may enable him to be supplied with dictation/recording software for lectures and seminars and a mentor, for example, to help with organisation, study skills and managing workload.

York have sent their offer for history AAA or A*AB or AAB all with an A at EPQ, predicted was ABB so D's now thinks they don't want him, is it worth him contacting the department?

MarchingFrogs · 19/12/2019 19:00

Contact the department to say what, exactly? If any of those variants is higher than the typical offer stated by the department, then possibly, yes, check with them whether there is a reason for his offer being higher. But if what is being asked for fits with the typical offer stated, then they aren't necessarily going to drop this just because an applicant decided to apply with predicted grades that are lower.

If they really didn't want him, they could have just rejected him.

Lightuptheroom · 19/12/2019 19:09

I don't know Marching, he's my only so new to all this, he's gone into a bit of 'eeyore' mode so not sure how to encourage him when he's inclined to go into 'whats the point' mode instead

Hoghgyni · 19/12/2019 19:52

Lighting York have given your DS their standard offer for history, which simply means that they want him, but only if he achieves the same grades as the majority of other applicants. They are giving your DS the chance to go there, do if anything, it shows that York fo want him by not rejecting him outright.

Wintersnowdrop · 19/12/2019 19:58

@Lightuptheroom you can check info about courses and requirements here www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/courses/details/54952414
Has he applied to any other Universities with lower entry requirements?

Lightuptheroom · 19/12/2019 20:23

Thanks, college kept telling him he would more than likely get a slightly reduced offer, but hey that's life, it's still very much an offer and he's got 5 offers in total, he needs to get over himself!

MarchingFrogs · 19/12/2019 20:38

Essential Subjects:History or Classical Civilisation (or equivalent) at grade A is essential.

Is his 'A' prediction in History?

goodbyestranger · 19/12/2019 21:16

Hoghgyni is exactly right.

Lightuptheroom · 19/12/2019 21:40

Yes, the A prediction is history, other subjects are English Lit and Product design

Lightuptheroom · 20/12/2019 06:07

And big thanks to all of you for your help

mimbleandlittlemy · 20/12/2019 11:54

Letter this morning from Cardiff dropping their offer to BBB if DS makes them his Firm, so he now has Cardiff and Newcastle both offering a drop. If Birmingham would just do that he'd bite their hand off, though he's also waiting to see what/if Manchester offer after their interview next month.

Still nothing from Warwick. I presume now they are waiting until after 15 Jan and waiting to see just how many 2021 applicants they have but I suspect they've dropped way down on ds's list now.

FabTab · 20/12/2019 12:35

Well done mimble’s DS.
DS has got an interview at York less than 24 hours after submitting his UCAS form. He spoke to the admissions team (to move the date) and they close today for Xmas. That may just be Maths though.

MillicentMartha · 20/12/2019 14:44

Mimble snap! Well nearly. Letter from Cardiff offering ABB if firm instead of AAB. DS isn’t tempted but would love Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham or Southampton to do something similar. Not likely, unfortunately.

mimbleandlittlemy · 20/12/2019 15:31

Millicent - Cardiff obviously having a last hoorah before going off for Christmas Xmas Smile!

ZandathePanda · 20/12/2019 19:39

Gatekeeper she’ll love Newcastle. It’s a compact city to get round and very friendly. I would avoid Castle Leazes as it’s possibly the noisiest (oldest too). Park View where my Dd is, is lovely. She parties a bit but as it’s en-suite with thick fire doors it is pretty quiet. Her flat are a mix of homebodies and semiparty types. There’s a fantastic communal living dining kitchen with tv for her flat of 8. There’s one ‘quiet’ block furthest away from the university Dd thinks but it may have more mature/non alcohol/international students which may not be her thing.

KingscoteStaff · 20/12/2019 22:03

No golden tickets here, but has anyone else’s DC received a PERSONALISED prospectus from Bristol?

Most intriguing here, as it has his shortened name (think Sam, not Samuel) on the front, which was not used on the UCAS form! Maybe they’re listening in through the Alexa...

Hoghgyni · 20/12/2019 22:04

Spooky Kingscote.
