When dd applied for Bangor last year they offered her B B B but UIF. She was predicted AAA.
Then a letter followed a few weeks later saying that if she chose them as first choice they would also give her £3500 if she still got AAA.

TerfinUSA99 · 06/12/2019 18:11

Blimey! £3.5m would not have induced me to Bangor. (I went to school in Colwyn Bay and could not wait to get away!) Goes to show how very keen some unis are to have high achievers on their books, I'd take it as a big compliment 😀

MillicentMartha · 06/12/2019 19:40

Aw, my dad went to Bangor for a year after national service in the early 1950s in the days before grants. He ran out of money and got a job instead. It was his local uni. It’s so beautiful there, but perhaps better for a holiday than to live there.

MillicentMartha · 06/12/2019 19:42

Live there permanently I mean. Fine to be a student there!

I found Bangor to be very impressive in terms of how organised last year's open day was - a lot more slick than others. But the £3.5k wasn't enough to entice DD there. She went on the uni ranking sites and was trying to apply for ones ranked high for her subject. Bangor was thrown in as an extra 'quite local' uni in case she decided she had cold feet about living away and wanted to apply closer to home. She didn't and instead was accepted by the one that ranks 6th for her subject (and those above were Ox/Cam/Durham - she was interviewed but rejected for Cam and hated Durham's inflexibility on open day - and unis in London and Scotland and deemed too far away or too expensive or both.)

oneteen · 07/12/2019 12:18

Feb HT - DD starts her mocks on day one of return after Xmas (7th Jan), I am very tempted to book a holiday during Feb HT...one where there is plenty of chill time but also a chance for DD to revise in peace too...anyone else considering Feb HT break?

MillicentMartha · 07/12/2019 13:01

Not this year, but we went in October HT when DS1 was in Y13 and that was no problem. Canaries are nice in Feb.

One of mine did Eng lit at Bangor with A*AB and loved it. Never left. Now speaks Welsh and teaches. She has no regrets about turning down Durham.
It's a beautiful and safe place and she was and is very happy there.

DD had a reduced offer from York for another humanities subject about 6 weeks ago.

aibutohavethisusername · 08/12/2019 21:37

DD has an offer for York.

Lightuptheroom · 08/12/2019 22:00

Thanks, can I ask how long they took to answer and whether you think he has a chance with those predicted grades

aibutohavethisusername · 08/12/2019 22:14

DD’s offer is ABB for History. I think it took about 7-10 days at the most.

Hoghgyni · 08/12/2019 22:17

DD heard after 3 weeks. They dropped from AAA to ABB, but she is predicted 2x A A with an EPQ on top. It sounds hopeful for your DS.

errorofjudgement · 08/12/2019 22:20

Hi I’ve been following this thread but not posted, DD is on a gap year, applying to drama schools but also applying to a couple of unis for History.
The 2 she contacted have said she can email a second PS as her main one is so acting focussed. We’ve been really impressed that they will let her do this, though of course there’s no guarantee this will translate into an offer!

thesunwillout · 09/12/2019 07:49

Errorofjudgement, that is good. Everyone's circumstances are different aren't they, and for those taking a year out it's interesting the universitys have done this.
Which ones?

tumpymummy · 09/12/2019 08:02

@oneteen yes I have booked for us all to go away for the whole of Feb half term. Normally we all go away May half term, but obviously that is out this year. I'm very aware that DS will be away at Uni this time next year so our Feb holiday could be one of our last together as a family. I figured he cant spend the whole of next year studying and revising.

Whatagoodidea · 09/12/2019 08:32

As a parent of 2 DS, now in uni I think that planning half term trips are for Feb or May is not very sensible for year 13. You may find that school will be planning extra lessons at that time and there certainly will be work to do on top of revision

zzzzzzzx · 09/12/2019 16:31

Has anyone's children had offers for Psychology yet? DD applies to Birmingham, Nottingham, Bristol, Exeter and Southampton 11 days ago and has had acknowledgements from 4 of the 5 unis but no offers. We are getting very impatient! Grin

MillicentMartha · 09/12/2019 17:31

DS applied to 3 of those 4 and got offers between 10 days and 20 days after receiving acknowledgements. That was for maths, though, which may be come more quickly. 11 days is still early days.

@thesunwillout I have pm’d you

Hoghgyni · 09/12/2019 19:15

A friend received pyschology offers from Warwick, Durham and Exeter in October. The Exeter offer included a £1000 scholarship if she exceeded their lower offer for a firm choice.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 09/12/2019 19:53

DS had an offer from one of his favourites Lancaster last Tuesday and on Saturday he received a letter to say if he firms them it will become an unconditional offer. Thankfully he has decided to wait until all his offers are in and wants to go to some offer holder days before he makes a decision.

He is still waiting to hear from Warwick where he applied for 2 different courses.
