  • The applicant possibly qualifies for a contextual offer?
  • The applicant should not question the why and wherefore, just be duly thankful?
  • The applicant should immediately discount that university as either firm or insurance, since the course is obviously recruiting - not selecting, as they had been deceived into believing?

(The last being a concept I have only come across on MN, tbhGrin).

Hoghgyni · 16/12/2019 21:35

It means that you should be grateful that someone wants you, especially if there is a strong chance that you won't receive 5 offers. I agree with you Marching on the last point. I think DD & her two friends who also have reduced offers should all contact Durham and point out that there must be some mistake and ask for their ABB or AAA offers to be uplifted to the standard AAA* immediately!

oneteen · 16/12/2019 22:57

Well DD has had her "Golden Willy Wonker" style ticket from York today stating that she is "Exceptional"...pretty impressed that they know this already Wink...Nice quality embossed envelope ...just wish they would reduce the fees and stop wasting funds on marketing (It won't make any difference to how DD feels about the course/Uni).

@MillicentMartha - Not sure how the summer work will pan out it will certainly give DD an insight into how drugs are launched (depends on what she will be doing I suppose). Meanwhile, she is earning a crust as an ELF in Santa's Grotto ...one sweet little girl (9) asked FC for a boyfriend when he asked what she wanted for Christmas....not sure whether this work will carry any weight on her CV though!

ifonly4 · 17/12/2019 10:07

To those waiting on Warwick, my DD had a 19 week wait. Durham were even worse.

Regarding things going quiet at Xmas, DD literally had an offer come through last year around 20/21 Dec, late in the afternoon. Her next offer was around 11 Jan.

LIZS DD loves it at Edinburgh.

Justyou · 17/12/2019 10:12

It surely can’t mean you should be grateful, my dd got all 5 offers within a week and it’s a course where there are lots of applicants per place. I just didn’t understand the lower offer thing.

Lightuptheroom · 17/12/2019 10:23

We're still waiting to hear from York about History, do they close down this week or might he hear before Christmas?

MarchingFrogs · 17/12/2019 12:12

Justyou, I'm sorry, my intention was not to imply that the recipient was probably someone who is lucky to get offers at all (if that is how you read it? ). Although as Hoghgyni piunted out, if one were in a situation where a full clutch of offers was not a given - having included Oxbridge at all, given the very small number of places in total, would be included here, even for fairly stellar applicants, for example - having a more easily achieved than expected offer from one of your preferences should be accepted as a bonus, surely? And lower offers are given to well qualified candidates, whom the university / department would like to 'reel in'. But unfortunately, it would seem that the attitude of some (applicants, or possibly more their mummies?) to that approach is that of my third observation, This university obviously wants me to choose it, so of course I now would not touch it with a bargepoleShock.

Justyou · 17/12/2019 13:42

No I just really didn’t understand, it’s the one she desperately wanted anyway so accepted immediately.

tudorbuff · 17/12/2019 14:19

I think the lower offer thing is just a clever marketing tool, very effective in my household where 3 unis were favoured equally, but achieving the grades is a worry. So the one that has offered one grade lower if firm will get the vote here (unless mocks show higher than expected grades).

Hoghgyni · 17/12/2019 14:39

Having a low offer from Durham may ease the disappointment a little if/when DD doesn't get an Oxbridge offer next month. It means she can accept it on 15 Jan knowing that getting the grades should not be an issue and she is more likely to get the college she wants, than being allocated what's left after results day. Yes, my DD should be grateful.

bpisok · 17/12/2019 15:04

@Justyou - what was her offer if you don't mind me asking?

Justyou · 17/12/2019 15:08

Of course not, BBC

Hoghgyni · 17/12/2019 15:18

Is that for archeology? Nice. Definitely takes the pressure off.

bpisok · 17/12/2019 15:18

Wow. That's a fabulous offer! Well done, and York looks like a great Uni 😁
I bet she's very happy

Justyou · 17/12/2019 16:33

Yes thanks, archeology, she’s over the moon as fell in love with it on the visit and it’s all she’s ever wanted to do.

LIZS · 17/12/2019 16:39

Thank you @ifonly4 . Dilemma is that Edinburgh does not offer a guaranteed year abroad unlike some others. She has also had a taste of a career path which is stronger elsewhere. Would have been so much easier had they just deferred her 2019 place.

Hoghgyni · 17/12/2019 17:10

I used to love taking DD to DIG at York with the infamous Lloyds Bank Log. It must be one of the easiest locations to find interesting finds at.

Gatekeeper · 18/12/2019 19:56

dd has completely changed her plans for Lancaster and accepted Newcastle's reduced offer...BBC. She is chuffed to bits as am I

MillicentMartha · 18/12/2019 21:05

Wow, great offer from Newcastle! What subject Gatekeeper?

Lightuptheroom · 18/12/2019 21:59

Ds received the 'golden ticket' from York today as well, plus a personal Christmas card from Kent!!! Still nothing from the History department at York yet though

MillicentMartha · 18/12/2019 22:07

What is this ‘golden ticket’ then?

DS received a Christmas card from Birmingham maths dept today together with a maths puzzle about Santa’s reindeer. Cute.

LIZS · 18/12/2019 22:22

It is literally a piece of shiny gold paper with "you are exceptional" printed on! Dd now has two, one for each year she has received an offer from York. I assume all offered applicants get one.

Serin · 18/12/2019 22:56

DS got a golden ticket from York too.
And an offer 3 grades lower than advertised for his subject.
We thought the reduced offers that he has for Durham and York were because he has hobbies that might be of interest to them. He is a choristor and they are both known for their choirs.
Birmingham and Nottingham by contrast, just offered their standard grades.

MillicentMartha · 18/12/2019 22:56

Aw, that’s sweet!

Gatekeeper · 19/12/2019 07:12

@MillicentMartha it's psychology. I am relieved as Newcastle isn't far away (35 miles) and she will be able to come home on the odd weekend to recharge as needed- she has Asbergers and gets overwhelmed easily
