Cherryblossomandcornflakes she could do some shopping and buy a bag for life for 10p Grin

MrKlaw · 16/09/2019 16:19

Not sure if we’d send a bit extra over for expenses blips like £300(!) bus pass or books/societies, or sub him and he pays us back monthly

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 16:23

The societies at UEA seem to cost about £5 each (well, the ones DS is interested in anyway).

Just discovered that the other token male in DS's flat is 21 and 'self-confident'. DS only just turned 18! I hope he meets some more like minded males soon (it is important to him to have the company of other males, I think)

Trewser · 16/09/2019 16:58

I've had a big wobble this week. Dd says she's nervous and 'sort of' looking forward to it . She's got her timetable and it looks very full on, lectures and tutorials on Monday from 9-5.30!

Serin · 16/09/2019 17:08

piggy our DS is in a flat with 7 girls. He has joined the rugby team even though he cant play for 6 months due to a fractured ulna and radius. Is your DS likely to meet other males on his course?

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2019 17:26

I certainly hope so serin. The flats are arranged around courtyards so he may well pal up with folk from neighbouring flats, perhaps. I did think they would try harder with this kind of thing these days.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 17:27

@Piggywaspushed any chance that the 21 year old might take on a brotherly role? Is he a football fan too? I think some common interests can overcome most differences. What's your DS's view of him so far? How is he finding the girls?

OP posts:
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 17:29

What is the rationale for putting one or two guys in flats where they are so very outnumbered? @Serin is it your DS who's sharing with all the student nurses?

OP posts:
Trewser · 16/09/2019 17:38

Dd is in a flat with 7 blokes and two other girls. She's not particularly looking forward to it.

Trewser · 16/09/2019 17:40

I think she's worried that the boys will be useless and the girls will end up doing all the cleaning! It's certainly not like that at home as dh is very tidy - think she's basing it on her boy mates who are mostly a bit crap at cooking and cleaning.

NotNowMrTumnus · 16/09/2019 17:41

DD has just announced that her moving in day is Monday 23 September not Sunday 22. Why would a university even think that this is a good idea?

Serin · 16/09/2019 17:41

NewModelArmy It is him with the nurses! To be fair, he did expect that if he did nursing he would be in the minority. I hope your DS gets included Piggy. Would he be interested in OTC? they recruit at freshers.

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2019 17:46

Oh goodness, definitely not serin! I'm afraid I am a pacifist Grin but also he is not into that kind of thing at all; bit too physical for him. I think his uni might actually be a bit female heavy , too.

The word he used for the 21 year old was 'self confident', for which I read a bit cocky.

I think he would like it if he just found someone to talk to bore about football newmodel!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 17:47

I guess it doesn't follow that equal numbers of girls and guys are going to apply for the same type of accommodation does it?

They should try to even out the numbers a little better - or even possibly offer some single sex shares.

Hopefully there will be someone around to offer a hand when your DS moves in @MrKlaw.

notnow : my DS's was officially a Friday , also bonkers. But we went yesterday (Sunday).

Trewser · 16/09/2019 17:51

I think dds campus is mainly engineering and very male heavy.

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2019 17:58

There were definitely plenty of blokes visible at DS's halls newmodel, just not in his particular flat.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 18:00

Oh that goes some way to explain your DD's situation, @Trewser. Doesn't make it right though...

Still, I wouldn't envy those who work in the accommodation office of any university.

OP posts:
BatshitBertha · 16/09/2019 18:03

DS is in a flat with 5 girls and 1 other boy, he wasn't that thrilled about the uneven split - he's studying engineering so his course is very make heavy, I think it may be a good balance overall.

drsausage · 16/09/2019 18:04

DD has just announced that her moving in day is Monday 23 September not Sunday 22. Why would a university even think that this is a good idea?

I don't know, but it's the same at DD's university. And parents are expected to stay for a variety of events on Tuesday.

DH did go, but he's leaving before tomorrow afternoon's events. I am missing it all as I have younger children at school and a lot of work to do.

Witchend · 16/09/2019 18:13

I shared a flat with 3 boys for a year. Tbf it was 2nd year so I had some choice.
It was fine.
They did their washing up and cooking share. They also removed spiders for me Grin of which there seemed to be a stupid number of large ones.
Occasionally they came to me with a question about cooking assuming I knew, but tbf to them I knew a lot more than them. I used to bake a cake a week and they did other things for me.
I would have found it a bit horrifying if I'd arrived in the first year to that though.

minesawine · 16/09/2019 18:21

DS passed his driving test today. Yay. I am so proud of him. 🚙🚘🚗 he can now share the driving on Friday whilst I sob quietly beside him

VioletCharlotte · 16/09/2019 18:22

DS went yesterday. He's in a university managed house with 5 other students (4 girls and 1 other boy) The house is nice and well equipped and not too far from the uni. I did well up when I left him, but managed to hold back the tears until I got in the car, then I cried all the way home. I've spoken to him today and he seems fine. He went out last night with two of his house mates and is planning to go out again tonight.

Piggy I'm sure your DS will make friends with people on his course and though clubs. Thinking back to when I went, I didn't really have much in common at all with my flat mates, but I soon found friends.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 18:24

Well done to your DS @minesawine!
