Gin and Zanda - mine too. She's also taking a crepe pan - something she can confidently make well and thought it might be a nice thing to do for flatmates!

MrKlaw · 16/09/2019 11:09

no parking slot for the postgrad building in Bath as there is no parking! They said you can drop stuff off and then go find a parking space. They probably don't have tons of students helping with unpacking either so could be 'fun'..

JennyWreny · 16/09/2019 11:11

MrKlaw is your DS on some kind of waiting list to get campus accommodation instead? If so, fingers crossed for you.

MrKlaw · 16/09/2019 11:18

@JennyWreny DS has been allocated a room in a postgrad building in the town. He'll probably apply on a waiting list to see if campus spots come up, but at least he isn't sharing so not the end of the world.

But it has been a bit last minute so no parking slot, probably no assistance to quickly unload. Also no parking particularly close so if I dump everything on the street and leave DS/DW to it, they'll probably be all done by the time I find somewhere, park, and get back.

We're aiming to get down there earlier for lunch and so DS can register etc at the student building in town. Maybe we can just get a cab or something to ferry the stuff up and drop it off?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 11:20

That's quite a lot of money spent @ifonly4 but I guess term gets cheaper once the 'one-off' purchases are out of the way. £40 per text book seems a lot. Are the students advised which are the definitive ones to purchase?

I know when I was a student, many many moons ago, there was always a rush to borrow library books (set reading for seminars) as there were so few copies available. Presumably this is less of an issue now, with many available as online resources?

MrKlaw, we did have helpers. But DH stopped at double yellow line, quickly unloaded and disappeared. Because of this reason I was keen for younger dc to tag along so someone could stay with the luguage outside while dc and I started carrying stuff in.
No idea where DH went, in the end he did park, popped in too see dc's room and then we all left.

EleanorReally · 16/09/2019 13:03

dd thought they would share the washing up liquid however i did notice about 4 frying pans in the halls! Grin

EleanorReally · 16/09/2019 13:04

actually looking at dd's shared kitchen, it seems that no one knows how to use washing up liquid Wink

VanCleefArpels · 16/09/2019 13:37

On text books, DS only bought one book in his entire degree course. There are plenty copies of books in Libraries and/or online resources. They should all wait and see if there is any need to buy books

Mustbetimeforachange · 16/09/2019 13:47

Yes, DD had 2 - one bought before she went, one for a specific module, which she bought second hand on Amazon (science subject). I think she borrowed one or two from the library. DS1 has not had to buy any (arts subject). Most things are available on line these days (& more up to date), and libraries are usually well stocked.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 16/09/2019 14:01

Discussing on radio 2 about accommodation etc.

Serin · 16/09/2019 14:34

DS2 has asked for help with his personal statement for next year! Can't believe we have to do it all again next year. They are just one year apart in age.

Serin · 16/09/2019 14:35

I'm off work today so took the dog for a very long walk to cheer him up as he does seem to be missing DS1.

CointreauVersial · 16/09/2019 14:39

Funny how roasting-hot rooms seems to be a feature! Luckily, DD1 is a cool cucumber so she won't mind.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 16/09/2019 14:47

We're currently playing piggy in the middle between Student Finance England and Uni. Uni needs the letter stating her disability requirements from SFE but they haven't done it yet (although she's had the initial OK and her needs assessment) because they lost her original paperwork at the end of August (which we re-sent that day, but it promptly went to the back of the queue again). Uni can't wont allocate her support without it.

SFE have 'promised' to 'look' at her application in the 'next 24 hours'.

Considering we submitted the DSA application in June, it's a bit shit. We were hoping for her to go with everything in place, but right now we have diddly squat.

New DD has come back and said some are actually £50. Told her check what's available in library, or secondhand on Amazon/ebay.

As long as she can balance out her money over the next few years, I don't mind how much she spent last week as she struggled with sixth form boarding initially, and I'd rather she was out there getting to know others.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 15:11

Hi @ifonly4 it wasn't meant as a criticism of your DD, just astonishment/shock. There again I would expect the first few weeks to be the most expensive for lots of reasons! DS won't have that amount of money to spend in one week though - if he does he will be living on fresh air for the rest of the month!

Ds bought 2 textbooks in his 3 years. One was £40 new, other second hand £20 which he is hoping will resell via the SU. All others were available in library or as online articles.

Interesting the costs of joining socs @ifonly4 as the online leaflet dd saw suggested they were £5/10 each.

justasking111 · 16/09/2019 15:31

Roasting hot room for DS. He insisted he had a set of towels gifted from DIL discovered it was one big towel so went to Wilkos and bought two more. Also discovered he did not have the pin number for his Santander account, so have provided that. Last night his flat mates all chipped in for a delivery of food. He sounds happy, finds it noisy ring road below his room he is used to silence at night. His voice sounds a bit hoarse maybe the heat.

I think a fan is a good idea for them, will suggest he buys one.

ifonly4 · 16/09/2019 15:32

New I didn't take it like that at allSmile

LIZS DD wants to join music societies, so maybe they're a different rate. I guess it could be different depending on costs of running and things that might be supplied

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 15:35

I imagine there will be a couple of books that are compulsory purchases.

The cost of the societiss probably varies considerably from one uni to another. Would imagine the Oxbridge and more traditional RG ones are likely to be more expensive than others.

Is your DD at Edinburgh @ifonly4 (sorry if I've misrembered)?

DD went on Saturday. She’s not very far away and after moving her in on Saturday we saw her again on Sunday and all is well.

She’s said today that she really needs a backpack....I wonder if anyone can recommend one, perhaps I should start a new thread? Wink
