Previous thread. Possibly a little precipitous but for some of our DC their university start date is only just over a fortnight away. Yikes!

Honestly - the set is really nice. Soft white with pale green spots. I'll probably split it so she doesn't risk it all, and I'll need to buy (or steal from my mother) a couple of pasta bowls, for what'll probably be 90% of her meals.

Piggywaspushed · 01/09/2019 20:37

I shall visit B and M too. It's next to our Dunelm.

Benjispruce · 01/09/2019 21:34

Ah phanny? I can relate. DD wants to do everything herself but is a procrastinator and I’m not so we clash. I went out and got stuff today, practical stuff because I’m back to work next week and had time. She wasn’t impressed as she wanted to choose her own clothes horse Hmm. I think they glut between needing us and wanton to assert their independence and it doesn’t always coincide with our own ideas. I’m trying to relax my need to organise ahead of time but it’s not easy. Luckily DD2 is like me so I’m hoping that if she chooses uni, it will be easier.

Benjispruce · 01/09/2019 21:35

Flit not glut

Benjispruce · 01/09/2019 21:36

Wanton ??? Grin

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/09/2019 21:43

Today's purchase has been a sandwich toaster as DD likes the idea of a toastie for a quick lunch, esp if there is competition for using the hob from time to time. At a push, they are great for making mini omelettes too.

I broke my leg while staying at Swansea Uni. (I didn't go there, but we had a field trip there).

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/09/2019 21:47

I'd suggested a george foreman thing so that she could make flat toasted sandwiches, cook chicken breasts etc but she complained that the didn't seal the beans in!

JennyWreny · 01/09/2019 22:33

Bedclothes and more towels washed today. I think that's all of the washing done now - phew!

Spent a long time this evening listing all of DDs A level textbooks and revision guides on eBay. Hopefully recoup some of the £££ that we spent on them! Will be good to get rid of them even if they don't make much money!

AtiaoftheJulii · 01/09/2019 22:47

Dd1 has a flower name which is a fairly common crockery etc pattern. When we were looking for stuff for her, Dunelm had absolutely EVERYTHING with her flower on, and I was desperately trying to get her to let me buy all her kitchen and bedroom stuff with the same pattern on, on the grounds that she'd always know what was hers. But really because I found the idea hilarious - can you imagine the other flatmates' faces as they saw it all! GrinGrinGrin

Mustbetimeforachange · 01/09/2019 22:58

Haha, we have some of those mugs Atiao. Much too nice for a student Grin

Witchend · 01/09/2019 23:14

Dd has for the last few years wanted everything in her favourite colour. She's decided she doesn't want to go to uni with lots in that colour as she doesn't want it to be what she's known for.
However we did find a cutlery set with the handles in that colour that she loves.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/09/2019 07:41

I'm impressed that you all still have crockery from your own university days. I have nothing except for my towels which look as if they'll go on forever.

Not even sure where our closest Home Bargains/B&M shops are.

DS says some of his London universities bound friends are starting this week. Think he may well go to visit some of them.

He's not awake yet to ask about which tickets to buy for Freshers' Week events - hmmm.

MrKlaw · 02/09/2019 08:39

DS has been having a few evenings out with friends as they're either visiting from further away, or some of them starting to head off - one was starting in Aberdeen last week so they went out in London. He's only just turned 18 so not a drinker but is having a couple of drinks. I just hope it takes it easy at Uni (but I know I didn't so..)

Only two weekends for us to have a meal out together but difficult to fit around his plans - partly because he doesn't tell us until the day..

MrKlaw · 02/09/2019 08:39

Might try a test packing of the car this weekend just to see if everything fits and whether DW has to get the train down or if she'll fit in the car.

MrKlaw · 02/09/2019 09:07

Will this thread eventually turn into a 'students of 2019' one so we can still have a chat during their course? Looks like there is one on this forum for a previous year. I like the sound of that

Mustbetimeforachange · 02/09/2019 09:21

When DD started she took a huge amount of stuff - I think I've mentioned before that it was hot so she insisted on taking all her summer clothes. She also had a king size duvet as that was what we had spare with covers etc. She had to sit in the duvet & was absolutely crammed in! DS1 wasn't quite so bad as we had a bigger car by then & he doesn't have so many clothes. Hopefully DS2 will be similar...
I'm way behind on making lists but have bought a few bits.

Ginfordinner · 02/09/2019 10:39

MrKlaw I'm on that chat as DD took her A levels last year. They are a lovely bunch and as supportive as everyone is this thread.

icanbewhatiwant · 02/09/2019 11:16

I'm going to put the duvet and pillows in a vacuum bag, they reduce the size by quite a lot. My car is plenty big enough, but I thought it will be easier to carry about and upstairs if vacuumed down small. Perhaps this would help those of you with small cars? You can put clothes in them too.

ZandathePanda · 02/09/2019 11:25

Aha I have a cunning plan. Previous posters have put me in mind of getting left-handed kitchen scissors and can openers for left-handed Dd. Less likely to be used!!?
Apparently serrated knifes (even on normal cutlery) have the cutting edge for right handers. Just found this out. This is maybe why she is hopeless at cutting bread!

BringOnTheScience · 02/09/2019 11:32

Resurfacing here. Results in July (IB) weren't as hoped so it's been a long summer while Unis made us wait until A level results day for a decision!

Now we're shopping for MMU. DC1 is v happy with location of the flat - v handy for gigs at the Deaf Institute. We're off to B&M and Dunelm shortly.

blametheparents · 02/09/2019 11:49

@bringonthescience - good to see you again! Pleased to hear your DC has a uni and course that they’re happy with. Exciting times after a very long summer!

BringOnTheScience · 02/09/2019 12:00

Hello Blame! It has been a VERY long summer hasn't it?! DC1 has been working in a supermarket to earn some gig ticket money. Going back to critical thinking is going to be tough! Hope that your DS is raring to go.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/09/2019 12:09

It would be fab to continue the conversation as a Students of 2019 thread @MrKlaw. I reckon we may still have another 'getting ready for university' one ahead of us first though (as we're already up to 771 posts on this one).

Glad to hear that everything has worked out for your DC1 @BringOnTheScience. Are they excited?

I can see that too much research about accommodation etc... can potentially be counter-productive, causing additional worry. Perhaps there is something to be said for not finding out too much about everything in advance, after all?

I just didn't unpack the duvet and pillows until we got there as they were already packed and rolled tight by IKEA.

bengalcat · 02/09/2019 12:30

We had an IKEA trip over the weekend - I’ve not been there for @25 years I think - kid loved it
