New thread started. Here's the previous one

I think we might leave it until DS has finished his exams before considering and applying for UEA accommodation.

Newmodel as long as the accommodation he would prefer is not snapped up in the meantime, that is the sensible thing to do.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/04/2019 13:54

£3.5k was incredibly tempting. But at the time she had her hope's set Cambridge which wasn't to be. Her choices were based on the ranking for her course online and Bangor was so much further down the list that, although a good course and relatively local as well as a lower offer grade, she still wanted to go to the higher ranked universities.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 24/04/2019 14:08

justasking111, don't think UEA operates a first come first served policy, thankfully.

Thanks for the UEA update, DS1 is deliberating between the Zigguratts and ensuite campus. A straightforward choice between beer or bog 😆

Shimy · 24/04/2019 17:22

I’ll never forget Zigguratts! 😫

GoldenRuby · 24/04/2019 17:36

My DS wants Village Plus I think - Ziggs were too full on, and doesn't like the combi ovens in the campus en-suite kitchens 😃, not that I can see him living off anything other than pasta and noodles!

Shimy · 24/04/2019 17:47

I thought the village accommodation was lovely. DS thought Ziggs or the campus en-suite were more to his taste. He doesn’t like pasta or noodles and couldn’t see the problem with the combi oven.

So far a productive evening. DD has completed her applications for accommodation and student finance and can now concentrate on revision. Exams start 2 weeks today 😬

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 25/04/2019 08:46

juicy0 well done to your DD. I don't actually think DS's first exam is until the 23rd May. He has his school leaving do tomorrow evening. He is worried that he's going to get ribbed for not drinking alcohol...

OP posts:
TapasForTwo · 25/04/2019 08:48

Are the written exams earlier this year?
DD didn't start hers until after May half term last year.

juicy0 · 25/04/2019 09:08

DD's exams start before she is even on study leave which seems ridiculous really. She's got a morning of lessons and a geog a level in the afternoon Shock

Ragwort · 25/04/2019 09:15

Anybody else’s DC doing the absolute minimum revision and just not taking it seriously? I alternate between getting quite exasperated and then just trying to be calm, not worry and just remind myself that it’s not my future. DS is not someone who will coast through his exams, his offer from NTU, where he really wants going to go, is a big challenge for him yet he just carries on enjoying his Easter break, totally unstressed, ‘chilling out’ all the time ... always amuses me when other parents say how stressed their child is over exams, don’t think my DS has ever been stressed in his life, unless his football team is going down a league Grin.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 25/04/2019 09:27

Ragwort DS isn't stressed but he is working really hard, making up for 'chilling' misdeamours during his GCSEs (and all through secondary school until he hit Year 12!!!). It remains to be seen whether the hard work pays off. Sometimes being laid-back can be more productive, so don't despair - your DS may surprise you.

OP posts:
slalomsuki · 25/04/2019 09:47

I'll join in if you don't mind. DS1 has confirmed his first and second choices and has done student finance. He is working very hard at the moment- too hard in my opinion as he's is going to bed later each night having worked since he gets home every night. First exam is just before study leave starts which is a pain but they seem well spaced out.
DS2 is doing GCSEs at the same time with first exam today with German oral and art next week followed by a history paper the week after. He too wont have started study leave but I'm going to keep him off before history exam

Ragwort · 25/04/2019 09:58

New I just hope you are right, he’s ‘chilled’ throughout his whole school career though, every singe parents evening and report has been ‘needs to focus more, capable of much better work etc etc’ he just managed to scrape through his GCSEs ... I have just been into his room to gently suggest it might be time to get up, trying hard not to lose my cool.

VanCleefArpels · 25/04/2019 10:32

DD’s mocks start today (I know, weird timing)- she’s worked herself to a frazzle over the Easter break, And no study leave at her school (mostly boarding) so it’s going to be a bit relentless. However a massive delivery of prom dresses to try might brighten the day!

Shimy · 25/04/2019 11:04

Ragwort - Revision started here this easter holiday for the first time since A'levels began. Like yours, coasted through GCSEs and admitted not revising anything until December before final exams.

I just laid off in the end. We'll see what happens come August, hopefully everyone will be here for some hand holding.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 25/04/2019 11:08

Dd works like a Trojan, always. She's a school work and revision machine. Our problem is making her take time out to do other things and to make sure the inevitable blowup doesn't happen when the exams loom and she gets stressed.

juicy0 · 25/04/2019 11:42

drmadelinemaxwell my DD is the same! Trying to help by reminding her that she's not a machine and has to make time for rest if she's going to remain fit and well.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 25/04/2019 11:58

Tricky isn't it.
Nagging to get someone to revise is seen as in their best interest.
Nagging to slow down and pace themselves didn't go down well and if she is too worked up then u get accused of not wanting her to do her best.

She had gcses in Jan one year. Christmas was ruined. Not helped by the pep talk they had had at school (prob aimed at the non revisers) that was all about done athlete that was so determined to do well that they trained even on Christmas day.
As a result she felt she couldn't even take that day off revising

Rosieposy4 · 25/04/2019 12:38

Mine is working ok but definitely could be doing more hours, he is convinced he is doing more than average ( amongst his mates) so it’s fine 🧐
Also still needs to apply for student finance- I may have mentioned this to him several times.....

justasking111 · 25/04/2019 12:48

The girls seem to work harder than the boys DS does around 5 hours a day, he works 5pm till 10pm. Then rises late. At this stage I said to him there will be no-one at uni. to nag you so you need to be self motivated.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 25/04/2019 14:21

Student finance application going in as soon as my p60 is sent from work. I'd lost the one I need and had to request another one.

ifonly4 · 25/04/2019 15:11

DD worked hard the first two weeks of the hols, but the last week went off the boil. First written exam 8 May. Luckily she's done the performance and composition part of her Music A level, so only has one paper for that subject.

We've taken a big gamble and booked a campervan to get DD 350/400 miles to her chosen unis, which luckily start the same weekend. If it falls flat, we'll have a long weekend away somewhere. Works out less than flying/train and accommodation, (train travel which has gone up 50%+ in the last month, for those of you that might be considering that option) and we can easily take 3 suitcases, all bedding, current folders which are in good condition, music instruments and 101 other things!! Am I brave enough to do my share of the drivingConfused?
