Wow that last thread filled up quickly. Well done to your DS, Piggy!

Bottom drawer shopping sounds an excellent idea! I'm keen to get cracking on it if only to spread the cost!

Hi ComeonGordon I'm new to this thread too but posting as my DS has applied for similar courses. We're Scottish and he has applied for various descriptions of Politics and International relations at Aberdeen, Dundee, Stirling and Strathclyde. He's had a conditional offer from Aberdeen with achievable conditions and hasn';t heard from the rest. He doesn't really have what Strathclyde are looking for but put it asan option as an outside punt. He didn't do well in his Highers for various reasons and we are currently looking at a diagnosis of Dyspraxia.

DS1 had Glasgow as one of his options last year (Computing/Software engineering etc though) and got a reply very quickly with an unconditional. They seem to be pretty quick going by last years thread on Scotnet. There is a uni thread running on there to which is more about Scottish Unis :)

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2019 17:19

Yes OP, that's them all!

really tricky decisions logistically as they are all very clustered, offers wise, and the decision has to be made as to whether he accepts the UiFs... sigh. If he doesn't , they basically all become the same offer, so he leaves himself with no sense of firm/insurance!

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2019 17:20

I don't know why UiFs don't show on track. It's , I guess, a decision made by the uni independent of UCAS?

waterplease · 07/01/2019 17:33

@titchy I got the first acknowledgment (uni of Kent) on the 2nd I think it was then Canterbury a day or so after and Brighton notified me on Friday or Saturday? It was all very random! The acknowledgments came in quickly which was good and all gave me logins to their student area to keep track of my applications.

waterplease · 07/01/2019 17:35

@ifonly4 thanks, that's good to know! One of mine is a higher ranked one (one of the top 10 law schools in the U.K.) so I'm anticipating that may take longer to decide, but then again, they acknowledged first!

ComeOnGordon · 07/01/2019 18:12

Thanks for that info @WaxOnFeckOff. She said she’s had acknowledgment emails from all 3 courses already so we’ll happily wait. I doubt she’d get any unconditionals as she only has her final exams in May and I’m sure they’d want to see the results of them.
Will have a look at the Scottish Uni thread Smile

Decorhate · 07/01/2019 18:21

Laniakea That’s really frustrating especially when Southampton was her first choice I think? Have you or your dd had a look on the Student Room to see if anyone else applying to those courses has heard back?

I would definitely try to contact the admissions tutor or administrator for the department rather than the admissions office. We had a query regarding a course at a different uni & admissions were exasperatingly obtuse whereas the department was very helpful.

I found the admissions tutor for the course ds has applied to at Southampton very helpful & open about grade requirements etc on the open day.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/01/2019 18:24

Strikes me that these UIF offers benefit the universities more than the students and potentially put a spanner in the works.

Difficult decision-making ahead for your DS, PIggy. Does he have a leaning towards some courses more than others?

Not sure which way DS will go, decisions-wise. Suspect that Exeter might be out of the running already.

ComeOn it's this one www.mumsnet.com/Talk/scotsnet/3332384-S5-S6-support-thread?pg=3

It was last year we had one for Uni applications (my DS1 is only a year older than DS2 so we are doing this 2 years in a row) but we've been using this one for the same purpose but it's been a bit quiet lately.

My DS1 is currently at Strathclyde - becasue of the exam structure here he was sitting with 4 unconditionals last year as he'd already met the requirements.

GoldenRuby · 07/01/2019 18:41

@Piggywaspushed I am pretty sure my DS's UiF offer from NTU did show on Track, but from memory it starts with the standard offer and then there is small print or a further details section that talked about UiF. (He is flattered but won't go for it. He is weighing up between Birmingham and UEA for his Firm).

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2019 19:02

I am not sure about Lincoln (would veha to check) but Portsmouth's definitely came in a separate email.

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2019 19:02

have!

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2019 19:03

Sorry, just realised you mentioned NTU : not with it!

What subject was that, golden ?

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2019 19:05

Not discussing it with DS yet, as I also have to raise the notion of the scholarship exam for Aber.

Will leave him to sit on it for as long as I can tolerate. Certainly, course wise, Aber is the best fit for him but I sense he may plump for NTU. I feel we need to visit Lincoln on an offer day as he might like it, and maybe Aber.

Danglingmod · 07/01/2019 21:33

Is the lower league but going places football team still a criterion, Piggy? If so, Lincoln is definitely his place!

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2019 21:38

Haha! Well remembered! This has been mentioned a couple of times. In Nottingham, Notts County might be on their way out of the league which will make their matches cheaper, too! The only reason he considered Huddersfield at one point was football! Very shallow...

Danglingmod · 07/01/2019 21:49

Yeah, if Lincoln get promoted it might be too pricey unless there's a good student deal to be had.

At least he has something he's passionate about!

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2019 21:51

Oh, passionate might be pushing it. Both DSs are football stat nerds.
I made him write in his PS that he had a partcicular interest in the politics of football, in particular lower league Spanish football. It's sad but true!

BringOnTheScience · 07/01/2019 22:17

There are worse reasons for choosing a uni. My choice was very heavily influenced by the quality of the local gliding club. Serously! Grin

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2019 22:22

Very daring!

GoldenRuby · 07/01/2019 22:26

@Piggywaspushed the NTU offer is for Coaching and Sports Coaching.

GoldenRuby · 08/01/2019 07:59

Sorry I meant Coaching & Sport Science!

choirmumoftwo · 08/01/2019 09:17

DS did his EPQ on funding in grass roots football!

GoldenRuby · 08/01/2019 09:58

@choirmumoftwo that sounds excellent!
