Wow that last thread filled up quickly. Well done to your DS, Piggy!

DS's school doesn't do EPQ, which is a shame.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/01/2019 11:18

DS had to do an EPQ project in the summer of Year 12 BUT it wasn't externally examined - the school made them do it just for the challenge (his school is very like that!).

DS is a football fan too but for some strange reason known only to himself decided not to apply to the university local to his team? He too is very nerdy about the beautiful game.

thanks Decorhate, it is her favourite which makes it harder. One course is lower than her predicted grades, one is the same & she's got lots of relevant extras - she's gone from fairly sure she'd get an interview/offer for at least one to not at all confident now.

She's agreed to email the department admissions team if she hasn't heard anything by the end of today.

Laniakea · 08/01/2019 12:11

I think the EPQ is brilliant - dd's school run in in year 10* and then again in year 12. I think y10 is too soon - her friends who did it then got much lower grades than the bunch that did it in y12.

(at her school the GCSE enrichment is BTEC (drama, dance, business etc) or further maths or EPQ)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 - I haven't got a clue if she'll firm Birmingham. Edinburgh will be her insurance, her other offer is St Andrews which is a brilliant course for sustainability (and ideal career), she thinks she'd be happy there, but it's 400 miles from home. Birmingham is for LANS so she can continue studying her three A level subjects she loves, as well as modules for sustainability and politics she's interested in, is a shorter course and has other incentives. Waiting on Durham and Warwick which was equally good for different reasons.

I think some of us will be posting threads asking for opinions on either/or to pass to our DCs.

Laniakea - do you know if Southampton tend to leave decisions until after 15 January deadline. As mentioned previously it might be worth trawling through TSR for Southampton 2019 applicants and offer holders to see if anyone has had an early offer/rejection.

Laniakea · 08/01/2019 15:45

It seems to be a mixture - TSR Southampton board is very quiet but it seems to be a complete mix of applicants waiting weeks (some applied before Oxbridge deadline & haven’t heard) & others who’ve had very quick responses. I know of at least one person who has been invited for interview for dd’s course(s).

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/01/2019 16:13

Just to flag up that DN who only put in her application a week before Christmas has now heard from all five of hers including Southampton (which she heard from today). She wants to study English.

blametheparents · 08/01/2019 17:26

DS applied on 12 December and has only heard from one university so far.
Hoping to hear from some others very soon. It’s making me nervous!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/01/2019 17:45

Wondering whether those applying for 'humanities' rather than STEM subjects are hearing more quickly?

Wondering whether those applying for 'humanities' rather than STEM subjects are hearing more quickly?

We've found the opposite but then it's under the Scottish system where a lot of DC already have the qualifications for entry prior to applying. DS1 applied for STEM subjects last year and Glasgow in particular just look to see if you have the course requirements already and make an unconditional offer straight away. DS2 is applying for Politics type subjects and has only heard from 1 Uni so far, However, he doesn't already have the course requirements so maybe that's the difference?

You'd have thought that the STEM is really more about the results whereas for other subjects the PS might be more important and therefore take longer for admissions to read and decide?

blametheparents · 08/01/2019 18:08

DS has applied for Economics.
His only offer so far is from Exeter and that came through so quickly that it could only have been based on a graded formula. There’s no way anybody read the PS.
Hoping that the other universities are taking a while because they’re reading his PS.
His predictions exceed the course requirements, and his GCSE results are good so I’m hoping there’s not a problem! Fingers crossed!

waterplease · 09/01/2019 10:11

I got my first offer! Conditional (as long as I get my 60 credits in this HE course) from Canterbury! Things are looking good!😎

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/01/2019 10:18

Well done waterplease!

Oh well done waterplease . How favourite was this choice .

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/01/2019 10:21

DS's fifth and final offer has just come in for B'ham - not the UIF he'd hoped for but maybe that will come later (or maybe not). And it's currently the same offer as Durham??? I think he will wait until he finds out how he's done provisionally in geography and history course work before deciding on his firm one - Durham if he gets As and York if he does less well (with UEA as his back-up one).

Laniakea · 09/01/2019 10:29

well done waterplease & NewModel's ds Grin

My niece has an interview for her absolute top choice today, she's post results so it will be an unconditional if she gets an offer ... I'm busily crossing everything for her. It's a long way from home so she & my brother flew down yesterday. She's also applied to Southampton & hasn't heard anything!

ifonly4 · 09/01/2019 10:32

NewModelArmyMayhem18 - congratulations to your DS. Such a great place to be, I'm sure it's confusing but he has five offers and time to think. Also great news for your DN also.

Waterplease congrats on the offer, which uni?

waterplease · 09/01/2019 10:54

Thanks everyone! It's not my first choice (uni of Kent is) but it's a close second! It's Canterbury Christ Church uni :)

waterplease · 09/01/2019 10:55

@Laniakea Wow! Good luck for your niece! I'm sure she'll kill it🤞🏻🌟

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/01/2019 11:01

Fingers crossed for your DN, Laniakea.

Newmodel we also have an offer from Birmingham. AAB. I just wondered why you think a UIF offer may come in later. I hadn't heard that was a possibility. Thanks

All 5 offers in now all at AAB which gives DS no back up plan. I did warn him!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/01/2019 12:57

Hi glitterbiscuits, congratulations to your DS too!

DS's school flagged up B'ham as one of the universities that regularly give out UIF offers. DS got one from York (about a week or so after the initial one) that's why I said it.

Oh dear it's going to be difficult making a decision for five offers that are the same. DS's now range from AAA to the UIF one. Does your DS have a preferred choice one?

OP posts:
Laniakea · 09/01/2019 12:59

I think they can come later glitter. No experience of Birmingham but Cardiff gave dd an initial AAB on track then a follow up email (same day) saying ABB with her EPQ & a couple of weeks later she got a letter saying BBB if she firms.

glitterbiscuits · 09/01/2019 13:16

This is my first DC off to Uni.
I was crossing fingers for an unconditional somewhere in the mix as DS is finding the jump in A level biology quite tricky. He got almost all A stars/8/9 in GCSE but he had a rough start to lower 6th due to illness and hasn't climbed back up to where everyone thought he'd be.
He was on the Oxbridge list but it all sort of collapsed.

And I'd like the certainty of knowing now where he's going as I'm a bit of a control freak.

I'm buying hair dye later, it's all too much for me!Wink

waterplease · 09/01/2019 13:45

@glitterbiscuits ah I'm sure it'll all pan out- don't go ruining your hair prematurelyWinkGrin
