old thread

A chat/support thread for parents of undergrads who have entered the quite frankly slightly odd world of Oxbridge. Grin

Apparently we are parents to undergrads now Confused

Still no operation. Still waiting on the ward. No food for 24 hours so is obsessing about that. They operate until 10pm which means it might still happen. (Now 6pm).

Thank goodness he was there. An injury like that at home would require a very long journey in an ambulance and maybe a flight. At least in Oxbridge land they have expertise nearby.

He is enjoying chatting to the Spanish nurses in Spanish to piss off his slightly racist ward buddies.

PandaG · 01/12/2018 18:45

Oh no Tinlegs. Hope he does get the op tonight.
DS is shattered too...he could do with an early night but is off to the pub with his mates, his best mate is at Oxford, and he can't wait any longer to see him having been apart for 9 weeks. His other closest school friends are at Cambridge, in fact one is only 2 floors above him in college, so he said goodbye this morning and is going out for a pint with him tonight!
Is lovely to have him home, but we will all have to readjust.

Just want to say how great the porters are at St Anne's!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2018 19:51

Bummer Tinlegs. I hope it happens soon.

Thanks everyone. He has gone off at about 7pm for the operation. He has enjoyed his homophobic, Brexit voting, xenophobic room mates (he is a gay, lefty Scot) and has kept us entertained with their rather awful conversations.

Hopefully all will be fine.

Any Doctors on here - would welcome a bit of advice on recovery etc. He is likely to downplay everything.

Sunndowne · 01/12/2018 20:01

Not a doc but really hope your DS recovers soon. Well done him being bright and breezy with challenging ward roomies. Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2018 20:07

How long will the op take?

OP posts:
Tinlegs · 01/12/2018 21:21

Now at about 2 hours and not back but some of that will be getting to / from theatre I assume. It is probably a big hospital, given the size of the city.

Hard to tell really but quite stressed so thanks for kind thoughts.

Sunndowne · 01/12/2018 21:54

Thinking of you tinlegs

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2018 22:12

He will probably have spent or be spending some time in recovery.

OP posts:
Tinlegs · 02/12/2018 10:08

All went well. Being released today under the supervision of his College granny.

I just want him home now and have been trying to sort logistics but, as ever, he will "let me know".

OhTheRoses · 02/12/2018 10:20

Will be off within the hour:)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/12/2018 12:34

That's good news Tinlegs. He probably doesn't know whether he's coming or going himself.

Good news tinlegs - be home in no time xxx lovely having DS home - he played guitar & sang while I decorated the tree - really missed the constant backing music in our house!!!

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2018 17:57

DH mailed this warning to DD, passing on FYI:

Scamwatch Student tax rebates

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/scamwatch-fake-student-tax-rebate-emails-srkkqqcwt?shareToken=ce1fe3ef036a43c757b14938810be1155_

YOU ARE ALMOST CERTAIN TO GET ONE OF THESE SINCE CAMBRIDGE PUTS, IN EFFECT, EMAILS IN PUBLIC DOMAIN

OhTheRoses · 02/12/2018 18:22

Oh she's lovely :). Just ordered dinner. Hotel is "full" of nervous families here for interviews tomorrow! Takes us back! I think there are at least 5 loads of washing in my boot. Her room was like a bombsite Grin. Much like she left her room at home.

Hubbleisback · 02/12/2018 19:04

Well DH has managed to -fix- botch together the washing machine which in its delicate condition can now do half loads. So that will be an estimated 20 washes for DS stuff alone!! Hmm

goodbyestranger · 02/12/2018 19:55

Hubble the only thing with Blackwell's is that there are only pre-packed sandwiches for lunch. Perhaps we're hungrier/ greedier than you :)

Errol I e-mailed the same warning to all of my seven older DC days ago, when it was on the BBC. It's a real concern but they all replied that they were aware - fortunately most DC these days seem savvier than I would have been.

goodbyestranger · 02/12/2018 20:01

The apparently random post about sandwiches was intended for the applicant thread :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/12/2018 20:17

Thanks for the warning!

OP posts:
Hubbleisback · 02/12/2018 21:20

Not greedier Goodbye, just hungrier!! I make up for it at other times I am sure. Grin

PandaG · 03/12/2018 05:39

Thanks for the warning!

We replaced DS's bed and wardrobe while he was away this term. He now wants a new desk (or rather the mdf to build one himself to his specifications) to fit in the bay window, so he spent all of yesterday afternoon shifting the furniture round so he can work out if the layout works, and therefore calculate how big a desk he can have. He consequently still has boxes all over his bedroom, but at least he managed to clear the bed, I was half expecting him to need to sleep on our sofa bed last night!

We went out for lunch yesterday on tesco vouchers, which we converted right at the last minute before they went down from 4x value to 3x value (I think). The vouchers go out of date today or tomorrow. His best friend's mum obviously converted vouchers at the same time, and has some left, so he has been invited out for lunch today, he is a happy happy!

PandaG · 03/12/2018 05:40

*happy chappy! Darn autocorrect!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/12/2018 10:23

dd has boxes all over the spare room. We need it back by tomorrow. It looks like quite an overwhelming amount to fit back into a very tidy bedroom, so I might give her a bit of a hand.

The laundry has commenced! It's lovely to have her home x
