old thread

A chat/support thread for parents of undergrads who have entered the quite frankly slightly odd world of Oxbridge. Grin

Tinlegs how awful. Poor lad. Am collecting sunday, coming back Monday so have time on hands if he's in Cambs. Let me know if he needs anything. And my hairy hands off the internet will do their best. Even if it's only bunging a food parcel and charger into reception. Poor sod x

DS broke his nose badly in first term. There was a sobbing call from A&E on Saturday eve. We'd been out and couldn't drive up. Took him to outpatients on the Friday morning. Lovely dr there who murmured about plastics then said he could give it a go under local. DS asked if cd go clubbing later and as dr said yes, said fine. Dr shoved in local and yanked with the heels of his hand. It crunched, I felt nauseous. DS nose and cheeks turned pale blue. He had to lie down for 5 minute as he felt dizzy when he first got up.

10 minutes later he wolfed the biggest baguette I've ever seen and downed a massive latte. Was clubbing that night after eating a massive steak.

His nose was perfect. It had been a tiny bit crook post the previous rugby incident.

These things can have happy endings Grin

It is almost a year to the day since his dad also broke a bone. Am finding it hard. He is fine. Has food. A bed. Top hospital sndvis being operated on by a Professor (hopefully of medicine and not of History or Classics).

But, we are 12 hours away.

Sunndowne · 30/11/2018 20:39

oooh. 12 hrs - that must feel hard- but as you say, prof. looking after him. They are perhpas more resilient at this age than we realise, surprise us how much they can look after themselves.

Do hope he feels okay soon! And is home with you very soon!

ofteninaspin · 30/11/2018 21:17

Your poor DS tinlegs. Hope all goes well tomorrow and your DS is able to travel home very soon.

PandaG · 01/12/2018 00:11

Oh tinlegs, that must be so hard. Much love.

Hubbleisback · 01/12/2018 02:38

DS stuff is home - mountains of washing, Washing machine took one look and decided no more, literally broke down!! DS returns tomorrow by train and no doubt expecting clean clothes. Can't wait to have him back though.

Good luck to those with injuries and wishing them all a speedy recovery. At least mine no longer needs crutches!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2018 08:23

oh no Hubble!!! I'm just going to pop out to give my washing machine a pep talk.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2018 08:24

I hope it goes well today Tinlegs. I hope it is a relevant professor too!

Thanks. He is in hugely good spirits and should have vacated his room today but college are letting him keep it - for now. Want him home!!

Sunndowne · 01/12/2018 09:13

I'm very naughty -as my DD is there a few extra days and has time on her hands, she's doing her own washing! Terrible mum!

Oh dear to broken washing machines when all home at Christmas! Hope it's sorted.

Hope your DS reports feeling on mend tinlegs. And indeed that professor knows his stuff in mending! Flowers Smile

Sunndowne · 01/12/2018 09:19

Forgot to ask Hubble - how did it go for your poor DS on crutches? Could he get to lectures etc?
Glad he's better.😊

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2018 10:00

I love that colleges can be so flexible and reasonable.

OP posts:
Hubbleisback · 01/12/2018 10:41

Thanks Sunndowne. He gave up on the crutches fairly early on as he was very clumsy on them, much to the merriment of others! He seemed to prefer the hop along look and as far as I know he made it to some lectures. Wink

Hubbleisback · 01/12/2018 10:51

OYBBK any thoughts on snow at Christmas?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2018 10:54

Blimey it's that time of year! I'll start a thread when I'm at home. In Cambridge at present

Wonderful couple of hours having DD home yesterday evening, before heading off to Victoria coach station for Varsity ski trip. Can't move here for bags, but do I care, heck do I....
All the advice on readjustment noted - real test will be when she's been home for a week!! And as others have commented, a lot of work has come home too.
Good luck everyone collecting this weekend - my calf muscles are really feeling it from those stairs yesterday !!

wannabebetter · 01/12/2018 12:35

En route to airport to collect DS - he had complete meltdown over packing last night & I felt v guilty not collecting by car!!! But, he's sorted, he's on the plane and I'll see him v soon!!! Good luck everyone with the collections!!!

PandaG · 01/12/2018 13:52

And he is home, and the first load of washing is on. Can't complain, he has only brought a couple of loads home with him and one is bedding and towels. So happy to have him back, wonder how long before we all wind each other up?!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2018 17:22

On our way home. :)

Getting DDS stuff into the car while a porter watched on impassively took a few deep breaths and me demanding everyone stood back while I sorted it Grin

DD is really exhausted. She needs a few quiet days I think.

OP posts:
OhTheRoses · 01/12/2018 17:33

Oh no OYBBK. DD's porters are wonderful.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2018 17:40

I think DDS colleges porters are to students. I get the feeling that parents are seen as a necessary evil!
