Lancaster University

Dd starting in two weeks...course that she feels is great...But she is having a wobble....any positive feedback and experience of the University would be really helpful.

No personal experience, but it has a great reputation and a former colleague works there and rates it. Natural to be nervous but I'm sure she'll be fine.

Did part of my masters there. Great university town. Super campus. Easy to make friends. Great fun.

I know three people who are there. Two are very socially anxious; one struggled with bullying at school, the other went to a lovely, small safe school but really they both wouldn’t be suited a city/large campus uni.

All three have loved it. The campus is buzzing, they all loved freshers and went out and really lived it up. Lancaster as a place is also actually lovely, i was surprised at how kind and friendly everyone was! The campus accommodation is modern and the courses have also all been excellent and really supportive. Particularly the options of doing majors and minors; I’m not sure exactly how it works but it’s a great curriculum. They can’t say anything bad about it other than it’s a very long way from where they’re from but it’s worth the journey.

A wobble is so normal and she will be fine - I wish I was going actually!

We went to the open day there on Saturday and really liked it. Glad to hear such positive reviews.

DH went to uni there, he loved it. We went back recently and nothing had changed so he still loved it. He did law and got a great job out of his degree

DS going back in a few weeks. Loves the university, town and most importantly his course (Physical sciences). Has made good friends across a wide variety of disciplines. He works hard and has found the course challenging and really stimulating and the academics approachable and helpful. He plays hard too though and the accessibility of sports activities is great as are the social aspects of life. It's a very safe campus and he loves the community aspect.
A wobble is totally understandable but hopefully by the end of the first few weeks that will all be forgotten.

My DS is a long way from home too but no homesickness to date. I hope your DD enjoys her time there. Good luck to both of you.

Many thanks...she is studying Natural sciences. She too loved it when she visited. I think I needed some positive reinforcement...thank you all

I went about two life times ago and absolutely loved it. If I meet a fellow graduate- even now - we connect with a self satisfied, secret smile of recognition 😀 I never heard of anyone who didn't love it.

DD's only reserve is that the university is campus based, and she would prefer a city university. We are off to do a campus tour of Newcastle on Friday as their open day clashed with Lancaster's.

We are 270+ miles away from Lancaster but it is a popular destination for local students. One of our DCs' friends has just graduated and another (NatSci, but don't ask me which pathway) has just gone off 'across the Pond' on a year abroad. I've heard no complaints about the university or the city from either of them.

I went there and loved it. The fact that its campus based is great. You get to know far more people and the social side of things is just amazing.

Its also a well regarded university and looks good on a CV. I've certainly done alright for being there.

Tell her she will love it. Which college is she in?

It was my son's insurance choice. We went to the day for offerholders and loved it. He didn't end up going there but based on what we saw I think it would have been great. Good luck to your daughter. What she's feeling now is almost certainly just last minute nerves, not specific to Lancaster.

My DS is going to Lancaster too in a
couple of weeks.
He's looking forward to it, but is quiet, fairly shy and certainly not a party animal (unlike his 3rd Year sister - she's at Nottingham)

I worry that he'll hide away in his room and not socialise, because it's
easier. His two friends locally went away a year ago and since then he's spent most of his time at home. In his room! 😩
He's quite happy on his own, but will he be without us downstairs?
Worry, worry...!

he won't be on his own 3cats. First years are in halls and he'll have a ready made corridor crowd.

cloud - I know; I wasn't worried about DD when she went (and much further away) as she makes friends easily. I just hope he gets a good crowd in his halls. He's in a 6 room flat. And.. he's on campus, so a much better fit for him I hope.

I'm a lonsdale girl so I was on a large corridor. I was in halls in my first and third year. It won't matter if his flat are not a natural fit. Its just the security of a group to go about with initially even if some people ultimately drift off a bit and end up socialising with other groups.

Lovely to read all these positive messages :) Dd is also starting at Lancaster and will be a grizedale girl, she is anxious about it, mostly the social aspects but also really looking forward to it
