DS will be in Fylde college. He picked it as it's known to be sporty, but he's more into tennis and badminton, and loves watching and following football but doesn't play.
He's such an introvert, and I'm worried he's going to be with a load of rugger buggers and feel even more intimated and hide himself away.
He's really looking forward to it though (more than me with my empty nest!)

user187656748 · 24/09/2018 10:18

He won't be stuck with only Rugby boys in fylde. But in any event rugby boys and fans are generally well mannered, disciplined, nice kids and so I wouldn't be concerned about that anyway.

Spudlet · 24/09/2018 10:30

Oh god, the shite disco! I too had managed to erase that from my brain (the fact that we only ever got to it after a full campus bar crawl probably contributed to this Blush)Grin

3catsandcounting · 24/09/2018 10:32

Thanks User. Sorry, I wasn't criticising the rugby boys - have known a fair few in my younger days 😉 so I know they like to party! My own DHs friends are grown-up rugby boys now!

I just know he's a quiet soul who feels intimidated by more robust, confident types, but that's something he will have to deal with and will hopefully bring him out of his shell.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 24/09/2018 12:12

I went on rightmove to look at houses in Lancaster because of this thread!

I knew a big group of rugby boys who were all in Furness when I was there so I think there's quite a mix in each college so I'm sure your DS will find like- minded people.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 24/09/2018 12:57

That’s what I liked about the college system - it helped to create smaller more manageable ‘communities’ and social networks so you could settle in quite quickly in my view.
The college identity remains strong even twenty years later it seems (although I don’t accept the Lonsdale move to South Hmm) so even though it’s easiest to meet people through college activities & your neighbours in halls, you also get your course friends, sports friends & club friends too.

Good luck today Canada, and anyone else whose heading up to Lancaster. We're wending our way up soon (only 40 mins for us) so feel much better than I did when DD went to Nottingham.

RandomMess · 30/09/2018 10:54

I'm staying firmly home, was busy enough yesterday Grin

Welcome to the city everyone!! Assuming it's open have an ice cream on campus, they're awesome!

3catsandcounting · 30/09/2018 11:05

Is that Wallings ice cream Random? We used to visit their farm shop in Cockerham when the DCs were little.

RandomMess · 30/09/2018 11:07

It is indeed!

RandomMess · 30/09/2018 11:10

The restaurant at the Leisure Park as a Wallings place too!

Canadalife · 30/09/2018 22:02

Mission accomplished..Dd has arrived. We were very impressed by the welcome and the organisation of arrival day. Her room is bright and has more storage than imagined. Lancaster itself was very busy...but we really liked it. Dd had visited...but DH and I had not. We felt good leaving her there and wish her and all other new arrivals the best. Thanks for your kind words of support. It was very helpful to have such positivity to calm the pre university nerves.

That's great Canada. DS has also settled in and gone to the college bar tonight with his flatmates, who seem a good bunch.
May they all thrive, and have a great experience.

SelfCareAndKindness · 01/10/2018 07:07

Enjoy! It's the loveliest place to spend a few years. Wine

LoniceraJaponica · 01/10/2018 11:30

Lancaster has slipped into 3rd place for DD. She really prefers a city university, and Manchester and Newcastle have put Lancaster out of the running now.

Sparklyfee · 01/10/2018 12:11

Welcome to Lancaster. It was really busy this weekend with all the students returning. They'll love it. Had a happy reminisce to my arrival in Lancaster all those years decades ago

Justanothermile · 01/10/2018 15:40

DS was dropped off yesterday too and you sum it up well canada, so many helpers on hand to welcome the freshers, DS’s room is lovely, as is the kitchen, the same friendly feel that we’ve had on previous visits. I’m sure DS will be happy there.

Very busy, yes agree!

3catsandcounting · 02/10/2018 19:32

It seems to be going well at Lancaster. My introverted DS is on his 3rd night out. He's foregone the 'big night out' in town in favour of the 'quieter' event in the college bar. But... he's out, and socialising with his housemates. 😊

sluj · 02/10/2018 19:44

It hasn't taken him long to bond with his college bar then! Glad it's going well. My DS is now in year 3 at UEA and it all gets so much easier to send him off each term 😁

3catsandcounting · 02/10/2018 22:31

sluj - it does get easier with each term. DD is also in her 3rd year,
at Nottingham. I never worried about her socialising 🙄
but DS is a quiet soul and now hopefully he'll find his people and make long lasting friends.

LouiseHumphreys81 · 02/10/2018 22:40

Can't believe Doreen is fine, many a night we ended up in county after the cross campus bar crawl! I was a grizedale girl but most of my friends lived in county, and worked in the bar there, and the Carlton, and springs with the sweaty walls! And the peacocks!!

I had a blast at Lancaster, and am still good friends with people I met there despite it being 16 ish years since I graduated!

I'm actually slightly jealous of all the new starters, it really is a fab uni!

LouiseHumphreys81 · 02/10/2018 22:42

Doreen is gone i mean...grrrr auto correct!

Sparklyfee · 03/10/2018 09:29

@LouiseHumphreys81 I think I'm one of those friends you speak of!! Grin

Yes, sad about Doreen. It's a few years ago now but I went to her funeral and was good to see lots of old faces turn out. Most of the other old licensees were there.

We need a reunion! Xx

LouiseHumphreys81 · 03/10/2018 09:36

Hi Sparkleyfee!

Yes we do...We need to leave the kids with their dad's or grandparents and meet up somewhere for a proper catch up!!

Sparklyfee · 03/10/2018 09:56

Sounds good to me! Bit of a trek for you two to come up here so I could come down in the new year? Unless you fancy a campus bar crawl of course.

We will feel our age then Blush and there's no such thing as a blob anymore. Shame
