Fee, I have a feeling if we attempt a campus bar crawl we will feel our age...us definitely not in our 20's anymore with all the 18/19 year olds! Pretty sure I can't pass for a student anymore!

Maybe we could meet somewhere half way, book a hotel and have a proper weekend of it!

Sparklyfee · 03/10/2018 10:14

Great idea. I think we would get lost up there now Smile I know I did last time I went back.

Will be in touch to arrange something xx

I remember when The Crypt was a mexican themed bar called 'Hang The Bandit'. I can't remember what The Bobbin used to be called now, but we all insisted on referring to it by the old name for years after it changed. And we always ended up upstairs in The Alex at the end of the evening. I'm showing my age now (was a student 1995 - 1998).

Sparklyfee · 03/10/2018 10:25

The first time I went to the Alex I had a sparkly sequin pink top on.

It was as if the earth stood still while everyone looked at me like I had two heads Blush

newroundhere · 03/10/2018 10:27

Proud Furnessian here (1997-2001)...ok that's a long time ago Blush

But the colleges were (and hopefully still are) the best thing about Lancaster - Furness certainly gave me a real sense of belonging in a much larger community. Glad the see there are some alumni on here too! Yes to the campus bar crawl, trips to the Carleton (although I do cringe now when I remember they sussed to play the Jim'll fix it" theme all the time) - also Birkitts Bakery and Pizzetta on campus Grin

Hope your Dd has a great time canada

Sparklyfee · 03/10/2018 10:31

Burkitts is long gone too. But Spar still do the half parisiens

Just had a flashback to Chesney Hawkes stomping off stage at the Carleton cause somebody threw a tomato at him!

My dn has just returned to start his 2nd year at Lancaster. He had various MH problems before first going there and we were all worried about him. He is quiet and shy and does not drink alcohol due to being on meds - he was worried about nights out and making friends and people thinking him weird with not drinking etc. From the minute he got there he absolutely loved it. He has made loads of friends, there are so many people there, that he has easily found people he has things in common with. When he first got there he forced himself to go to as many clubs etc as he could and take part in as much as he could to make friends and fit in. He actually said that this was much easier than he expected as everything is geared up to helping you socialise during the first few weeks and his not drinking has never caused problems on nights out - the other students just accept it and anyway, not all of them drink. He loves the campus and going to Lancaster has been the making of him - we cannot believe the change in him - please reassure your daughter that she will be fine.

This thread is so great :) DD arrived on saturday and is settling well despite her anxiety: lovely flatmates, really fun and helpful flat reps, many good nights out so far (critical of the music at the first club but the people were 'great' apparently), lots of walking around campus and an academic day that's left her very keen to start her course! She's managing to do stuff with flatmates as well as on her own which as an introvert is essential, and so far has enjoyed every night out (introvert who loves going out!). She's finding Grizedale very friendly indeed, even though as an English Lit student she seems in the minority there, but it's the beauty of the college system to get a good mix of people and look after them well. I'm sure we're going to have ups and downs but so far I'm impressed (with her and Lancaster!)

Sparklyfee · 03/10/2018 23:13

Frog princess - glad she's doing well! It's a fantastic place

FrogPrincess · 03/10/2018 23:48

Thanks Sparklyfee, she had a bit of a wobble late afternoon of Sunday, when I think the enormity of the life change really hit her, and she felt she should have picked a uni where she already had a friend, but a good night out and some bonding with flatmates, keeping busy and the excitement of starting lectures have helped enormously! DH's best friend went to Lancaster in the 80s too actually :)

RedPandaMama · 03/10/2018 23:52

Yay Lancaster!
Me and DP both went there. He did a masters there too!

Sadly my uni experience was ruined a bit by social anxiety followed by pregnancy but I did finish my degree and did enjoy my time there.

DP loved it.

We both miss the city. Lovely small city, everything you need, great shopping and restaurants. You absolutely must try 1725, a tapas place. Best tapas I've ever eaten, and I've been to Barcelona 3 times.

Can I ask a q please? Dd has applied to Lancaster and has heard they may interview. Can anyone advise when they are likely to be held or how long it took before they heard if they were being invited to one.

FrogPrincess · 04/10/2018 12:09

DD got an interview and then an unconditional, her interview was at the end of February. She submitted her UCAS form quite close to the deadline I think and got an offer quite quickly, and the interview letter shortly after if I remember correctly. They only interview people they may want to offer unconditional to so it's a good sign. And it was a really relaxed and friendly interview. Good luck to your DD! What does she want to study?

LIZS · 04/10/2018 12:14

Thanks. It is for Linguistics and she has heard they interview for unconditionals. Whether that continues after the furore over such offers this year remains to be seen.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2018 12:50

From today's Times

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/head-warns-universities-of-falling-entry-standards-kl0tsjv7m?shareToken=ee58c2c563c121c299d545407ae966d0

Please make DCs who get conditional offers that some employers do screen using A level results. It's not just 'lazy' ones - it's those who know there is a correlation between a level grades and the quality of the candidate, both in terms of academic ability but also attitude: those who aim to do their best rather than the minimum.

FrogPrincess · 04/10/2018 13:06

yes good point, lancaster offer £1000 award if people get their offer grades anyway which is a nice incentive, DD got that and another £1000 award for another reason linked to her grades which I cannot remember....
