I'm another one who was there 20+ years ago. Can't believe the peacocks have gone Shock I was reminiscing about them to the DCa few days ago.

I loved Lancaster. Always planned to settle there but life didn't turn out the way. We often drive past on the M6 and I have make sure I see the Uni, Ashton Memorial and the castle.

Roomba · 23/09/2018 15:12

Yeah, there's a lot of us around who never left! Or if they do leave, they seem to all move to one particular area of Birmingham, or one village in Cambodia (seriously, there's a mini Lancaster Uni expat community out thereGrin). Or maybe that's just the people I studied with...

The peacocks must have died off slowly, which is sad. I used to stay in my bf's ground floor room most nights and it was very common to be woken by one screeching just outside the window.

The Carleton is still going as far as I know (as is The Shagger) but it's been a long time since I've ventured there.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/09/2018 17:45

Yeah, there's a lot of us around who never left!

We read a while ago that it's the uni which has the most former students stay in the area. I don't think it's because it's particularly good jobs-wise, more that many like the town, access to the Lakes etc.

Sparklyfee · 23/09/2018 19:26

@sluj

Doreen would be made up to know she got a Mumsnet mention. Unfortunately she's not with us anymore. I'm another who stayed in the area and we stayed in touch.

The carleton is long closed down now but I'm pretty sure Sugarhouse is still going.

Springs is now a wetherspoons and blobs are no more! The uni still has a similar number of bars though but all the colleges have moved around a bit

sluj · 23/09/2018 19:34

@sparklyfee

I'm sad to hear about Doreen. She certainly was a wonderful character to have in our bar. I'm sure generations of Lancastrians will remember her fondly.
It was always nice to end up back in County with Doreen after starting your bar crawl in the wastelands of Grizedale or Pendle 😉 Sometimes even Galgate if there was a serious crawl planned. Smile

sluj · 23/09/2018 19:35

Please tell me the Water Witch is still there?

RandomMess · 23/09/2018 19:37

Sugar House and Water Witch still going strong!

RandomMess · 23/09/2018 19:38

Expanding the campus and sports centre at the moment and lots of purpose built uni accommodation across the city!

Sparklyfee · 23/09/2018 19:59

The Waterwitch is still there yes Grin

Sparklyfee · 23/09/2018 20:01

@RandomMess

Purpose built accommodation causing never ending debates on Lancaster Past and Present! Smile

It's a fab place, glad my kids are getting to grow up here!

RandomMess · 23/09/2018 20:06

Indeed! I really hope some of the current HMO terraces go back to being available for family home rentals. I am only Confused about the flats planned on the old bowling green next to the Bowerham - parking is lacking as it is...

I'm glad to see derelict land/buildings made us of. Not sure there is much call for all the new build ££££ family homes. All I see is houses on rightmove being reduced!

Sparklyfee · 23/09/2018 20:29

I agree, didn't know about the plans for the bowling green there. As a student I lived on Avondale Road for my second year so was a regular.

The one near Dana will look better than the wasteland there did, it was just a mess.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 23/09/2018 20:35

The Carleton is still going. It was due to die off and turn into flats a couple of years ago, but it hosts events etc. It has a website. Next thing on is the punk festival.

Sparklyfee · 23/09/2018 20:38

@BobbinThreadbare123

Yes, sorry, that is true about the carleton. I was referring to the Carleton as we knew it, bus loads of students leaving from the spine every Wednesday night to get hammered on "stiffuns".

The Punk festival is great but doesn't attract many current students as such

Anasnake · 23/09/2018 20:41

Following as my ds is considering it for next year and we were really impressed at the open day.

Spudlet · 23/09/2018 20:48

Whaaaaat? No more stiff'uns? No more sticky floors? No more buses, queues on a cold Monday morning for tickets?!

Sad, sad times 😭

Sparklyfee · 23/09/2018 21:05

Haha, sorry spudlet! Had to break the bad news.

I forgot about the queuing for tickets

BobbinThreadbare123 · 23/09/2018 21:58

I was more of a Crypt-goer anyway...

Sparklyfee · 23/09/2018 23:04

And the Alex! (Also gone)

Sorry to OP, we have slightly derailed your thread Blush but I hope you can see what great memories we all have. A brilliant university

user187656748 · 23/09/2018 23:05

I wonder if any of us were there at the same time?

When I was there the Empire was on a wednesday night. The Carleton was just twice a term I think at the beginning and end.

But I am getting on a bit and might be misremembering.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 23/09/2018 23:16

Carleton was a regular Tuesday night in my time. Friday night a campus bar crawl and Saturday 'town' or a quiet evening in someone's room or kitchen. Happy days Grin

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 23/09/2018 23:27

Grizedale Shite Disco anyone?

Wouldn’t be allowed nowadays (packed to the rafters, pissed people hanging out of open windows Grin)

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 23/09/2018 23:32

I had literally blanked grizedale disco from my brain Grin

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 23/09/2018 23:46

I experience it in flashbacks.

user187656748 · 24/09/2018 07:39

I experience quite a lot of it in flashbacks - probably due to the £90p vodka and lemonade in Lonsdale bar.
