Humiliated Sons Exam results publicised

My son received his A-level results this August and is about to head off to university. However his college which he attended in their assemblies have being showing his picture and results in all the assemblies. My son did very well despite several unfortunate happenings during his exams, however he did very mediocre compared to the rest of the leavers. In their assembly's they put up the A*AA etc. students up and those going to Oxford/Cambridge, then they went on to show my sons grades and his less prestigious university as some kind of charity case. My son has not left his room now for a couple of days since hearing about what the school did, he did not even tell his close friends what grades he got. He feels humiliated and violated that they would do such a thing without his consent and that he was contrasted with Oxbridge students. I have no idea what I should do, I will he contacting the school and maybe a solicitor. I cannot imagine what my son must be experiencing

YOU need to console him & reassure him YOU MUST NOT aid his anger & assume the worst
So school results however good do not mean an end or a life time success (except to the school) If he goes to a red brick uni he should not think o fit as a failure, many of them help their students more than Oxbridge etc do & support them in getting decent marks. Even a uni degree at 1/1 does not mean lifetime success its often the hard work & practical skill after that that ensure the persons future. Success in life is not about money or prestige its about individual fulfilment & personal happiness.
I bet years from now, long after he has left uni & with hard work & luck
gains success in his chosen field (& his idea of that may change through uni & afterwards) he might find that: some of those who got into Oxbridge either left before completing degree, got a worse result than he will, or have not made the most of their opportunities from their course. Students do drop out because of the greater stress put on them from their own expectations or that of their parents
Tell him to forget the school & look forward to new opportunities at the new course & look forward to getting a good mark so he can come back & show off!

Sorry the school are being so awful OP. I’d suggest a written complaint to the head, marked urgent, along the following lines:

  • by giving exam results in sealed envelopes, the school has acknowledged that the exam results are private and personal confidential information belonging to the student;
  • by publishing those grades publicly without permission, the school has treated the student’s right to privacy with contempt, which was a breach of GDPR, also an unlawful breach re. the tort of confidence, and also breached their general duty of care towards the mental health said student;
  • You expect and require the school to cease publicising your son’s private information forthwith, effective immediately, to provide a wrotten apology and to revise their policies to ensure that in future the school does not breach the rights of their students in this way;
  • You are copying this letter to the Governers and will be raising it with Ofsted and the Department of Education (who you can also email directly), please provide details of any formal complaints policy;
  • All rights are reserved regarding legal action against the school and/or its employees.

Mid 1990s and the local paper published every single gcse grade and a level grade of all students at my school. So it was “name, ABbcefa” or whatever you got.

He just needs to shrug it off. But I agree contact the school and tell them it’s shit of them however well intentioned.

HAS HE LEFT HIS ROOM YET ?

IT'S 4 YEARS AGO.

Sunnytwobridges · 18/02/2022 18:28

OMG this is horrible. I really dont have any advice, but this practice of posting grades/scores is abhorrent. Should be against policy as I consider that personal information and should be private. I'd be raising hell with the school, that's for sure.

I'd love @Frances39 to come back and tell us that her DS has now graduated and it's all been forgotten Grin
I'd still hold a grudge and would have wanted my DS to have a written apology

Why do some people get so wound up about zombie threads? It's possible to discuss something that happened several years ago. Lessons can still be learned.
