On the basis she would turn in her grave if I included my father and not my mother as she always wanted it clear she supported my father from her teaching wages whilst he was a medical student and was the first married woman in her town (so she said) to claim the married "man's" tax allowance here is one of my mother too who lived to see my first daughter go to Bristol University.

Daily negotiations here with one over what the allowance includes - I pay for their food when they live at home. So I was persuaded protein bars and powder are food. We had quite a negotiation over that. Then you move to the issue of what do they then take from home and they remember older siblings 10 years ago coming home and taking back for the start of term some extra shampoos and loo rolls from my stocks at home which is supposed to come out of their allowance although nothing extreme. All very amicable.

A lot of it depends on how you spend your time. One of mine has more money now from the allowance than the other because the other this summer will/has had 2 trips to Europe with friends, at least one festival, more like 2, and at least once a week going out to a London club.

user, I was very specific in 1979. I said I wanted no shared room. Most of the halls were shared rooms where I went then and I do need my own space so I ended up in university self catering halls which were okay but I was disappointed as I was not expecting to have to do my own cooking. Anyway it all works out okay in the end.

Mine have not even opened the emails never mind looked at the do not forget lists yet. I just want them to take one day without stuff on and sit down and go through these things.Instead they seem to be doing things with friends all the time. If I see one I say how long do you have now to do X and it's usually zero time or it is 2 minutes. Anyway they are fairly reliable so I expect they will do all the registration or whatever stuff/photos etc with deadlines on-line by the deadlines.

Lovely pics Lucy my DS looks like the chap 3rd from the left - similar hair Smile

onadifferentplanet · 28/08/2017 08:16

BestisWest We had the name issue with Ds as what he is known as and what his passport says are slightly different. Hadn't given is a second thought when he applied to UCAS. A quick call to UCAS and he had to send them a scan of his passport and it was all sorted in a few minutes. Not sure what they do but it changed to the correct one on all the stuff on his Uni evision too

ErrolTheDragon · 28/08/2017 08:24

DD got a large envelope from her college which she's perused quite carefully, I think. They do a couple of extra days before freshers for the engineering students, but its not till sept 27th - freshers is only a couple of days and they have short terms.

Helenluvsrob · 28/08/2017 08:42

My 2p. Buy a new cheap duvet - wilco etc. It'll be warm in hall. They come all compressed in packaging so easy to take.

At the end of the year it'll be only good to throw away (😜)

BestIsWest · 28/08/2017 08:43

Good idea Planet. I'll get him to call UCAS. Don't know why I didn't think of that.

BestIsWest · 28/08/2017 08:45

Ah Lucy, different if they have a car. Mine would have to struggle home on the train with duvet, sheets and pillowcases.

goodbyestranger · 28/08/2017 09:08

Absolutely love those photos Lucy.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 28/08/2017 10:08

Great photos lucy

Lucysky2017 · 28/08/2017 14:04

Thanks. My father has the ridiculous longer shorts on as if he cut them from trousers and a hat (he always liked to keep warm and Scotland can be cold). I thought after nearly 70 years I would not be infringing anyone's privacy rights by posting those two.... although it possible a few might still be alive at 88.

I think they won't now take their car to start with whcih is probably simpler. If they need it they can come back for it. Now I am taking them down on different days we can fit each child's stuff in my one car as only 2 people will be in it so I think we should be okay. So I just need the one going a day early to find out where you regiers for that - it refers to on line hall induction but does not seem to say how you find that. It may be after they do the on line university registration in Sept. Anyway he's registered for the field trip and paid and uploaded his photo ID.

Horsemad · 29/08/2017 11:14

DS just checked and found that his halls are electric hobs, so any (my old ones!) pans will work.

His brother's halls were induction only, so he needed to buy new pans which was a nuisance when I had some non induction type he could have used. Hmm

hoyhoy44 · 29/08/2017 13:06

dd halls sent her a list of essentials of what to bring and on it there was a kettle so not sure whether to take one with her or wait until they all get there and see if they get a shared one

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2017 13:55

Even if theres a shared kettle in the kitchen, many like to have one in their room - thats what DDs is for.

BizzyFizzy · 29/08/2017 14:34

My DD's accommodation prohibits personal kettles in rooms:

"5.15 Not to use personal kettles, fridges or other cooking or food storage equipment, irons, clothes washing/drying equipment or electric heaters/dehumidifiers in sleeping accommodation."

So it's worth checking the small print on the contract.

unfortunateevents · 29/08/2017 15:03

Errol is that allowed - to have kettles in your room? DS's accommodation is clear about not allowing kettles, fridges, candles and a bunch of other stuff in their rooms - makes sense. Can't remember what they said about an iron, that is not likely to figure in his uni life!

hoyhoy44 · 29/08/2017 15:15

the list for the kettle was on the list of what to bring for the actual room which is what made me question if one came in the kitchen or not , the room comes with a mini fridge and also recommends a fan !
so who knows, think we will wait until dd gets there and she can always buy once there

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2017 16:23

I think she checked.

BizzyFizzy · 29/08/2017 16:25

Our attitude is to buy nothing until she gets there.

HSMMaCM · 29/08/2017 16:43

Hoyhoy a mini fridge in her room? DD would love that. She's already asked if she can take out mini fridge from home, but the accommodation rules say no fridges in rooms.

HSMMaCM · 29/08/2017 16:46

I've been allocated 2 hours uni shopping time this evening. Should I set up a go fund me page ?

indulgentberries · 29/08/2017 17:01

No kettles in the accommodation for mine either. I phoned the local council today and they said that student accommodation, whether university managed or privately managed halls, is a category M and so they don't need an exemption form. They only need it when they move into a private rented house in their second year. Maybe other councils are different though.

hugoagogo · 29/08/2017 18:03

Ds is still waiting to hear about accommodation- most annoying.

Squirrills · 29/08/2017 18:25

I never did the traditional IKEA shop. Mine have double beds at home and took KS duvets to halls which were very cosy on a single bed. I'm afraid I bought nothing new as I had never thrown away bedding, pots and pans. I had a box full of pans from when I got an induction hob. Cutlery and plates which came from late MIL. DS had a fleecy blanket which he took. Some pans got burnt and various bits got left behind so it was a good job it wasn't precious.
DS in a private let this year so has claimed the mini fridge which his brother had.
One thing he was pleased I got was some photos printed of family and cat. He had them pinned above his desk.

Mytimenow · 29/08/2017 19:32

DS has a mini fridge too, no need for kettle as doesn't do hot drinks! I've asked if he wants tea and coffee buying and he looked at me as if I had 2 heads.
