I don't think DD's bed will be neatly made. I think the duvet will just be in a pile on top, with no overhanging bits.

Double duvet may come in handy for subsequent student abodes, better to have a duvet too big than too small

Report
unfortunateevents · 27/08/2017 16:56

Yes, perhaps I should clarify! If the duvet was ON the bed that would leave a lot still hanging down - as most of the duvet will probably be OFF the bed, that leaves the majority of it on the floor functioning as a carpet instead?!

If its a choice between double and single for 4ft bed then def double.

We've done some uni shopping this afternoon ... my little girl now owns (among other things) a bathmat.ShockGrin

Having trouble switching his bank to a student one. First off, the code from UCAS didn't work so he had to get another one, now it transpires he has done his UCAS application in the shortened form of his name (think Dan instead of Daniel) so the online switch won't work. He can't get hold of them on the phone so will have to go in in person. He doesn't half panic about these things.

Did a shop for bits and pieces yesterday. Bedding etc and kitchen stuff. Was shocked at how much more expensive Dunelm was than Wilkos for exactly the same thing.

Adds bathmat to list.

People are very well organised. Mine will just take the duvets off their single beds. I have had a session with my older son who is moving to his own house the Monday after and we went through about 4 rooms and loft gathering up his stuff. We can do the downstairs and he can do his own room nearer the time.. I thnk he leaves for work at 5.30am tomorrow just when the other one gets back from a festival. I am looking forward to the peace of only me being here.

As I recall from when DS1 went 2 yrs ago, Wilkos is very reasonable.

I have ordered bedding for DS and got his bathroom stuff. Just kitchen stuff to do now.

Kitchen stuff caused a few arguments

Me: i havent got him too much stuff...its not like im buying him a sodding potato ricer, he is going to look bloody silly trying to cook pasta without a pan!!!!!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 18:28

DS2 allowed me to open my wallet today. (Shopping is not his thing.) He chose duvet covers, towels etc and agreed to the idea of a fleece blanket but thought it was hilarious and exasperating that I suggested he might want matching or coordinating colour ones. Came home and told DH that I thought I was some sort of interior designer because I couldn't bring myself to pay for a red duvet cover, green towels and blue fleece blanket. Is it only me?

Kitchen tongs for example - the identical ones were about £6 in Dunelm and £2.50 in Wilko.

If they take the bedding off their beds, what do they sleep on when they come home?

Grin at the colour combinations. DS' interior designer came out, all shades of greens and greys. He was very particular a few years back when we decorated his bedroom and insistent on the exact shade of paint he wanted.

DD has volunteered to do him a Freshers emergency kit seemingly based on her own experiences - seems to be mostly Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, cough medicine and Berroca.

Dd has a double bed here, her duvet is one of those combi things - a 9 tog plus a 4.5 tog which attach together for winter. So she wants to have 2 singles for adaptability. We have the one from when she was younger, but oddly enough she doesn't want to take the covers from that era.Grin

We have bought duvet covers and so on but are getting the duvet locally just to save the problem of bed linen at home - coming home for the weekend is trickier than it need be without a duvet at home unless there are spares.

DD is far too busy to shop, but I'm not to do it for her. She's going to end up with just clothes at this rate!

We're minimal here and always have been. The student helpers always like my DC as they have far less to help carry. Their rooms seem ok and cosy enough and at the end of term I can't accommodate the extra bulk anyhow so I don't encourage lots of buying. I'm amazed at some parents turning up with cars stuffed with pots and pans and the kitchen sink etc. I'm sure it all goes home each term unused and just a bit dustier to clutter up the hall or wherever. Less is considerably more :) I've told DS that I'll dry clean a spare duvet and we'll shop a tiny bit at the back end of September in the nearest town, which has one of those established the century before last family run department stores with lots of good quality towel bargains etc. and fantastic personal service. It's the sort of place even a reluctant shopper like me can just about handle. I have suggested he looks for a lamp on Amazon to throw soft light across his room - helps hide a multitude of sins which the ordinary harsh lights don't.

My DD has a king size at home so she needs to buy a single. She is buying a university bedding pack but will also get her own, as she won't be able to wash and dry in the same day.

They bring it home in the holidays - it's only a single duvet and pillow which they can get into the car and they share a room and have small single bets and duvets at home (even I have never had a double bed). I certainly remember with the older children giving our more chipped plates (if they wanted any at all) from home when they went off to university for year 2 as did my parents. This is how my children suffer for being 5 of them I suppose.
I think if the one going abroad before university could next week (probably effectively the best time for him) get on with all the on line photos, deadlines etc that would work best so that when he comes home with a few days to spare he has it all done and his twin surely could do the same. They just seem to be so busy. I can see the one at the festival must have got home in the night. Their older brother left for work at 5.30am - they might even have overlapped....

Minimal here too I think, Ds has two suitcases and two boxes.

This may not work but here is the photo of my late father aged 19 from his Durham University field trip to Aviemore in 1948 which I accidently found yesterday when looking at something else and sent to the twins.

Sadly he died, but not before my older daughter had graduated and gone into law and the next sister and brother were at university.
