Just back from taking Dd to Edinburgh to move into her brand new private halls. She's sharing a v.small studio with her boyfriend. It's very nice, but I really hope they get on well as it's very neat!

Ds was taken to his halls in Dundee last week and came home on Thursday after he had attended his chosen Freshers events. We'll take him back tomorrow with all the stuff he didn't reckon he'd need but does now.

BizzyFizzy · 02/09/2017 17:48

Dot, my DD is going to Edinburgh next week. :)

HSMMaCM · 02/09/2017 18:07

Dot Grin I do t think dd will be back. She's stripped the house bare and there's nothing else to take !

indulgentberries · 02/09/2017 18:44

Rufus that's a shame that you had to buy it, when the DSA assessment was done here they asked about the laptop and when they found out that the one we have wasn't fast enough to run the software they recommended and paid for a new one plus all the software. That said it still cost me money as I paid to upgrade it to the maximum ram and disk space and had to make a contribution towards the specialist software that will be installed on it.

A word of warning too, don't watch Mamma Mia without a big box of tissues; I watched it with my youngest this afternoon and when slipping through my fingers came on I cried buckets - I had to go and do the washing up to hide them from the DCs! I've never cried at a film before Blush

My DS is going to London by train on 10th with his sister and me, a double bass, bass guitar and amp and three suitcases. He has taken his double bass on the train before but there's no cast iron guarantee of getting it on. He doesn't want to buy the bedding pack as we have plenty of bedding.

No packing or prep done yet, except for online pre-enrolment tasks. He is doing a gig a 90 minute drive from home the day before he leaves.

I'm nervous and excited for him. Not looking forward to my empty nest.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 02/09/2017 18:52

indulgent

They told us at the DSA that they would buy him a computer a more than adequate one but it would be basically a work horse

We felt that a more flexible machine would be better for him but they have paid for some software, a piece of hardware and the relevant training and some one to one training on how to study...which is very good

So i think it sounds similar to you

I was very impressed with the whole procedure

OddBoots · 02/09/2017 18:54

Don't watch Toy Story 3 either. Sad Sad

HSMMaCM · 02/09/2017 19:48

We've got the dsa computer and software and dd has to arrange the training. It's just not going to happen and I can't do it for her. I'm trying so hard to look like a swan, while my feet are going frantic under the water. And has she organised the weekly support? Has she heck! Again ... I can't do it for her.

I keep telling myself "she's going to be fine ... she's going to be fine ... "

indulgentberries · 02/09/2017 19:49

Rufus yes, the ones on the list were very much work horses. That said there was a choice of several with varying top up amounts from £200 to £800 if you want a top of the range Apple Mac. As my background is computer upgrade, repair and development I opted for the upgrades and the cheaper laptop as it's only going to be used for university and the personal one is going to be taken for the internet and netflix etc so it won't get additional stuff put on the work one that will slow it down or fill it with useless cookies and so on.

I've never seen Toy Story 3, I'll make sure I don't. Menopause plus one leaving home and another starting high school on Monday and I'm an emotional wreck! Blush

indulgentberries · 02/09/2017 19:49

Xpost with HSM - the weekly support and training has yet to be arranged here as well.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 02/09/2017 19:52

Well thats not quite what we were told indulgent

Never mind Grin

And yeah...dont watch toy story three...i am telling you for your own good

Horsemad · 02/09/2017 19:56

Rufus, yaaay well done him Smile

Today DS & I have done more shopping, mainly clothes, with a few kitchen bits thrown in.

I am shattered. Grin

NeedMoreSleep, just seen that your DD is off to Bristol - which halls? My DD is going there too Smile

Does anyone know about getting Microsoft Office for a macbook from the uni? I read somewhere that Bristol do this, but n9 idea how!

thesandwich · 02/09/2017 22:06

Hello btm! Dd has just finished her first year at Bristol- your dd will need her single sign on which she will get at registration / freshers week and then log into Bristol it services website and all of the available software is on there. All instructions are on line so dd tells me!

innagazing · 02/09/2017 22:15

Brought my dd to London today to student hallsand left her to go to freshens drinks. Im stating in cafe Rouge alone and about to go back to a hotel. We're due to have brunch together tomorrow before I return home.
She hasn't worked out her wekly/ monthly budget yet, at all! Not for lack of me telling her to do it for months!
Mind you, eating as one and not two in Cafe Rouge is much cheaper, so not all bad news I guess!

Needmoresleep · 02/09/2017 22:34

BTM - if they meet, they will be able to discuss elderly grandparents. And maybe ......how they plan to take good care of us when we get older.Wink

We are both regulars on the elderly parents board. Poor DD, she was still at primary school when my parents started being ill. She used to bake me cakes for when I returned from my 300 mile round trips.

DD is sporty so delighted to have got self catering in Stoke Bishop. I can recommend her baking to any future flat mates. And she lives pet pictures, as she never managed to convince us to get an animal.

hoyhoy44 · 03/09/2017 09:02

dd has been watching a lot of uni room tours on youtube and decided she wants a tapestry for her wall. I know you aren't supposed to hang anything on the wall so will command hooks work for it ?

indulgentberries · 03/09/2017 10:54

Check the regulations, no fabric wall hangings are allowed in some residences, back to the fire risk again!

ErrolTheDragon · 03/09/2017 11:34

The only attachment method allowed at DD's college is white tack - not blue. IME command hooks can take off paint - maybe not if you take them off properly, but they certainly do if they fail.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 03/09/2017 12:25

Ds1 is inky allowed to use the cork board provided

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 03/09/2017 12:28

Only

Not inky

HSMMaCM · 03/09/2017 12:28

Only using the pin board here too. I think it's quite big.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/09/2017 12:34

DD was inky yesterday, doing some maths problems they've been sent and writing them out beautifully.Grin
