I took everything out of my under bed drawers for DS to go through what I've already got him, then had one final swoop in wilko today so I think we're all done!
Once he's gone, under my bed will be empty room to start hiding the Christmas presents! ( that I haven't bought yet)!

cricketbat · 01/09/2017 17:38

DS1 off soon for 1st year, I'm trying to leave everything to him to sort out..with a bit of help if he asks and quite a bit of nagging. Just went through an application for a credit card with him, for emergencies but didn't get far. Used the same bank as his student and savings account. First we put income nil, and not surprisingly it rejected the application. Then we tried income 10k...as that is what his loan/fees is...it offered a £500 credit limit which was fine, then crashed and then said wait 10 days! Grrr. Do any of your students have credit cards and did you put any income in ? I really don't know how to proceed now. Should we have done it differently? Any ideas? Otherwise we're not buying much stuff for him, he can use stuff from home...if I can find an old duvet!

Are you able to get a second credit card on your account if you have one?

Just wondered if that might be a way round it for you.

BestIsWest · 01/09/2017 18:02

Good luck with the packing eat

BestIsWest · 01/09/2017 18:03

And mother

BizzyFizzy · 01/09/2017 18:22

My two student daughters are cardholders on my credit card so that they can go to the off-licence for me .

BizzyFizzy · 01/09/2017 18:24

Another alternative would be to buy gift cards, e.g. Argos. Sainsbury's do a student/parent cash card, where the parent can add funds and the student spend them.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/09/2017 18:25

Ds1 has gone to a nightclub with his passport as he can't find his driving licence

How is he supposed to function in university if he cant even keep his ID safe

Sink or swim I suppose

BizzyFizzy · 01/09/2017 18:26

My DD will be getting everything she needs when she gets to Edinburgh, as she is going up on her own on the train. She can use my credit card to get her basics kitted out, although, strangely, is rather keen to use her own money.

Horsemad · 01/09/2017 18:37

Hope he doesn't lose it Rufus, as he'll probably need it for ID when he gets to uni!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/09/2017 18:38

I know horse

Im not exactly ecstatic Sad

Horsemad · 01/09/2017 19:09

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! X

cricketbat · 01/09/2017 20:05

Thanks all, I could easily add him to my card (and might end up doing exactly that) but I'd prefer him to get his own card and therefore begin his credit rating history...he's old enough and fairly level headed. He has been let loose with my amazon password and managed not to go bananas! Starting to build up a stockpile of cardboard boxes here!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/09/2017 20:07

Thanks horse

Dh has just found ds1 driving licence

It was in his car, which i was just about to suggest when he bolted out the house Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/09/2017 20:10

cricket

I work in a dress shop so have been taking them from work

Unfortunately they are taped up with the shops logo...so i think he will ditch them ASAP

Horsemad · 01/09/2017 20:13

I've bought lovely new clothes hangers - am going to keep them for myself and give DS my horrible placky ones! Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/09/2017 20:16

Sadly my children already have colour co ordinated wooden ones already

I am very, very sad

Fortysix · 01/09/2017 20:18

Rufus : Last week mine ordered replacement driving licence cost £20 and arrived three days later...

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/09/2017 20:20

Oh thats not bad forty

cricketbat · 01/09/2017 20:51

Shhh ...nobody in our house seems to know what hangers are for!

Horsemad · 01/09/2017 21:00

Hmm crickebat, surveying my DS's 'floordrobe' I am inclined to agree!

crunched · 01/09/2017 21:08

Feeling so inadequate reading this thread - you are all such caring parents!
DS1 off on the 24th to one of the universities known for agriculture,so third on the list of what to take is wellies!
Anyway, few pages back someone asked for ideas for a 'happy box' for DC to dip into when/if feeling a little low/homesick. I did this for DD1 5 years ago. It worked really well for her so I plan to repeat with DS1 but as long as he packs PS4 don't think he will realise his bed is in another location.
Contents: 2 pack of truffles
blow up beach ball
Photo of family holiday
pro-plus tablets
really posh socks
" " pants
£20 note (x2)
Percy Pigs
voucher for local cinema
in-ear headphones (novelty)
photo of dogs
There must have been more and I would love ideas of what others have done. I also included a voucher for her nails at a local nail bar - not sure of male equivalent?
DD1 is really into theatre, so I also bought two sets of two tickets for stand-ups at the theatre in her uni city... no theatre where DS1 is going sadly but I am searching for a suitable venue.
Well done us for launching DC into the world (this time last year, DS1 was 4 weeks past open heart surgery, so I am bursting with pride that he got those gradesHalo)

Horsemad · 01/09/2017 21:12

Wow crunched your DS has done well Smile

Can't think of any additions to the Happy Box but will watch with interest!

LittleHo · 01/09/2017 21:14

Wow. Amazing to be going off to university after open heart surgery.

Your gift pack sounds lovely. Smile You could get a supermarket voucher too.

BestIsWest · 01/09/2017 21:19

Wow, how fantastic crunched, what an achievement. And what a lovely idea.
