Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

Swing, poor girl, the combination of flu and sickness is really exhausting and uncomfortable.

Jury Service was interesting, reassuring (the legal system seems to work and the police like medical staff are trying very hard to do a hugely important job at a time when the workload is increasing), but also a tough case emotionally. Big brother is watching internet use and for a very good reason, and whilst I know there is a horrid dark world out there, hearing about it (luckily not seeing images), was upsetting. I won't forget it; I did a case in my early twenties that was 11 counts of fraud, but somehow that doesn't seem as serious or as worrying.

2B1Gmum · 06/01/2018 12:40

Swing.. we all got asked if we could do an 18 week case, and had to fill in a form giving reasons if we could not or did not want to. I put going to university visits with my DD and that I had booked trains and accommodation - whether this worked or was just luck I don't know! But they call a huge number so that only those who can easily commit have to do it. So I had a three day case and no others.

SomersetS · 06/01/2018 18:02

DD just back from making a new friend. She met the daughter of a DH's colleague for coffee who is a first year medic at Sheffield home for Xmas after 1st term. Seems the students love Julian as much as we Mums! Apparently his lectures are most entertaining.

specialted · 09/01/2018 08:25

Hi all, am new to mums net but saw this thread and am going through same trauma of interviews etc with DD. She has had 3 interviews, came out of Nottingham one in tears which she was gutted about is her favourite. Has Birmingham next week. She didn't put a fifth choice down, I really don't know what she'll do if she doesn't get an offer, which could happen. All v stressful! We loved julian at sheffield too!

Movingmountains · 09/01/2018 08:42

Also new - came across this thread on google search! Finding the whole application for my DS very stressful. He has had 2 interviews - first one at Bristol which he said didn't go that well - think it was the shock of the first MMI. Then Sheffield which he said went better despite having awful cold and cough (we also love Julian!). Nothing from Nottingham or Liverpool yet. This forum is so helpful - thanks for making me feel better about it all!

Mommymoomitzi · 09/01/2018 08:51

Welcome Specialted and Movingmountains! Yep, we all understand your pain and we are all going through the same ups and downs. You are both in exactly the same position as most of us. Our DC are all very hard on themselves and it seems, from previous years, that interviews never go as badly as our DC think. Use us as a sounding board. We laugh together, cry together and we all understand. Welcome again 😘

SomersetS · 09/01/2018 09:28

Welcome Specialted & Movingmountains. We do indeed all feel your pain. I have found it useful to chat with the others and take comfort from their similar journeys as there are no others at DDs school

Word on the street is Liverpool will start offering interviews this week (someone on TSR predicts 17:31 on Thursday 11th Jan!)

3 interviews SpecialTed is fantastic. Shame re Nottingham interview but I think you just never know how it went really - everyone else may have felt the same? My DD is now planning for Sheffield in 2 weeks time and predicts it will be the toughest (though her least fav Uni - sorry Julian)

I think things will start warming up now & kids will start hearing things - Easter break is very early this year so presume that might concentrate the minds of Admissions (hopefully).

One offer each, that's all we need! Good luck.

specialted · 09/01/2018 10:11

Thank you for your kind welcome everyone! SomersetS good luck with Sheffield, DD said it was the best of the three interviews she's had so far, everyone was very nice.
Like you, all I keep saying to DD is all you need is one offer. Fingers and toes crossed for everyone!

2B1Gmum · 09/01/2018 12:04

Welcome Specialted and Movingmountains, glad you found us - it is very reassuring to 'chat' to others in similar boats. My DD waiting to hear from Liverpool this week also, I think one of her school friends is too (three from her sixth form have applied for medicine). I do know a couple of fourth year medics at Nottingham, one thought her interview went badly as they seemed to focus on her fifth choice of Nuero science also at Nottingham and thought they would offer that but not medicine - so you never can tell! Good luck to you and your DCs - look forward to hearing more news.

Movingmountains · 09/01/2018 15:50

Thanks also for the welcome. I don't know other parents with children applying for medicine so it's nice to know there is support out there. It's so difficult for our DC when their friends all have offers and many even have unconditional offers. At my DS's school there are several applying for medicine so at least I think he is not too worried at the moment as no-one has a medicine offer yet. Though I think Oxbridge offers are imminent so that might change soon!

SomersetS · 10/01/2018 15:59

HYMS have finished interviewing today & tweeted everyone should get their results soon! 🍀🍀

TSR is getting hot in the Liverpool feed. Some think A100 invitations might come out today. 🍀

Wish DD would check her emails more frequently! (Joke - I like her slightly relaxed attitude - she's more patient than me).

swingofthings · 10/01/2018 16:29

welcome movingmountains (oh so appropriate name!) and specialted. It's nice that you've found this thread and not feeling so alone. I wonder if there are other secret readers following the journey with us too :)

Specialted, where did your DD have her 3rd interview?

Mommy, how are the pupils coping at school? Sometimes the effect of the tragedy can hit people a few weeks later. I hope they are being offered counselling.

Crossing my fingers to those waiting for HYMS and Liverpool outcome. I bet once again, it's all going to be like buses, all coming at once!

DD did get the nasty flu and has been really unwell like most affected. She missed all her mocks but then she wasn't the only one, so the school has been understanding. She is still coughing and battling an ear infection now but ok enough to make it to Manchester tomorrow for interview on Friday. I'm quite excited at the prospect of visiting a new place!

I think they were told that invites for BSMS should come within the next two weeks for most, although it could be later (so really no idea when it will come!) and still no news from Bristol!

Come on offers, we want a flux of it next week Wine Couldn't find the lucky charm so went for the wine!!

specialted · 10/01/2018 17:20

Swingofthings hope your daughter is on the mend and good luck at manchester. DD had third interview at Bristol in december. Was not one of the exceptional ones who received an early offer, is in the 'on hold" pile! Birmingham on monday, which is supposedly really tough.

I gather oxbridge offers were out today, DD's friend got an offer for medicine from Cambridge which is a great achievement.

2B1Gmum · 10/01/2018 17:36

Swingofthings, good luck for tomorrow and the journey there etc. We are going in half term and like you I am looking forward to exploring, I went to Manchester in my 20's with work but only saw the inside of an office! I hope the ear infection clears up quickly for your DD, my middle DC used to get them all the time and I have had a few, painful and annoying at the same time. I haven't mentioned HYMS making offers soon, I am sure my DD knows, a potential medic at school got a very late interview offer for January, not sure if that is a good or bad sign... didn't they like the first bunch or are they just hedging their bets before making a decision?
So hard to tell. DD hasn't mentioned hearing about a Liverpool interview yet either, although the general consensus is they will be in touch soon, their interview dates start in a couple of weeks. Mommy, must have missed a few posts so don't know what has been happening, but judging from above a distressing time, sorry to hear that. I was a bit wrapped up in Jury Service which was itself unpleasant, but with the right outcome at least.

adrinkofwater · 11/01/2018 12:13

Sorry that your DD has to do another interview when she's not feeling well, Swing. Hope she still feels that she can do her best at Manchester - an that you enjoy exploring of course!

Its all gone very quite for us, which is maybe a good thing as DD has mocks next week. But it seems strange after being busy with interviews earlier. DD hasn't heard back from any of the 3 she was interviewed at and has Newcastle interview on 31st Jan. Keep having to explain to people that its still very competitive after interview and that we really can't say that DD is sure to get an offer. Medicine just doesn't work like that! Sad

2B1Gmum · 11/01/2018 13:51

adrinkofwater, it is a very different experience and feels very lengthy, especially when Oxbridge offers came in yesterday - but my DS2 didn't get his Durham offer (Phil & Pol) until after Christmas a couple of years ago and Bristol were, guess what, the last the make him an offer, by which time he had fallen for Durham! Good luck for Newcastle, I think it would be a great place to be based, planning a proper visit next time we go up to Durham for DS2.

Is it MMI style interview or traditional? DD has 2 interviews coming up, both MMI, waiting to hear on Liverpool...this week maybe?? DD escaped flu etc. but I was a useless parent yesterday, I didn't check the ingredients on a piece of fish with chilli butter, who knew they added wheat? DD is Coeliac and was up all night with stomach problems - no school today and still feeling washed out. I really should not rush and must remember to read all packaging, I have apologised about three times and to the school too. [embarrassed]

Mommymoomitzi · 11/01/2018 17:41

Hi All. DD feeling better about the incident at school. The headmaster was fantastic and got professional councilors in to comfort the DC. Mocks this week - DD somewhat traumatised, I think the school does it on purpose, just to stop them resting on their laurels. DD starts yoga next week, she is looking forward to it. Nothing yet from Bristol, I think DD has given up on this! They are still interviewing at UEA, don't think offers/rejections will come out until March. I am really looking forward to our Cardiff mini break! Apparently the shopping is fabulous. DD quiet cool about interview (which is on 22nd Jan) only slight worry is the maths station, as this is not her best area. I say this now, give it a week and I bet the stress will have ramped up! Keeping fingers and toes crossed for those with offer dates that are looming and good luck to all with interviews lined up. Oh gosh 2B1G!! What a nightmare! Hope DD is feeling better soon. Adrinkofwater - enjoy the peace while you can, yes, applying for medicine is a tribulation for the few that the many don't understand. Specialted - at least your DD got an interview at Bristol, that is a real achievement in itself, they haven't made many offers yet, so hold on in there. Movingmountains, glad your DS is not too worried, do you think males and females deal with it differently?

2B1Gmum · 11/01/2018 18:17

Mommy, now I have caught up and read about the incident, how shocking and sad, glad the head did the right thing. You will enjoy Cardiff I am sure, we went a few years ago just for some Christmas shopping and a change of scene - shopping was exhausting but fun. Beautiful countryside not far away and coastline too of course. DD has UEA soon, doing it in a day which is do able with an earlyish start and luckily an early afternoon interview time, I am allowing plenty of time for taxi from station to Uni, that is the only downside the station being on the wrong side of the city! We can wave to my parents as we pass through Suffolk... After a day of drinking water she will be fine for school tomorrow. She is of course very knowledgeable about gastro diseases, not that I expect that to come up at interview! DD was diagnosed by a lovely newly qualified junior doctor whom is now a permanent member of staff, I haven't asked her where she went to medical school yet - next visit I will.

Specialted, I think my friends DD is still waiting for an interview at Bristol? Are they still interviewing? Such a difficult one to predict, hence decision not to give it a go for my DD, but I do love the city and the feel of the university area, some beautiful buildings.

Mommymoomitzi · 11/01/2018 20:34

2B1GMUM - DD really enjoyed the UEA interview, everyone was so kind and positive. Did you go to UEA open day? We thought it was fabulous. No offers, until all interviews have been completed, so we will be waiting together. Do leave plenty of time, one student was late and was not let in, as stations had started. Good luck 😘

Movingmountains · 11/01/2018 21:05

Not sure about boys and girls dealing with it differently! Actually think he now getting more worried. He said yesterday he wished he applied to Oxbridge as at least he would have a decision! His friend got an Oxford medicine offer yesterday. He said he's fed up of waiting - really feel an offer would help with motivation. He's also on the hold list for Bristol (wasn't one of the first offers). This waiting game is very traumatic - he also has mocks next week. Still nothing at all from Nottingham or Liverpool.

SomersetS · 11/01/2018 21:27

Mocks this week in our house so quite glad that there's been no news to distract us. But absolutely agree. An offer now would give them the absolute motivation to get on & work work work.

Mommy glad your DD going to try yoga. Hope she finds a little bit of calm.

Cardiff ladies - it is a great city. Have family there. Loads of fantastic shops in the main shopping centres but head to the "arcades" for quirky &/or independents. Easy walking from station to shopping. Hospital is a way out though on A48 so will need a bus. Cardiff Bay is nice for a wander & mooch - more wining & dining than shopping though. Half hour drive to some great beaches & coast. A great choice I think - sadly DDs GCSE's weren't good enough to apply.

Stevie3 · 11/01/2018 22:46

Catching up with all your news - Mommy how sad and what an awful shock to everyone and again hope all the support has been helpful to all the staff and DC's. sorry to hear of all the winter bugs and brave DC's battling interviews through it all - well done all. UEA for us next week but mocks have taken priority over the last 2 weeks here. So proud of all the hard work happening! Got very excited for DC's friends yesterday when oxbridge offers came out - a mix of joy and sadness but always amazed at how supportive they all are of each other.
DC also waiting nervously for Liverpool - sounds like we might hear soon - I've become a TSR lurker but she's been so busy with revision to be much bothered which is probably good. Good luck to all the others waiting here too 🍀🤞
Such a hard toil for medicine- there must be a plan to ensure resilience through it all!! ( and for us too thinking about what the next 5 years would bring!!)
Good luck to all in upcoming interviews Smilevery jeal of those going to Cardiff we loved the med school and the course on the open day but not high enough GCSE's to apply
Keep well all!

mumsneedwine · 12/01/2018 08:17

Liverpool interviews are out

SomersetS · 12/01/2018 08:30

Interview at Liverpool received at 8.12 this morning for DD. 🎉🎉

My top advice for everyone applying next year & watching this thread is it's all about strategy. It's very very very important to apply only to Uni who's application process suits your strengths. We got 4 of 4 interviews but if we chose differently it could have been nil. It takes hours of research but it's really worth it. I am hoping our knowledge here will help others next year.

No offers yet & still 2 interviews to complete but DD has the best chance she could have wished for. Wow. I'm feeling v proud of her & a little bit proud of myself too! Fingers crossed for everyone else!

Stevie3 · 12/01/2018 10:17

Yay - we'll done Somerset and DDSmilewe have one too!!! Absolutely agree applying to strengths (and a little luck in terms of UKCAT cut offs!!!) is the way
Good luck again to all the interviews this week- off to book bed and breakfast now
