Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

DD said it went OK but she has a feeling she won't get in. Said one station she thinks she mucked up. Did remind her she has full mars on one as they use the SJT ! Done now and she did her best so now in the lap of the Uni. Won't hear until March so can forget about it and move onto Nottingham. At least she'll know what to expect this time !

adrinkofwater · 12/12/2017 08:06

After basically deciding that we wouldn't be able to make it to Leicester because of the weather ( we couldn't leave on Sunday and ice forcast on top of the snow) we had a really good journey up on Monday morning! DD felt the most positive after this interview, but I think there are always some stations they feel they have done really badly on. Now it's the long wait!

2B1Gmum · 12/12/2017 08:53

Well done to both getting to the interview and with the interview itself, so hard to tell and as you say a long wait. HYMS tell them earlier in beginning of Feb, but there was not one question that DD could have prepared for, she felt fine but as always there are things she later thought she should have added. HYMS interview is clearly very different to her next two which are 7/8 MMI and probably a tiny bit more predictable - perhaps? 6 weeks before the next one, getting the balance between relaxing, school work and interview mode is the challenge for now. Good luck to those who have interviews before Christmas and I hope the weather doesn't cause you problems.

swingofthings · 15/12/2017 08:49

It's gone very quiet, hope everyone is doing well.

Very positive news adrinkofwater that your DD felt positive after her interview, that must mean she's done really well. When do their hear back? SGUL do give offers shortly after interview and some have already received some. I won't tell DD that though!

Any interviews this week or the coming one? DD's first one is Monday. She came down with the stomach bug earlier in the week and was too poorly to get down to preparation and it's now hit her that it's a bit more than being her smiley self! She's now cramming it all in a few days and has cancelled all her usual activities this week-end, so hopefully she'll do a lot more preparation.

Hope everyone is gearing up to Christmas now, a bit of respite in this mad time!

2B1Gmum · 15/12/2017 12:53

All the best for Monday, weather is looking a little better. Is it MMI? Have you or your DD watched any of Island Doctor? BBC in the mornings so probably both out - worth a watch I think. When DD was on Work Ex/shadowing at SGUL she saw some interesting cases and quite a lot of police! I think the first interview is difficult in that it is a learning curve, but on the other hand I don't think Manchester will ask the same as HYMS or have the same set up or feel - might be more similar to SGUL? But different again as a full blown Uni gives a different vibe. Obvious passion will come across I am sure.

Christmas is taking over, I work in a garden centre and am expecting to sell a lot of trees this weekend, the queues of people with 6 foot plus trees causes slight chaos, but so far all very good natured!

SomersetS · 15/12/2017 13:51

Good luck Swing & DD. We have Leicester on Tues (8.45??? Eek) - that's a glamorous night in a Premier Inn for us! DD is very secretive about her preparation but I know the "poster" isn't finished yet.
Have lovely holidays ladies & gents.

2B1Gmum · 15/12/2017 15:03

All the best for Leicester to your DD, friends Bro in Law studied there, may have mentioned, one of the youngest heart surgeons to be made consultant. As his own brother says, 'I can't really compete with that!' Premier Inn, great, clean, plastic and not too pricey:)

Mommymoomitzi · 15/12/2017 15:52

Hello everyone! Been a busy few days. After a good panel interview at Plymouth, DD had MMI at UEA yesterday. They were really friendly and DD genuinely enjoyed the experience. DD finishes school today, so should be in good spirits BUT Plymouth hold a panel meeting today and Track should be updated on Monday, giving offers. I expect that they come out over a few days, they did last year, but it really does seem like a big deal. I hope everyone is getting into the Christmas spirit (I have Bakewell Tart Gin) 2B1Gmum - I am so pleased that there are others who have not yet got their tree, I shall be in the garden centre line on Saturday. Hope all you lovely Mums are keeping well and that the DC are not too stressed. Will report in on Monday Wine

SomersetS · 15/12/2017 16:33

Fingers & toes crossed for you Mommymoom... Just think if it's over that might really take the strain off.

Mommymoomitzi · 15/12/2017 19:02

Thanks SomersetS - DD has mixed feeling excited/scared and a "funny tummy" which she hasn't has since 11+. We have another busy weekend. Hope you all have a great weekend x

adrinkofwater · 15/12/2017 21:41

Ohhh Mommymoomitzi - that's exciting and nerve wracking! Really hoping for good news for you!

Hope the interviews go well on Monday Somerset and Swing!

I think DD is pleased she has got 3 done! Now she is trying not to think about them as she she says she just think of what she should have said! Typical of everyone I think and who knows what the interviews are actually looking for anyway!

Hope that you all manage to have a stress-free Christmas!

mumsneedwine · 16/12/2017 10:40

Hi. So glad to hear of so many interviews and happy kids after MMIs. Mine had 2 this week and has decided she did rubbish in both of them. Hoping she is just being pessimistic but who knows ? Nothing going to happen til after Christmas I think now so going to (try) and forget about it and enjoy the mulled wine. Good luck everyone waiting to hear from Unis next week. Oh and I know of 2 kids last year who got no offers but both managed to get places on results day. It's a long game !!

swingofthings · 17/12/2017 10:05

Hi 2B1Gmum, unfortunately DD hasn't had the chance to watch the programme, but she's done quite a bit of research on St George, knows about key scholars, read their latest CQC report (which marked them as inadequate, but with some examples of good practice), read the local Joint Need Assessment, so I think she's got enough knowledge to keep her talking for 5-10 minutes! SGUL use the MMI, and I think they were actually the first school to introduce it. Anyway, she's as prepared as I feel she can be, went over many questions, discussed ethical issues, reviewed her PS, thought of examples from her work and volunteering experience, so can only cross fingers now. The only thing she hadn't thought of as of last night was what to wear!

I think Manchester is MMI too isn't? I think it might indeed be a similar set up to SGUL as they too are very experience focused.

Good luck with work, I can imagine how busy it must be this week-end. Our tree is still not up, but was pleasantly surprised to see that most decorations are already on sale, suited me perfectly!

Good luck on Tuesday at Leicester Somerset. Is this her second or third interview? Do they need to prepare a poster for the interview?

Mommymoomitzi, I can't believe that Plymouth are sending offers on Monday. OMG, you might be the first one to celebrate, how incredible that would be just before Christmas. It sounds like your DD is very comfortable with interviews, so crossing all my fingers that she blew them away.

I've read that SGUL do make offers a few days after interviews too, but I won't tell DD that.

I can't believe your DD already had three interviews adrinkofwater! Has she found that it got easier each time? Were they all very different?

Mumneedswine, I'm sorry your DD felt she didn't do well, but she shouldn't feel negative. I remember reading many posters last year saying they truly believed they'd done terrible at the MMI and yet got offers. I think that's because some stations are about testing how they react to questions rather than their actual response.

2B1Gmum · 17/12/2017 18:36

Swingofthings, your DD sounds very prepared. CQC is an interesting one, I worked to a company for a while that ran conferences for care homes on how to tick all the CQC boxes, they do need to exist as a body but apparently some of their inspectors are not as qualified as one might hope, but they are needed.

It is interesting how different timing of offers is, HYMS said early Feb but have now started offering late Feb interviews - confused by that one. Mumsneedwine, I think everyone has a wobble at MMIs, I read somewhere the more questions they ask and the more they push can be a good sign - although it might feel like the opposite. I am sure genuine passion comes through and that counts for a lot. We have a few weeks before DD has to get back in the mode, and I am sure there will be moments of angst before, during and after the whole process. Have a great Christmas break everyone.

SomersetS · 18/12/2017 07:54

Thanks Swing. Yes the poster is done - they get 2 mins to present it & then questions. Guess it's a pictorial PS - saves reading?!

Yes 2nd Interview. Sheffield in Jan & no news yet from Liverpool.

Wow - offers starting to come out - that is scary. Good luck everyone.

Mommymoomitzi · 18/12/2017 21:52

Hi - thanks for all the good wishes, thought I would catch up. Plymouth said that decisions would come out at 4 today. Rejections and waiting list decisions were sent by e-mail at 4, lots of news of these on TSR. The uni reported that offers would be updated on track. Here we are, almost 10 and no offers have been sent out. Someone called uni, who said track had info, track insisted that uni hadn't sent anything! At least DD hasn't received a rejection or a waiting list e-mail (yet) so, no news is good news, at the min. TSR is awash with frantic DC's, I really do feel for all of them. DD now giving up and we are going to watch some TV. Will keep you informed, hope everyone else is doing well x

SomersetS · 18/12/2017 22:09

Fingers crossed. Sounds positive if no rejection or wait list email but awfully stressful for the kids. Really hope you get good news & can sleep well.

adrinkofwater · 18/12/2017 22:10

How stressful for everyone! I hope you hear soon, or at least can get some sleep!

swingofthings · 19/12/2017 07:41

Mommy, that's horrible but it certainly does sound like good news as indeed, rejection/waiting list would come directly from the school and offer via track. The waiting time must be dreadful though, really hope it is all sorted this morning and your DD has her official offer.

First MMI over with. DD said it went ok but for one station. Told they would know by Friday. That's tough just before Xmas!

SomersetS · 19/12/2017 08:30

Swing - by Friday? Eek!
DD walking into Leicester (I hope she's with DH!), as we speak 8.45 start.

swingofthings · 19/12/2017 08:56

Good luck to your DD Somerset, last one until she can relax and enjoy the Xmas break.

Mommy, having read the tsr thread, it look like your DD will be the official first offer of the group as it seems to have been confirmed that no email = offer. Come back quickly to confirm and we can have our first celebration Flowers

Mommymoomitzi · 19/12/2017 10:22

DD got an offer at Plymouth!!! Lots of laughter, lots of tears and tonight - lots of bubbly!!!! It's her no 1 choice, but gets to go to an offer holders day.Good luck to everyone else, will keep everything crossed for all other DC x

2B1Gmum · 19/12/2017 10:34

Mommy Many congrats, I saw your post first thing and thought it I waited I would be congratulating your DD this morning, how lovely and before Christmas - enjoy the well earned bubbly!. Swing, all the best for Friday, so close to Christmas but better than a long wait. Somerset, is it just our DD's on MN waiting on Liverpool, I don't think they get in touch until very late - have checked tsr though. It is useful to have a few weeks notice, if for no other reason that getting better train deals! We drove to visit day and it took considerably longer than DH anticipated, I missed my planned visit to the Tate - might get another chance! Fingers crossed for both our DDs on that one.

2B1Gmum · 19/12/2017 10:35

that's 'haven't checked, tsr' - oops, time for a coffee before hitting Tesco and afternoon of selling more Christmas Trees...

swingofthings · 19/12/2017 11:19

Fabulous news Mommy so pleased for you and your DD. Very well done especially being her first choice. First offer here and that's before Xmas what a journey! xx
