Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

Bristol med apparently gets 4-5000 applications for 900 or so interviews. It’s a lottery.

Mommymoomitzi · 20/12/2017 23:04

Mumsneedwine. Is your vino getting better, as we hurtle towards Christmas? I have 24 bottles, it's an advent calendar that I made for myself! Getting to the good stuff now and we are medical school chat free in our humble abode. We have Christmas jumper day and breakfast at Whetherspoons tomorrow, at work, then I break up. Yippeeeee, I might even get a tree. Chin chin girlies x

mumsneedwine · 20/12/2017 23:19

Be

mumsneedwine · 20/12/2017 23:25

Whoops ! Being a teacher I broke up yesterday and have just poured myself out of a taxi after staff Xmas party. Have so much work to do for next term but tackling that next week as too tired now. For now, no more Uni talk until after Santa has been

2B1Gmum · 21/12/2017 08:51

mumsneedwine, I will be spending boxing day with 4 teachers and one chief examiner - all family members, this break is too short for teachers and students alike, but do enjoy your time off! Boxing Day for us means lots of competitive quiz type games - with lots of noisey and friendly 'discussions' about the answers.. (Prep for UEA interview will wait until January I suspect.)

SomersetS · 21/12/2017 16:51

TSR reporting some offers from Bristol!

adrinkofwater · 21/12/2017 17:27

I saw that too Somerset. None for DD thoughSad, and I am feeling unnecessarily despondent about it! I know they only give a few offers out early, but it would be so nice to have one! DD doesn't know as she doesn't check tsr much - probably for the best! May have to un-watch tsr threads over Christmas!

SomersetS · 21/12/2017 20:48

Mommymoomitzi I love the idea of your advent calendar! I'd make mine cider. Maybe next year! In the meantime I may undertake some market research over the next few nights.

Wrapping just finished while DD at work.

Ably assisted by Mr Baileys.

Agree Adrinkofwater - may have to be an early resolution.

swingofthings · 22/12/2017 13:23

It is my turn to be in the extremely fortunate position to report that DD got her first offer from SGUL this morning and it is of course the best Christmas present we could have hoped for. I am still in shock how it all happened so quickly in the end. Feeling of course very blessed.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas xx

SomersetS · 22/12/2017 13:37

Fantastic Swing! One each is all it takes! Hurrah.

mumsneedwine · 22/12/2017 15:27

Fantastic news Swing. Can relax a bit now there's an offer. I was sort of hoping my DDs choices might sneakily offer a few before Xmas (& she might get one), but think they are being very honest and sticking to late Jan and early March. Fingers crossed the new Year brings more interviews (Southampton and Liverpool here) and hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. 🎄🍾

Mommymoomitzi · 22/12/2017 16:11

Swing!!!! That is fantastic news.🍾🍾. Hugs to you and your DD. Everyone else, still waiting, hold on in there - this is a long game xxx

Needmoresleep · 22/12/2017 18:16

My Christmas wish is a place for everyone's DC!

Congrats for those who have offers. And good luck for those who have interviews coming up. It is still early days so I hope others don't lose heart.

2B1Gmum · 22/12/2017 21:19

Swing, just looked mums net to see if you had posted anything, really great news Glitterball!!, well done to your DD - and also to SGUL for such a quick response, they clearly know what they are looking for and your DD is it! mumsneedwine, - not sure how quick Manchester reply, but DD's interview is not until February and UEA are known to take their time, if we hear from Liverpool are all interviews in January? DD is taking teachers at their word and having a few days off school work - lots of socialising this week instead.

SomersetS · 22/12/2017 21:20

I agree Needmoresleep. Fingers crossed for each of you.

SomersetS · 22/12/2017 21:21

2B1G Liverpool published I/vdates go up to w/c 12/2. No half term plans for us yet.
Boy I feel like I need a holiday.

biscuit2000 · 23/12/2017 08:41

Congratulations Swing! Fantastic news!
We are still waiting to hear from Nottingham and TSR v quiet. DD called in the week and they are still processing applications so keeping fingers crossed.
Merry Christmas

swingofthings · 23/12/2017 15:47

Thanks everyone. Such a stressful time. The friend who DD met at the interview hasn't heard back either way and my heart really goes to her. What a test of resilience at such a young age to have to cope with this not knowing when others have heard just before Christmas.

Boy I feel like I need a holiday.
I didn't realise until today what a toll this has on us too dedicated mums so indeed, we all deserve some pampering and to be kind to ourselves!

I expect everything will be quiet until the New Year and then all will happen very quickly again, so crossing my fingers for everyone. Indeed, what we need is one offer each!

2B1Gmum · 24/12/2017 10:53

Going to drinks tonight and I know a friend whose DD has applied for 4 different med schools to my DD will also be there. Her choices included Bristol and Southampton, so suspect no news .... subject will no doubt come up for 5 mins and then the drinking, eating and singing will start! Host has a grand piano and carol sheets.... just what I need.Smile. Enjoy the break everyone... Xmas Smile

Mommymoomitzi · 25/12/2017 00:14

Merry Christmas to all my MN friends! I wish you and your families peace, love, happiness and luck for the festive period and for 2018. Thank you all for your generosity of spirit and for being there for me xxx

swingofthings · 26/12/2017 08:38

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and a relaxing time coming with it. Christmas is such an odd time, exactly what it should be for many, but also so stressful for many who try their best to please everyone, so hope it was the first for all. We had an interesting dinner with OH's mum more or less telling DD that she was making a mistake going for Medicine, that she'll still have many years of studying, so there was no point in celebrating now as she was far still from being a doctor, and she'll probably change her mind along way any way. Bless her, I put it down to age and DD dealt with it admirably. Ironically, I was thinking was great practice this was for her future interviews, so thank you MIL :)

2B1Gmum, I'd missed your previous post, so thank you Flowers. How did the Xmas even party go?

About Manchester, DD sent me the email she received and read the link, and it says somewhere that they would hear within a couple of weeks I think. I think they only have two weeks of interviews? I really liked the way their email was written, very friendly and helpful. Now need to book train and hotel as can't bear the prospect of the long drive. I didn't realise that Manchester was that far away from home!!

Thank you Mommy for your best wishes. I agree that this thread has been very supportive (besides one individual who we won't name and got it all wrong anyway!) and I expect this will continue until all our DC are settled next September and beyond.

Preeti74 · 26/12/2017 11:02

Wow!!! So many offers...congratulations to all those with offers🎉🎉🎉 We are still waiting to hear from Bristol and Newcastle. Got a rejection from Sheffield. Flying to the UK in January for the interview at Birmingham. Dd’s Very confused about what to wear for the interview though😅

alreadytaken · 27/12/2017 00:52

for a medical school interview you should dress as you would when applying for a professional job, definitely not the anything goes that applies to most student interviews. Most of your children will get places - it's getting easier to get in as applicant numbers have been declining - and they will be wearing this clothing again as medical students. They may not want it in earlier years but they will get it out of store later on.

Jewellery is generally seen as an infection risk in hospitals and not permitted. I wouldnt get any new piercings.

Getting 4 offers is rare but they only need one.Medical schools differ in when they make offers but many, if not all, will still be making offers in late March. There seem to be more offers made on results day now than in the past so they shouldn't give up hope until after that.

Enjoy Christmas with your children because once they qualify they may be working at Christmas and unable to get home at all.
