EMPTY NEST SUPPORT THREAD - PART 4

DD and her friends secured their house yesterday. There are 5 of them, and a new house came on, and they dashed over to see it, and then straight on to the Letting Agents to confirm they wanted to take it. As they were filling out the forms another group came in wanting the same property, and both groups' details were sent to the Landlord who confirmed they'd let it to DD and her friends. Small matter of immediate deposit of £430 plus agent's fee of £180 (per person). She's given our names and details as guarantors, and says it will just be for her room, not for the whole house! Presume we'll get something through the post soon and will need to check it carefully. She's in Catered Halls this year, which she has really been enjoying, but this should be much cheaper even though it still seems quite expensive.

That sounds about right for what DS was doing in the summer last year, he left it until late and then just slotted in with whoever, and it has worked very well for their household. I wasn't surprised they asked him for a retainer, just that he had to do it so early. The whole thing has been interesting to watch.

Hello all.
Another one who's DS has been put to work for friends and family gardening. He is just negotiating the long distance collection of keys. His house is a fair way from uni and he's not looking forward to bus journeys after the convenience of halls. It seems a long time since I was so apprehensive about all this a year ago.
Now back to the UCAS thing for DS2 going into Y13.

ISingSoprano · 21/08/2015 14:33

Hello - ds is just going into third and final year. There is much dissertation planning/research going on at the moment. Like everyone else, I can't quite believe how quickly it is going but he is loving student life and is working and playing hard! We're just starting the UCAS process with dd so it's starting all over again.

Doilooklikeatourist · 21/08/2015 20:11

DS is about to go into his second year ( should be 3rd but he had to take medical leave for eye surgery after Christmas of his first year )
He's been working over the summer , bar work , cleaning and at the big agricultural shows )

DD will be going off too , after many tears and indecision , she's decided to give uni a try , hopefully she'll love the lifestyle , being a bit of a part animal enjoy the course and work hard

madeinkent · 21/08/2015 22:38

I'm really looking forward to not having to keep the fridge stocked up with cooked cold sausages anymore. I don't even eat them. It's my own fault, I never should have started it. I keep on pointing DS in the direction of the fruit bowl, but although he is happy to nick all the soft fruit and plums the apples sit there untouched. Hundreds of the things.

Hello all, can I rejoin after a year away? If you remember me dd1 had a very rough first year and commuted to university for year 2. She finished the year with a good result and will commute again for year three. She only needs to be there one day a week so will also continue with her part time job. Socially it's been rubbish for her and she is getting fed up with being at home. Financially it's been great, she has saved thousands and not taken out the loan since year one. I still wish she had managed to make friends and live out but we are where we are.

Dd2 has been accepted by her first choice university and will be off in a few weeks. I'm hoping she has a better time. She has opted for a hall on campus which is catered. Hopefully she will be in the heart of all the action. She's also much more outgoing.

It's nice to see a lot of familiar names on here from two years ago. I'm well now, after being diagnosed with breast cancer last year. I'm looking forward to chatting again.

Milliways · 25/08/2015 22:53

Hello MrsHodgeGilbert and welcome back :)
Sorry to hear of your diagnosis but so pleased you are well. You will have a change with youngest going!

Notsoskinnyminny · 26/08/2015 07:47

Lovely to hear from you mrsrhod fingers crossed DD2 has a great time but hopefully knowing what her sister went through will have better prepared her.

fantastic news about your recovery, you must be so relieved Flowers

mumeeee · 26/08/2015 10:15

Welcome back mrshod it's good to see you. That's great news about you being well again. Sorry about DD1's problems but it's great she has good results.

Hoping that DD2 settles in well and has a better time than her sister.

Kez100 · 26/08/2015 10:21

Good news Mrshod. What a relief.

ISingSoprano · 26/08/2015 11:09

Hello MrsRhod - I remember you well. I am pleased to hear you are enjoying better health - long may it continue! Your dd1 may not have had the greatest all round uni experience but it sounds as though she is making the best of the situation. The lack of debt has to be a good thing!

Lilymaid · 26/08/2015 14:30

I am one of the original empty nesters and ... After 10 years of having DCs at university, DS2 will be handing in his MSc dissertation on Friday and we should finally have "done education".
Best of luck to all those eagerly anticipating/dreading the empty nest!

mrsrhodgilbert · 26/08/2015 16:38

Hi Lily, nice to see you away from the usual place. Good luck to your son, I hope he gets top marks.

Dd2 is getting very excited now, we've been out buying things for her room and its beginning to feel real now but she'll only be half an hour away so I don't feel too bereft. She can be completely independent in a big city but home quickly if she wants to be and dd1 can easily visit.

fussychica · 26/08/2015 18:46

Great news all round mrsrhod. Good luck to your dds.
DS has driving test on Tuesday so fingers crossed here before he starts his post grad course in a fortnight.

mrsrhodgilbert · 26/08/2015 18:54

Hi fussy, nice to see you again. Good luck to your ds, he was the one living abroad, am I right? Dd has failed hers twice and can't get another test before she leaves so will be starting from scratch next year probably... All those lessons!!!

Kez100 · 26/08/2015 19:14

My DDs house group are deep in social media conversation about colours and paint this week. They are so lucky living in a house owned by one of the flatmates. They are listing all the joint stuff they need and will each tick off what they've got to bring so no one has to buy unnecessary things. Makes our life a little cheaper :)

mumeeee · 26/08/2015 21:24

Hi Lily good to see you. I am also one of those original empty nesters. DD1 was just going into her 2nd year when it started and she is now 28.

mumeeee · 26/08/2015 23:11

Hi Lily nice to see you. I'm also one of the original empty nesters. DD1 was just going into her 2nd year when the original thread started. She is 28 now and DD3 is about to start her third and final year. It will be strange when she finishes.

mumeeee · 26/08/2015 23:13

Don't know how I posted that twice.

fussychica · 27/08/2015 16:17

Yes mrsrhod well remembered! He is a languages graduate, hence the year abroad. Now off to Keble College , Oxford -a sentence I never expected to write . It's his first test but his lessons have been very spread out.

fussychica · 27/08/2015 16:20

Ooh damn posted too soon. Sorry your dd hasn't managed a pass yet, I'm sure she'll get there soon. I never have learned to driveShock

mumeeee · 31/08/2015 17:50

Well we went up to Bolton to help DD3 move. Then we brought her home with us. She is home until Thursday now which is good as I've tomorrow and Wednesday off. So hopefully will be able to spend some time with her.

JellicleCat · 31/08/2015 22:04

Hello mrsrhod. I remember all the problems your dd1 had, so I am pleased she is doing well with her course, even if the social side has not worked out for her. I do hope your dd2 has a better time of it.

DD came home today for two weeks. She finished her exams on the Thursday of one week and started her holiday job on the Monday of the following week, so is looking forward to some down time. However we will have my mother-in-law staying for a week, so poor dd will be sleeping on a mattress in the living room while MIL is here.

Fussychica, good luck to your ds for his driving test.

Notsoskinnyminny · 31/08/2015 22:39

DDs flying as I type, can't believe I won't see her for best part of a year but after seeing the state of her room ..... Shock
