"
This is to ask for the help of all Mumsnet members, most especially anyone who lives in the Haute Savoie departement.

One of our members, Carol Sheridan, is missing. She is a keen and intrepid hiker and explores the high mountains of the area. She is experienced and resourceful but neither her family nor many friends have had any communication with her since Saturday 27 October.

She may be lost or perhaps had an accident and be awaiting rescue.

She is 73, five foot five tall and drives a black Fiat Panda registration AZ522AP

If you have any information on Carol's whereabouts or the location of her car please contact French Police and her daughter Fiona Conyers [note from MNHQ, we've now removed the email address to respect the family's wish for privacy]

HQ are hoping to post the MISSING poster circulated by her family on here."

What is the time difference? When does it get dark there?

duchesse · 05/11/2013 16:18

Getting dark now I would think. Sad

Bluebirdonmyshoulder · 05/11/2013 16:19
Sad

Thinking of all those on the ground.

Cohenite · 05/11/2013 16:21

:(

NoTeaForMe · 05/11/2013 16:38

I have missed a few pages of this out and don't seem to be able to find out...was it her car they found?

Thinking of all her family and friends, I can't imagine what they're going through.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 05/11/2013 16:41

NoTeaForMe

Yes it was her car. They searched yesterday and today with police, mountain rescue, firefighters, about 40 people all together, I gather. Today they were able to use a helicopter.

No news as of yet. The search has presumably been called off for the night now.

PetiteRaleuse · 05/11/2013 16:45

It is dark here, I would guess the search would have been called off about 45 minutes ago.

magimedi · 05/11/2013 16:48

France is an hour ahead of UK time.

FestiveEdition · 05/11/2013 16:57

5.15 is sunset in Haute-Savoie and it is so, so, sad that there is no news tonight. My heart goes out to Carols family.

270 candles are burning as a beacon of hope , again, tonight.
Feel free to post the link on FB or anywhere that people may care to add a small light into the darkness for Carol.

Or light a second candle ....each candle burns for just 48hrs, so lighting one each day will maintain a wave of light, and hope.
I believe in the power of hope.

Simatmum · 05/11/2013 17:02

I've got 3 candles burning now - thanks for the link. Trying not to despair.

thegreylady · 05/11/2013 17:06

A lot of the candles are going out :( I have relit a couple but do go and check yours. I was sure there would be some news today.

FestiveEdition · 05/11/2013 17:14

greylady
I cannot see any which have been lit ( have messages when the cursor is on them, or have initials below - where people have chosen not to add a note ) and have gone out.

Each page contains both lit and unlit candles, so that whichever page you land on, you can find a candle to light.

If you have found candles which actually have "gone out" could you please let me know the page and I will try to message the site, because each candle should burn for 48 hours.

hellymelly · 05/11/2013 17:21

I was so sure she would be found today. Very sad that she is still missing, her family must be frantic with worry.

magimedi · 05/11/2013 17:23

Carol's great granddaughter posted the following about the candles on Gransnet earlier today:

"That is why I wanted to thank whoever came up with this idea of lighting the candles. In some small way I was able to once again feel as though I was doing something for Nan in focusing all my energy into that candle & what it symbolised.
I have read through some of the messages left by others and once again am left feeling immensely proud of the person she is and how she has managed to touch so many others"

It made me cry. I have lit quite a few candles that were out.

Candle lit and prayer said for Carol and her family.

DameDeepRedBetty · 05/11/2013 17:52

Just added another candle, this time as DeepRedBetty, there are 324 from 15 countries now. Hope the searchers get a good rest ready for tomorrow, love to friends and family.

mummylin2495 · 05/11/2013 18:15

So sad that they have to stop searching when it gets dark. But of course the searchers have to be safe. If Carol had managed to get to one of the huts what supplies would there be for her ?

SundaySimmons · 05/11/2013 18:18

I really thought a Carol would be found today.

I was so pleased that her car had been found and it looked like she had parked it there herself and it ruled out a road accident.

Now with an ongoing ground search I thought it wouldn't be long before they found her.

I guess that being superfit, Carol has travelled on foot a long way. I hope she has taken refuge somewhere that despite being remote, will be discovered soon.

lotsofdogshere · 05/11/2013 18:20

I just want to say thank you for supporting the search for Greatnan/Carol. She is inspirational. It's great to see the mumsnet and gransnet communities united in their support for the search and for Carol's family and friends.

motherinferior · 05/11/2013 18:32

I have lit a candle. I hope the light finds her in the dark and cold soon.
