First thread was started by Trisagion on Wed 30-Oct-13 15:18:17

"
This is to ask for the help of all Mumsnet members, most especially anyone who lives in the Haute Savoie departement.

One of our members, Carol Sheridan, is missing. She is a keen and intrepid hiker and explores the high mountains of the area. She is experienced and resourceful but neither her family nor many friends have had any communication with her since Saturday 27 October.

She may be lost or perhaps had an accident and be awaiting rescue.

She is 73, five foot five tall and drives a black Fiat Panda registration AZ522AP

If you have any information on Carol's whereabouts or the location of her car please contact French Police and her daughter Fiona Conyers [note from MNHQ, we've now removed the email address to respect the family's wish for privacy]

HQ are hoping to post the MISSING poster circulated by her family on here."

Like many, I've been following the thread, but havent posted. Thank you to whoever set up the candle page, I've lit one.

Really hoping this brave lady is found soon.

JaneEjackson · 05/11/2013 18:49

It is amazing that Mumsnet HQ have still got this thread on a 'Stickie', thanks to all concerned.
The support being shown on all social media is quite overpowering, keep lighting those candles to light the way home, and thoughts to all those on the ground who are part of the search.

MerryMarigold · 05/11/2013 18:56

Another one who has been lurking and checking for the past few days. Really thought today would be the day. Praying for her, and her family. She looks like a much loved lady.

bluebayou · 05/11/2013 19:09

This is the latest link to the French news:

alpes.france3.fr/2013/11/05/la-meteo-complique-les-recherches-de-carol-sheridan-mieussy-en-haute-savoie-352279.html

Mist has been hampering their search, especially the helicopter.

On Thursday 40 extra men from the army will be arriving to carry on searching.

PaulineWhatsername · 05/11/2013 20:02

Another candle lit for Carol.

GoofyIsACow · 05/11/2013 20:11

Just checking in, thinking of Carol and her family

rowrowrowtheboat · 05/11/2013 20:21

Another candle lit

BitOutOfPractice · 05/11/2013 20:23

Oh goodness more positve vibes and hope from me here too. I'm so glad the French police are still searching. Poor woman

CinnamonPorridge · 05/11/2013 20:45

I cannot believe it. Carol, where are you Sad
I really hope you are a tough old bird.

PetiteRaleuse · 05/11/2013 20:47

In that article they aren't particularly optimistic but they do say that tomorrow they will be checking the specific danger spots where she may have had an accident while walking, and 40 more soldiers will be available on Thursday. They seem to be putting all the resources they have into finding her. Which can only be a good thing.

PetiteRaleuse · 05/11/2013 20:51

Would just like to add that there are huts dotted all over the area. Very basic but people usually leave firewood and water as kind of an unwritten rule. I remember being very grateful after getting lost in the snow with friends and coming across a shelter with firewood and a few pans to boil water - the Alpine hikers do look out for each other.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/11/2013 20:53

Thinking of you Carol.

toffeesponge · 05/11/2013 20:59

Flowers for you all.

I got all tearful at the 40 new searches joining in. Faith in human nature reaffirmed.

NaturalBaby · 05/11/2013 21:11

Another candle lit.

alfiemama · 05/11/2013 21:22

Another candle lit here also

FestiveEdition · 05/11/2013 21:26

I am totally befuddled by the idea that " they do say that tomorrow they will be checking the specific danger spots where she may have had an accident while walking "

I had long since given up understanding how this search was delayed for so long by local inaction, but why in Gods name would they not check the most likely accident spots immediately they found the car?

Carols family must be finding these issues terribly hard to deal with.

bigwellylittlewelly · 05/11/2013 21:30

We lit a candle at teatime tonight, I hope so much Carol and her family are reunited soon

Clawdy · 05/11/2013 21:33

Candle lit.

magimedi · 05/11/2013 21:42

but why in Gods name would they not check the most likely accident spots immediately they found the car?

Because there are so many of them and there are at least two paths Carol could have taken from where her car is parked.

I'm not being in the least bit 'neeer' to anyone, but if you haven't seen what the terrain is like out there it would be really hard to imagine the hazards.

DS lives in the same region. He took me on a walk down a 'footpath' from one large village to the next, following above a small river. I am a keen walker & quite fit, for my age!. Only a couple of miles & no steep ascents or descents. I have never been so scared in all my life. We were between (and I am estimating here) 150 - 75 feet above the river. A fairly narrow path, very steep drop, fairly sheer in places. This is regarded as a normal walk, even stroll. If I had done that walk on my own & slipped & fallen there would have been, in that 2 miles, at least 15+ places that would have been likely accident spots. It may be tourist ski country but it is still very mountainous & dangerous ground.

Honestly, it is really unknown to most of us what this landscape is really like when you venture out into it.

SundaySimmons · 05/11/2013 21:50

Festive, I understand your frustration but the area is huge and Without any witnesses, Carol could have walked from her car in any direction.

Needle in a haystack may not be far off the mark, not to mention weather conditions.

I have been impressed by Carol's incredible independence and fitness. Until she went missing I had never heard of her, but reading about her has revealed her to be an inspiration to women of all ages. She has proven that age is no barrier to enjoying life and in some small way she has inspired me to get off my backside more and get out and enjoy nature a lot more.

sanssoleil · 05/11/2013 21:50

Keeping candle alight for Carol, her family and friends and for the rescue teams that will be going out to search tomorrow

magimedi · 05/11/2013 21:53

Sunday

she has inspired me to get off my backside more and get out and enjoy nature a lot more.

Carol would be thrilled to read that.

And she would nag you to do so!!!
