This is to ask for the help of all Mumsnet members, most especially anyone who lives in the Haute Savoie departement.

One of our members, Carol Sheridan, is missing. She is a keen and intrepid hiker and explores the high mountains of the area. She is experienced and resourceful but neither her family nor many friends have had any communication with her since Saturday 27 October.

She may be lost or perhaps had an accident and be awaiting rescue.

She is 73, five foot five tall and drives a black Fiat Panda registration AZ522AP

If you have any information on Carol's whereabouts or the location of her car please contact French Police and her daughter Fiona Conyers [note from MNHQ, we've now removed the email address to respect the family's wish for privacy]

I am so sorry to hear this. my deepest sympathies to Carols family and friends and anyone who knew her.

Festive thanks for the beautiful poem. At least we can go to our beds not wondering where she is. Thank you to the rescuers for keeping going till they found her.

I was thinking about the expenses too and it is a great idea.

It's best to wait as whenim64 said - should there be a fundraiser I'm sure GN and MN HQs will help to organize and co-ordinate this.

Zing yes, agreed. I was just expressing some rather muddled thoughts.

Of course it would be for the family to decide on the most appropriate use of any donations.

Due to the IE9 fault I have been unable to post since Monday lunchtime, but have been following the threads, lighting candles & sending love & strength to Carol & her friends & family.

I am so very, very sorry to hear this tragic news

I am so grateful to the searchers and thankful that Carol has been found and her family & close friends haven't been left not knowing where she is, for as difficult as the certainty is, I'm sure the 'not knowing' would have been even more difficult to live with.

I wish I had been lucky enough to know Carol, from all I have read this since she went missing, she sounds like an amazing woman, really living her life to the full, age being no barrier to adventure! Enjoying both her solitude and time spent with her family & friends.

No words can take the pain away - all I can do is send you love & strength to help you cope with it. My thoughts are with you.

It's up to the family of course, but I floated an idea of setting up a fund for a small scholarship. Carol was passionately devoted to the disadvantaged children she taught and also immensely proud of her nursing granddaughter. Even a small annual scholarship of £50 or £100 would make a difference to a poor nursing student and it would keep Carol's name alive.

I am slow to post but I wanted to say how very sorry I am to hear of the sad news of Carol's death. Keeping her family and friends in my thoughts. What an amazing lady Carol was and I think that there is much we can all learn from her.

A research bursary is a lovely idea. Or a fund that allows student nurses money to have a placement in a specialist area away from their base hospital.

We are devastated by yesterday's news but heartened by the way our two communities came together at this time - and we hope that the love and good wishes will bring some comfort to Carol's family. She was - and will continue to be - an inspiration to us all and none of us will forget her.
