Is my 3yr old Normal?

I've pretty much ignored my poor 3yr old dd for the last two years and she has brought herself up amazingly well. My Ds has ASD and taken all of our energy.

Now, it is clear that my dd doesn't NEED much to thrive and I have no worries about her, but something her preschool have said have made me wonder if I am doing her a disservice.

They say that they think she is extremely bright and is ready for reception (she's due into nursery in Sept, but is a Sept birthday so missed reception by a coup,e of weeks).

Now I KNOW she doesn't know much in the way of formal academics. She can't read or do academic maths, but she can solve fairly complex problems and 'negotiate' confidently with pretty much anyone in a precocious way. An example is when we ate in a restaurant she wanted milk and I told her no, so then she said she was going to the toilet and took herself off. (she can do buttons, zips, toilet locks snd wipe etc. independently and well) Whilst she was gone, the waitress brough not only a glass of milk to the table but one that had been 'warmed up'.

Now I'm beginning to think this is all a bit outside normal, but with my first born having ASD (5) who needs help with the toilet and pretty much everything I have nothing as a baseline.

Should I just try and actually TEACH here to read or something?

Her conversations are usually about how owls build their nests or about who likes who at preschool or about waxing or waning moons etc. where she even gets the information is quite beyond me.

Btw Nono, nursery application places for next year have to be in by yesterday. We will not be in new county until 3 weeks time so have missed the deadline. Deadline isn't 31st August as you said.

"So Really, if that is true (which it seems to be), then what is the POINT of the developmental check?"

You may well ask. I think its used an excuse for health visitors to check up on the child protection families.

Certainly in Herts I don't know of any one who has had a two year check other than my dd. DD is on the 0.4th centile and we refused to have her referred to the paediatrian. My MIL is 4ft 6 and dd is in perfect proportion. I didn't want her subjected to unnecessary blood tests.

Its generally assumed that everyone has their child in nursery and that will catch developmental delays. In my area there aren't even 9 month checks. The other day we met a lovely 5 year old girl in plaster casts because her clicky were not picked up.

In my experiene HVs don't have a clue about autism. I had a HV say that my son was autistic when in fact he just had glue ear. The community paediatrian managed to find the real cause of my son's delayed speech and made all the correct referals.

I am glad your little girl is doing well. Gawd help children with special needs at the moment.

My DS who is 4 had a two and a half year check. He was 4 this weekend.

But was told that DD probably won't have one. Though she might as I am deaf in one ear.

We live in Herts btw.

DD did have a 9 month check. Not sure for how much longer they will bother with those.

I apologise. I made a huge mistake. Sorry, OP.

Thank you Nonno.

I appreciate things look quite dramatic and a lot if it is my own doing (my determination to think outside of the box can often lead to quite creative solutions), but I assure you they are true and the search for solutions really are a consequence of an unfit 'system'
