General healthy eating and exercise thread with aim of losing weight / shaping up. Aim to eat 10 portions of fruit and veg a day, and do more exercise. No bizarre diets please. Weigh in day is Monday (you don't have to weigh in but we will punish you by with-holding stickers). Diet coke will be frowned upon.

hello, Iz back!

Only put on 3lb over the hols despite a tonnage of bread and cheese and cakes.

Maybe fran's way of losing weight is ok

ponceydog · 24/07/2010 11:50

Flicking through recent posts. There was Subway in France - I couldn't believe it.

CoupleofKooks · 24/07/2010 13:09

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 24/07/2010 19:14

Welcome back Pointy. How was France? Tell us everything. Are you as brown as a nut and stuffed to the brim with brie and croissants?!

I cannot list today. It is too bad.

I will have focus on Monday. I NEED to have focus on Monday.

I can't suggest a name change Pink because I'm shite at those sort of things. I see all of the witty names and wish I had thought of them.

ponceydog · 24/07/2010 19:21

I am fairly brown on my top half, my legs stubbornly remain milk white. Had a very relaxing time, enjoying lots of sunshine and big waves.

I have started my post-hol crackdown already.

boiled egg and seedy toast and o juice
dry pancake and kiwi yoghurt
handfuls of cinema popcorn
cajun chicken with pea and leaves salad and carrot and chickpea salad
little bit of sponge cake left by dd2

My f&v intake has been dreadful though

ponceydog · 24/07/2010 19:22

I have given myself a new weight target. I am determined.

CoupleofKooks · 24/07/2010 19:30

i just went for a run and got lost and it was nearly bedtime and i was meant to be home so i kept running and i did A WHOLE HOUR OF RUNNING

i now have a blister on my instep
and achey legs

OP posts:
CoupleofKooks · 24/07/2010 19:32

pointy how much more are you going for?

when i look at myself with clothes on i feel quite pleased, when i look at myself with clothes off i think i need to lose another stone
tbh clothes off is just a disaster area which losing weight is not going to solve
i will just have to find acceptance i suppose
or never get undressed

OP posts:
ponceydog · 24/07/2010 19:39

I want to get down to 10st, that is my new aim. Completely realistic, I feel. My top half is still far too big.

ponceydog · 24/07/2010 19:39

gosh, your running is impressive

CoupleofKooks · 24/07/2010 21:20

i am just a comical blob round the middle
it looks like a slim person who is wearing a rubber ring

i am not sure my running is impressive
i want it to be, of course, but i think i am just running so slowly that it is not much more than walking with a spring in my stride
if my knees etc didn't get sore i think i could carry on more or less indefinitely
dp says fast and short is the way to go but i don't really like exertion much
i like trotting along through the woods with a nice tune on

congrats on starting to lose weight, avi.

Speaking of cats, mine sustained an injury last night. She has a streak of fur missing near her mouth and so looks like she has a one-sided moustache.

ponceydog · 25/07/2010 13:27

Well done on the running Fra, that's v impressive. Especially the getting lost bit

I HATE it when you go to bed and then can't sleep. It always happens to me when I've been out late and go to bed later than I normally do. It's a right pita.

banana on toast
2 necatrines
chicken caeser wrap
v small butterfly cake
hamburger with salad (pea shoots, cucumber, toms and radishes) and olives
smoothie

Probably about 8 portions.

I have had a boring weekend. I hate boring weekends. You look forward to them all week and then you let them float by without doing anything. I am annoyed about it.

CoupleofKooks · 25/07/2010 19:53

i hate those weekends too lemur
ours was quite good, dp and i spent the morning cleaning the kitchen, as it was quite repulsive
i hate dirty kitchens
it is about half done i reckon but dp says he will do the rest in the week, bless im

then we took ds2 out for ride on his birthday trike, and stumbled across this born again christian group, mostly africans, performing in the park
the zulu dancing was awesome, and then there was this fantastically surreal dance by a couple in traditional dress and very smart shoes, 2 sizes too big for them
i have no idea why
they waved hankies at each other and performed an interpretive dance to an r+b style song about jesus, including mimed sad or angry faces and actions, etc, where appropriate
i wish they would be in the park every week, the whole thing was mesmerisingly random

cereal peaches seeds raisins apple = 4
cheese toastie
apple = 1
lemon curd muffin
romaine rocket tomato cucumber new potato chickpeas toasted seeds mayonnaise cheese salad with asparagus = 4
chocolate

9
am going to eat another apple = 10

we need to cut down on spending - i have realised i don't actually know how to budget for food
i know it sounds stupid
i am trying to plan meals for the week and keep the cost low but i don't really know many meals that are cheap that we would actually eat
i can think of pasta, jacket potatoes, shepherds pie made with lentils, and things like stew, but then i find veg very expensive, or is it just because i shop in a supermarket atm? i find i have no time to go to greengrocers and drag it all back, and veg box = loads of time cleaning the veg and working out what to cook with it
i feel rather inept
did anyone's mother teach them how to do this kind of thing, or did you just learn the hard way when you grew up? i feel like i am nearly 40 and masquerading as an adult
i don't know how to run a household, at all

OP posts:
ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 25/07/2010 20:35

I know what you mean. I hate to sound all 50's housewife, but I do wish we had had lessons in personal finance and budgeting, and cooking for a family.

My mum has always worked full time since I can remember so we always had a cleaner and a hot school meal and it was up to my sister and I to sort out an evening meal - be it a pot noodle, hot dogs or sandwiches .

We had no role model when it came to looking after a family whatsoever, and I don't think it's a coincidence that both my sister and I have chosen to be SAHM's.

I do think f&v is expensive, but then again your household are vegetarians so I would expect your main spending to be on f&v.

I find the best way to stretch the food budget is to batch cook and freeze. I also balance the budget by having a few cheap meals like boiled egg and toast, beans on toast, jp's, and homemade soup.

Also initially spending money on storecupboard staples can help vavavoom a bland meal into something tasty and a bit special.

You also can't beat making things from scratch to help safe you £'s. It can be time consuming at first but once you get into it it gets easier and quicker. When I used to make a cake it would take me AGES. Then the more times I made it the faster and better I got.

But, the best way is to stop 'nipping' into M&S and Waitrose. I used to live in town too and know how easy it is to spend spend spend when it's easy and convenient.
