sherby · 21/04/2010 16:19

wow

Am amazed at the incompetency of these doctors, WHY did they not just scan her in the first place?

So sorry it has turned out to be EP, hope you feel better soon Charlotte

lou031205 · 21/04/2010 16:21

So sorry, Charlotte, and I am praying for a very fast recovery for you xx

thirtysomething · 21/04/2010 16:22

Been lurking too as no advice but very concerned for you Charlotte.

Glad the doctors have finally got off their backsides and given you the attention you should have had 48 hrs ago. Praying all goes well for you.

You'd think this was some third-world country where women are just left to their own devices in pregnancy due to lack of knowledge/resources and huge distances not the blinking NHS which used to lead the world in shiny, advanced healthcare.

Thanks heavens for MN and people like Aitch whoknow what they are talking about when clearly the doctors don't know their bum from their elbow!

elliepac · 21/04/2010 16:36

I have been following this thread for the last few days and just wanted to send my prayers and thoughts to you Charlotte. And well done to all involved in finally getting her the correct diagnosis and treatment which has averted a potentially devastating situation.

norksinmywaistband · 21/04/2010 16:39

Well done to all of you brilliant ladies who gave advice

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 21/04/2010 16:41

This has been such a worrying situation.

When I miscarried I had 2 signs of an EP and was told to take a paracetamol and see the doctor in three days.

Another pregnancy was conceived and I was given an early scan because of my previous m/c. When I had my scan there was 1 definite baby and 1 that might develop in to a baby. By the next scan there was only one so I decided it was nothing and was happy that my baby was okay. DH left me with the midwife as ds1 and dd were getting tired and the lady said "oh yes, you're the twin lady aren't you?" I was devastated and it was made worse by dh not being there and her not saying anything other than you can go home now.

On the other hand, I had a consultant ring me a few days later at home to say he was worried about me and could I go into hospital for more tests.

I don't understand why different HCP are on the ball and listen to the patient and some just think they know everything and have no desire to listen to the person who is probably scared or have some empathy.

for the rant.

mathanxiety · 21/04/2010 16:42

xxxxxx Charlotte

Speechless.

Lulumaam · 21/04/2010 16:44

thinking of you charlotte. said a little prayer. xx

AitchTwoZone · 21/04/2010 16:51

oh, this is a real rotten shame... poor spookycharlotte. such a lot to take in.

IMoveTheStars · 21/04/2010 16:54

I still can't belive how much Charlotte has had to push for a scan. Very for her.

When a close friend of mine had severe lower abdo pain at 5 weeks pregnant I took her straight to A&E. The nurse on duty was initially a bit sniffy, but as soon as I mentioned EP she was sent straight through for a scan, and they ruled out EP within an hour or so (could see the foetus in the right place, and a cyst that was causing the pain).

IMoveTheStars · 21/04/2010 16:56

sorry, that should be 7 weeks.

snala · 21/04/2010 16:57

Just caught up with this thread, am and at Charlottes treatment.

Am thinking about you hunny.xxxxxxx

Well done ladies, thank god you were around when she first posted.

Northernlurker · 21/04/2010 16:59

Clearly some people receive excellent care and some people are very lucky to get out this situation with their lives. The first outcome is the only one which is tolerable so what we need to know is why isn't that universal?
I suspect there may not be all that much clarity within the avilable research on how useful active monitoring is. By active I am meaning - a scan and a repeat scan, blood tests, admittance to hospital for observation. In order for the NHS to put money behind that sort of pathway - for it to be an absolute, unwavering standard of care - you do have to show that will improve outcomes. We also need to talk about what is an accepatable outcome - is it acceptable for a woman to preserve her life but lose a tube? Or is that in fact a partial failure of care? We know the approximate number of women who die annually but what we don't know if those women were ever seen by a doctor prior to the events which caused their death. That's important because it may not be the hospitals who need the kick up the arse - although Charlotte's clearly does - it may be US who need to know what's normal, what's dangerous and what we need to shout about?

Anyway - all that aside - Charlotte - my best wishes for an uneventful recovery

OhFuck · 21/04/2010 17:00

Thinking of you Charlotte, and hoping they get to the bottom of this and you are feeling better very soon.

I am horrified at the way this has been handled, and yes yes yes to a campaign. If it wasn't for the awareness of those MNers who have sadly been affected by EPs poor Charlotte could be none the wiser

CarGirl · 21/04/2010 17:02

Thinking of you charlotte x

queenoftheslatterns · 21/04/2010 17:03

could we send her some flowers? i remember recieving several bunches from mn when i was in hospital with my ep (incidently bullied me into insisting on a scan then too) and it made a real difference, especially since she is having such a shite time anyway!

AitchTwoZone · 21/04/2010 17:09

good idea, qos.

northern, imo and ime losing a tube is not the issue. i have had metho and later lost a tube, but my one tube was fine to `conceive my two dds.

however, the difference between a laparoscopy and an emergency laparotomy when someone is already bleeding out is enormous, from what i have read. with the laparoscopy, recovery is painful emotionally and physically, but the laparotomy is an all-out lifesaving assault on the body, wherein the priority is to keep the patient ticking rather than preserve her fertility as best as possible.
