New thread, same old plan.

We are a bunch of varying-in-size ladies (with the occassional male visitor) who all want to eat more healthily. We include those who want to lose 50 lbs, those who have already lost 50 lbs, those with only a little to lose, and some who just like to chat.

Come, post lots, and you will get encouragement, sympathy, and ass-kicking as necessary

ToccataAndFudge · 27/03/2010 15:17

can I join you.

mentioned on previous thread not trying to lose weight (And when I did lose several stone a few years ago it was because I was working nights, and absolutely sod all to do with eating healthily). but do need to put some on.

Except that's not going to happen when I'm hardly eating at all right now

MitsubishiWarrioress · 27/03/2010 15:23

Banana Jellies...

I'm with you Trill, that's just so.....wrong..

Hi Toccata.... how you doing lady? Have you got a mobile phone with an alarm and set it to remind you to have a snack of some sort? flapjack and a banana or something for energy and maybe a drink of fruit juice.

DidEinsteinsMum · 27/03/2010 15:34

As this is a healthy eating not a diet thread then of course - just as long as you arent out to rub our noses in the fact it is weight gain that you strive for.

Trills - i think is it dependant on the beer, plus also I am not sure it was a sunday dinner although 180-200 cals sound about approaching a meals worth. I did disclaimer it could be wrong. but tbh CBA.

I have eaten rice and chicken soup. but now need to sleep. My head hurts and i feel like crap.

ToccataAndFudge · 27/03/2010 15:36

god no - the only way I lost the several stone I had to lose a few years ago was by working nights.

DidEinsteinsMum · 27/03/2010 15:43

I have been in that situation when i was younger and it is crap knowing you need to put weight on. Right now stress is my friend in the weight loss department. Although I am lucky as I could afford to lose weight. Still comfortably got another stone available so will have to see what happens.

How are you doing generally toccata? we solve weight and eating by the route cause method.

I was comfort eating because of life and now i no longer feel the need as i have faced the issues i am losing. Although I am heading towards controlling food due to life again. So keep poping back to try to stop this.

MitsubishiWarrioress · 27/03/2010 15:46

Don't people focus on protein for putting weight on? And food combine sort of reverse to how people who want to lose do...so a little extra carbs and protein... cheese is good.. but still have a healthy balanced diet with fruit and veg.

DEM, sorry you are feeling so rough, if it is what I had, it is the camels testicles of a cold...

Lizzylou · 27/03/2010 15:48

Is it nearly home time, my eyes are closing???

hey Toccata

Am looking forward to going home, snuggling with my menfolk and getting an early night.

MitsubishiWarrioress · 27/03/2010 15:49

Do you get exercise Tocc? I don't mean in a way to lose more weight but maybe to stimulate your appetite? I could always eat a scabby horse after a good walk and am sure I eat more calories that I burnt of.

DidEinsteinsMum · 27/03/2010 15:49

Protein is focused on for building muscle mass as it is protein in muscle and therefore for proteint to be most beneficial in weight gain you need to exercise. Carbs are good. Good all round advice mitts - as usual.

Yep really crap and have a ton of work I should be doing but as i cant see out of my eyes straight I am going to send one email and then crash for a bit. will be back later.

ToccataAndFudge · 27/03/2010 15:55

how am I doing generally, ermm not well really.

Have just managed to drag myself to the kitchen and made a coffee, 2 slices of toast (one with cheese on top - not melted, one with marmalade) and a banana, oh and my AD.

TrillianAstra · 27/03/2010 16:06

It'd be hard to make a real meal out of 200 cals IMO. A day's woth of calories is 2000 for average woman not trying to lose weight, and no less than 1200 if you are trying to lose weight healthily.

Go have a sleep, don't worry about carbs/protein/etc. Good sleep v important to health.

OP posts:
DidEinsteinsMum · 27/03/2010 16:07

OK. so the first thing is to not beat up on yourself. Mitt's advice about a small light snack on a timer is good. A little and often will be your friend. It is easier to not worry about it too much if it doesn't seem impossible. At the moment I look at a plate of food and feel sick. but have eaten a packet of microwave rice and a 1/2 a tin of chicken soup because i mixed the to together and it was like chicken rice. and it has taken me 3 hours to eat it. Just picked.

Take one step at a time. You have just reminded me i have a prescription to drop off so must do that tomo. I am having an on strike day but as I have no ds about now for a while it is a luxary i can afford. If it is safe to do so (in terms of dcs) lock yourself in the bathroom for 5mins with a coffee or something and a mag to read. Paint you nails or something that is purely for you.

MitsubishiWarrioress · 27/03/2010 16:17

I am tired from yesterday and not doing so well on being good.....I am dreadful at eating when I am tired, DD tucked me up and read to me! Awww....
I worked really hard this morning, scrubbing, sweeping and stuff. And I went in the garden.

DidEinsteinsMum · 27/03/2010 16:26

you really put me to shame mitts.

Trills - when did the official advice become 2000 cals/day it was always 1500/day for no weight again healthy eating?

Can anyone figure out why my radio is playing silly buggers andonly working some fo the time?

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 27/03/2010 16:37

Hi all, I have not eaten yet, except a slice of malt loaf, but am going to make sure I have a very healthy dinner.

Not sure what yet but it will involve fish as I have got a ton of it to use up. Any suggestions? Nothing too labour intensive as I have already cooked a beef stew, a fish pie and a lasagne to take up to FIL's tomorrow.

Toccata, sorry you are having a rough day and DEM, hope you feel better son.

Trillian, I used to have a good recipe for a vegetable curry that was something ridiculous like 100 calories a portion. I'll see if I can track it down.

MitsubishiWarrioress · 27/03/2010 16:38

Yeah... but you is illing now DEM my lovey... I was a snotty, weepy, cry baby all week and now I have that whooooweeeee I am better joie de vivre thingy...

DidEinsteinsMum · 27/03/2010 16:42

problem is mitts i can't afford to take time off. Too much that must been done. I had a lesson i am supposed to be teaching taken off me. I am not a happy bunny.

TotalChaos · 27/03/2010 17:04

I suppose you'll just have to get as much fluid and lemsip down you as possible to get through if rest isn't entirely possible DEM.

well done for getting so much done today Mitts.

Bitter - depends what sort of fish - as if it's salmon then you can just stick it as is in oven/microwave and have with lemon juice/herbs etc. But a boring white fish may need jazzing up with tomato sauce etc...

TrillianAstra · 27/03/2010 17:13

Mmm yes please to low cal veg curry. I love curry.

Is it a normal or digital radio that's going wonky DEM? Don't know why I'm asking because I still won't be able to fix it.

Cals burnt depends obviously but Food Focus says to maintain my weight I need to eat 2,000 cals/day, that that's the average that they base everything off on the back of packets of food. So - 10 pints of beer?

By the way we have a recipe thread for any tasty healthy (or unhealthy) recipes you might want to share.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 27/03/2010 17:26

Balti Vegetable Curry

cooking spray
4 to 5 cups of vegetables(spinach, mushrooms, cauliflower, potatoes and peas,
or whatever your heart desires)
2 cups Balti Sauce
salt to taste

Heat spray in pan, add mixed vegetables and stir fry for about five minutes.
Add Balti Sauce and stir-fry until hot and bubbling. Lower heat, cover, and
simmer ten to fifteen minutes until vegetables are cooked. If sauce looks dry,
add 1/4 cup of water. Add salt to taste.

Balti Sauce

cooking spray
3 serrano peppers,roughly chopped
2 large onions, sliced
1 teaspoon garlic, minced
1 teaspoon ginger, minced
1 teaspoon tumeric
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 14 1/2 oz can chopped tomatoes
1/2 cup cilantro leaves

Heat spray in pan, add next four ingredients and stir-fry until onions are
soft. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for
twenty minutes. Let cool. Puree in blender. Sauce can be refrigerated for a
week or frozen up to two months.

That's not the original recipe, but pretty similar. I'm sure someone far more clever than me will be able to work out the calories.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 27/03/2010 17:27

Ooops, sorry, x-posts.

DidEinsteinsMum · 27/03/2010 17:34

it is a normal radio. just playing some of the time. haven't blown speaker, transmission shouldnt be a problem. Just temperally.

I was sure the WHO/govt recommended intake was 1500 cals. hmmm interesting. might google as will be a relevant side line. Doing helth with yr8 soon.

Wordsonascreen · 27/03/2010 17:35

cilantro leaves?

Do Sainsburys do them? (if not I'm lost)

DidEinsteinsMum · 27/03/2010 17:42

right my memory isnt completely screwballed.

Calorie Intake per Day
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the lowest recommended calorie level (except under doctor supervision) is 1200 calories a day, although 1400-1500 calories is preferable.

As a rough guide don't allow your calorie level to fall below your basal metabolic rate (BMR) - the number of calories your body expends by doing nothing. An average basal metabolic rate for many women is about 1500 calories a day.

In an ideal world it is the basal metabolic rate that i am remembering not the calorie recommendation. To me the bm is more important as it is the actual rnergy requirement of the body. Happy now that i know i am not so mad.
