Thankyou PP - just wondering about the whole other recombining thing now!

pofacedandproud · 08/08/2009 17:46

The squalene worries me PretaParfait - if you get to know any more about it do post here

Perfait - Tis Baxter doing our vaccine as well as GSK (was probably a typo ) Baxter are creating cell-based vaccines.

I'm not sure its true that most vaccines have an adjuvant (I believe thiomersal is a preservative) The US do not use adjuvants in their flu jabs and are looking to use emergency powers in order to do so this year for the first time.

(am also a science/engineering background)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/08/2009 18:02

lol sorry, tried to shorten your name and ballsed it up. Been a very long day and have only had half a sarnie since breakfast.

all of mine had confirmed cases of it, back when they were still swabbing for it.

there's no way i'd permit them to have this vaccine.

Gotte · 08/08/2009 18:38

Stuffitlama

I'm sorry, I can;t help but bite.

You seem to be confusing glibness with having an opinion.

An opinion, I hasten to add, that is backed up by the scientific community.

Point me in the direction to anything concrete that suggests Wakefield's research concerning MMR was not deeply flawed, then I'll take it back.

Oh, and as for him being made fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, well, I would have settled for him being a paediatrician.

I'll be interested to see the result of the GMC investigation into his alleged misconduct and rigging of data to back up his theories. I believe it's due to end sometime this month.

Should make for a good read.

stuffitlllama · 08/08/2009 18:57

Let it lie Gotte.

Am trying to join the debate but my power keeps flickering.

Interesting link parfait.. I jumped to the end, was this the idea.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 08/08/2009 19:02

I;d like to see something that shows Wakefield's study was deeply flawed Gotte. Horton (editor of the Lancet) at the GMC trial said under oath that the original paper was an excellent example of a case series and that it still stands. Nothing published to date has addressed the Wakefield et al paper as nothing has tested his hypothesis.

The papers showing that MMR is not responsible for the rise in autism rates are neither here nor there as that is not Wakefield's hypothesis and pretty irrelevant to it.

Agree completely btw that this a discussion for a different thread and will happily stop commenting when there's nothing to correct.

pofacedandproud · 08/08/2009 19:02

Gotte there are plenty of MMR threads where this has all been thrashed out [with all the proper links to back up arguments before. Not getting at you but it is a very, very, difficult subject on MN.

Right, can anyone tell me anything about SQUALENE?

pofacedandproud · 08/08/2009 19:03

x posts saintly.

Gotte · 08/08/2009 19:08

I'll migrate to a suitable MMR thread and pick it up there.

Sorry to have bitten again, Lama's tone just got my back up.

All the best.

pagwatch · 08/08/2009 19:10

There are MMR threads in vaccination topic area which is very helpful as it means I don't have to see them !!!!

stuffitlllama · 08/08/2009 19:13

Apparently the WHO has recommended that adjuvants be used in swine flu vaccines to increase the global supply.

GSK who have orders for vaccines from around the world, including the UK, have tested squalene (AS03) in a flu vaccine for a different strain, H5N1. [[http://www.themacraegroup.com/2009-symposia/xi-international-symposium-on-respiratory-viral-infect ions/oral-abstracts/safety-and-immunogenicity-of-an-as03-adjuvanted-h5n1-prepandemic-influenza-vacci ne-2013a-phase-iii-study-in-thai-population here]

However there's little testing of how adjuvants affect pregnant women and children, obviously thought to be the most vulnerable groups.

But as adjuvants are not "essential" I believe (not from a scientific background) ie they are supposed to boost the immune response and stretch supply rather than actually "do the job", then they could produce one without the adjuvants for those groups. Some reports say this could happen.

I'm annoyed we didn't get swine flu before winter (it was at the kids' school, it was at both dh and my workplace and both dh and I travel on trains and tubes and we still didn't bloody get it grrr) because getting it when it's cold means the asthma ones in our family are more likely to suffer.

And of course, they are the ones who won't be able to have the vaccine too grrrr!

stuffitlllama · 08/08/2009 19:16

please, please, this time

stuffitlllama · 08/08/2009 19:17

ha
any problem with your links just come to me

whomovedmychocolate · 08/08/2009 19:17

Are there any swine flu suffers currently on Mumsnet willing to lick Foxinsocks and family for the greater good?

stuffitlllama · 08/08/2009 19:20

and this is about its use/testing by Novartis, GSK etc but I haven't had time to read it my self yet.. it's WHO

foxinsocks · 08/08/2009 19:26

lol whomoved

I just don't want them getting any hideous chest infections and it sounds like quite a chesty flu

maybe I should just get them vaccinated anyway and hope the egg reaction isn't too severe!

pofacedandproud · 08/08/2009 19:31

'Anti-squalene antibodies (claimed
association with 'gulf-war syndrome')
? Addressed by GACVS (July 2006)
? The Committee concurred that fears of squalene in vaccineinducing
pathological anti-squalene antibodies are unfounded. It
did note, however, that the experience of squalene-containing
vaccines has been primarily in older age-groups and
recommended that as squalene-containing vaccines are
introduced in other age-groups, careful post-marketing follow up
to detect any vaccine-related adverse events needs to be
performed.
? WHO Weekly Epidemiological Record on 14 July 2006'

Doesn't fill me with confidence!

How can anyone make such a decision re the swine flu vaccine without knowing about it. I make all decisions for my children based on facts and reasons. To some respects you have to have trust but fact backed trust I think.

I think I'll be waiting to see what actually happens before making any firm choices here.
