Wake Pea Up Before you Goji - 10/10 thread

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Birds ate our first few ripe strawberries over the weekend. I've put net over them now.

I think I saw that programme ages ago Guad. Were the raw children HE'd? I remember the little chap saying 'we know some vegetarians and vegans but no-one else is raw'.

Had an excellent F&V day yesterday. Packed it all in before my indian and managed at least 1 portion and lots of chocolate and sweets. Tried a new one which was nice but very lurid colours. Does anyone know why? Might start a thread actually.

No so much f&v today. We went to a party. DS won pass the parcel

Welcome Flappy. DH was in the Navy pre-DC. Was hard enough being on my own for months so admire you doing it with DC

Molly, you sound really down

FrayedKnot · 20/06/2009 16:08

Oh Moll, how can we cheer you up?

It's horrible when you feel like you have nothing to look forward to.

SuperBunny · 20/06/2009 18:09

Guad, they're not imaginary orchids! You said so yourself!

Sorry you are feeling blue molly. Being skint is shit. Can you go and sit on your boat for a bit?

FlappyTheBat · 20/06/2009 18:23

ok, breakfast - orange juice, banana and blueberries
lunch - bacon roll,
eve meal - broccoli, carrots, peas, strawberries ( had more blueberries but they don't count)

please bully me as I know exactly what I need to eat but......

plan on having a chili tomorrow, no meat and just beans, peppers, tomatoes.

What nuts would people suggest? Only ever eat chocolate at work, so need something that will satisfy my chocolate craving that I always get in the afternoon, thought nuts might be a healthier alternative?

thanks for the welcomes too

SuperBunny · 20/06/2009 18:28

Why don't more blueberries count flappy?

Nuts have a lot of fat but are a good source of protein. I think peanuts are generaly the least nutritious (but still better than chocolate).

FlappyTheBat · 20/06/2009 18:32

Thought to count as a portion, it had to be a different fruit or veg?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 20/06/2009 18:33

Baby Lemur is on a mission to make my head explode today. Everything I do is WRONG.

Anyway, it is now bathtime and bedtime is looming - hurrah!

Flappy, how about also adding onion and mushrooms to your chilli? How about having it with brown rice. I tried it again a few months ago and actually liked it (even though it does take 30 mins to cook!)

Brazil nuts and almonds are v good for you, can't remember why though as are seeds, but remember they don't count towards your 10. And if you ask why not, you will be thrown in the pit. Oh yes.

How about a local campsite Moll? Or does the budget not stretch to it? Can you sell anything on EBay to get some funds together?

Have champagne (well any fizzy white stuff) and chocs waiting for your husband when he returns and guilt embarrass him into doing something for your anniv.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 20/06/2009 18:34

A second portion of the same fruit or veg count, but not juice.

SuperBunny · 20/06/2009 18:52

or pulses

FlappyTheBat · 20/06/2009 18:55

Mushrooms and I do not get along at all, but forgot to include onions as so used to adding them to my chilli.

Only eat brown rice, changed to brown as it didn't clump together in one gelatinous mess like white, not for any health benefits

Will try nakd bars I think when I'm at work.

Thanks ILikeToMoveIt, oh well, 8 portions not too bad then for starters, really don't know what I'll do when summer is over, will miss my berries!

littlerach · 20/06/2009 19:50

Flappy, 8 is fab, muxh better than I usually get

Can add pear
more cherries

So crap.

SuperBunny · 20/06/2009 20:02

Everyone is putting me to shame. I am barely managing 5 a day

FrannyandZooey · 20/06/2009 20:12

as we are doing 10, i count it if i have 2 portions of pulses
not juice though

anyway
go pointy go pointy
what a storming start
i am waiting to hear the rest

flappy good going

LOL at pinkspottybootees winning pass the parcel

i didn't see the orchids but i forgot to look
it was jolly nice and the best bit was the whopping big slide with the funny acoustics, so you could hear people speaking quietly at the top without them knowing it
i said to dp thank god i hadn't gone up to try it as i would have been saying "this is too high i am shitscared" and a load of littlies down the bottom

the journey there was horrendous! i think i got mild food poisoning off lunch at soft play yesterday so i was sitting in the back trying not to be ill, with ds2 crying and chucking every toy i passed to him, then dp got lost (we ALWAYS get lost) and ds1 started rabbiting nervously "are we lost daddy? please don't get lost. why are we lost daddy? we get lost a lot don't we? how many times have you gone the wrong way and got lost?"
LOL
but it was a super day and the kids were lovely and you know sometimes they all decide they want to be your best friend and only be pushed on the swing by you and stand in the ice cream queue with you
it is so gratifying in an egotistical way
my friend's little dd kept asking to drink out of MY drink bottle but then asking me confidingly "don't you have one with a PINK lid?"
LOL

FrannyandZooey · 20/06/2009 20:16

oh 100 good you are here, so did you come up with any revelations? i agree what we do on MN is revealing
i told the lovely counsellor i had about 10 / 10 once
i said "well i kind of go on the internet and talk to people and i have this thread where i pretend i am in charge and we all have to eat lots of fruit and vegetables"
poor woman i don't know how she kept a straight face
she must have gone home and hooted

the thread is quite busy and i only type slowly with ds2 on me
i worry i am missing people
i am not ignoring anyone just a bit crap

FrannyandZooey · 20/06/2009 20:19

strawberries
apple
banana
raisins
mange tout (x 2)
hummus
apple
apple
banana

phew scraped 10 with quite a few apples in there
must eat more veg tomorrow - was a picnicky day though, we didn't have what you would call a meal

lots of walking - lovely and springy under the pine trees
so quiet and fresh there - wish we lived nearer

FrayedKnot · 20/06/2009 20:23

Bunny it can;t be easy at the moment to concentrate on f&v. How's things anyway? Any more certain yet?

DS made me buy a fresh pineapple

He doesn;t like it

It's mine all mine

SuperBunny · 20/06/2009 20:32

Day sounds lovely, Franny.

I'll share pineapple with FK's DS

New Big Day: Thursday. If it is postponed again, I shall cry. A lot. I am about to post my couch and comfy chair on craiglist so I will be furniture-less.

pointydog · 20/06/2009 20:43

sultanas
dreid apricots
grapefruit juice
pineapple, loads (let's say 2)
beetroot, loads nearly half a jar (1.5?)
BIG greek salad (red pepper, cucumber, tomato, spring onion, olives) - an easy 3
gooseberry fool - wonder if that would count for 0.5? Maybe if you add teh tinned tomatoes in my left over mince?

I'd say I've got to 10

pointydog · 20/06/2009 20:45

I nearly bought a pineapple today, knot. Dd2 won the pineapple we ate this morning, although she's the only one who doesn;t like it.

pointydog · 20/06/2009 20:45

went for a walk as well and cleared a load of rubbish in teh woods

FrayedKnot · 20/06/2009 20:53

I like the idea of a pineapple for a prize, pointy.

Was it like a pineapple shy or something?

SB {{{{}}}}

Them's pineapple-top hugs

pointydog · 20/06/2009 20:55

not a shy, she had to make a leaflet on healthy eating or healthy lifestyle for Guides. Sh ewon and came home carrying pineapple aloft.

pointydog · 20/06/2009 20:55

bunny, do you mean you are coming to the UK on Thurs?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 20/06/2009 20:55

blueberries
banana
dried cranberries
sultanas
pineapple
bean salad
strawberries
mushrooms
veg curry

The people out the back are having a bbq and are v loud. And guess which part of the house Baby Lemur's nursery is? Yes, you've guessed it, the back. Gaaahhhhhhhh

lol at telling the counsellor. When I first told dh what this thread is about and what goes on he did give me a look. But, he has also upped his f&v intake!

SuperBunny · 20/06/2009 21:08

No Pointy but on Thursday everything should be settled and definite. I still don't have any signed paperwork and without it, I can't take DS out of the country. So, roll on Thursday.
