Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure I can blame one of my legs being longer as the cuplrit - as this time it is on the other leg from the one I had previosuly had problems with!

But I do wonder if it is relevant that I managed to train for a marathon (for which I did a decent training mileage, and completed in 3hr 56) without problem - when I used a pair of sorbothan insoles, and it has been since I stopped using the insoles, I have had the problems. It could have been their impact abosrbancy - or could be as simple as the fact that the insoles raised my foot a couple of millimetres and stopped the heel of my Asics damaging my achilles.

Prettybird · 12/09/2005 12:35

Gizmo - how was the Grunty fell 1/2m? Did you manage it, despite your injuires?

This board is very quiet at the moment. How is everyone doing? I'm still on enforced rest, but I want to keep the motivation going, so once my leg is better, I will get back out running again

Gizmo · 12/09/2005 14:41

Sorry, I've been sulking - hence the lack of posts. My motivation took a bit of a battering due to my unexplained leg pain, which kept moving around in a most mysterious and aggravating way. The only constant was a deep seated ache in the buttock and around the hip joint, which gave my self diagnosis of a hamstring problem. Despite having seen both a doctor and sports masseur last week I'm no better informed as they also find it difficult to diagnose a moving target.

Anyway, on the bright side, the two weeks of rest reduced the ache sufficiently to allow me to run on Sunday. I'd promised the doctor I'd run it at a controlled pace but got a bit carried away and now have a new half marathon PB of 1:46:46 and a need to avoid my GP for a while .

The thing that makes me very happy, though, is the state of my legs this morning. Usual post race soreness, but nothing really significant in the hamstring, shins or quads area. I shall have to wait for a couple of days, but maybe the two weeks off was all that was needed and I am fixed!

I live in hope.....

Congratultations Gizmo - that's a good pb! (I think mine was about that - can't remember exactly, as it was about 15 years ago!). Glad to hear that you are not feeling too bad. Could the problem be in an underdeveloped glut muscle? Your symptom reminded me of a problem that dh had, and when a physio friend (the one who lives near Beverely, who we might and go and see if we do the Brass Monkey 1/2M) had a look at him and said one of his glut muscles was underdeveloped and causing an imbalance.

What's your analysis of my achilles problem and the fact that it has migrated from one leg to the other?

I know I should go and see my GP - but I know that most GPs plead ignorance about soft tissue injuries and suggest that you see a physio, and as I am no longer a member of a gym, I don't know where to go to find one.

Gizmo · 12/09/2005 16:04

Bit baffled by the achilles thing, PB, I have to say, although my best guess would simply be that something about your running style predisposes you to achilles injuries and which side they occur on is random. Were you wearing insoles last week?

I know what you mean about GPs and I was quite surprised that mine was prepared to hazard a guess about whether I would be OK at Grunty Fen. However, I would expect someone in your GP's surgery to be able to recommend a local sports physio: you can't be the only sportsperson in their practise, can you?

You might be spot on with the glut muscle thing: this autumn is the first time I have been doing work that has consistently left me with a tired bum, so I probably haven't been using my glutes properly up to now. If the problem reoccurs then I shall suggest it to a sports physio.

By the way, for anyone who is interested in the Brass Monkey half (I think that's you and Beetroot, so far), the entry forms are on the Knavesmire Harriers website now, and I'd recommed getting one filled out and in the post within the next 2 weeks if you want to do it: it's a popular race that normally sells out very quickly.

Gizmo · 12/09/2005 16:04

How are your legs this week, btw?

Prettybird · 12/09/2005 17:09

I'll talk to dh tonight about the Brass Monkey 1/2M- I knew the entry opened today. Dh thinks he has run it - 12 years ago, just before he and I got together.

I do need to try and see a proper physio before I atrempt to self diagnose. I wasn't wearing special insoles during the run. But before I go off and get some sorbothane insoles, it might just be coincidence that I didn't have problems when I did long distance training when I had them last.

Apart from my heel, my legs feel fine. I'm still limping a wee bit, and can't go up and down stairs properly - or push off strongly on my bike (awkward at traffic lights). It reminds me in no uncertain terms that there is no strength in it whatsoever - ouch! I need to try to do some stretches now - but be careful to move in to the stretch slowly.

fionagib · 12/09/2005 22:32

congrats on your fantastic pb gizmo!
My dd is in f/t school now so will manage to get out some mornings before work, tried today (ran/jogged/staggered for 30 mins) but body felt like lead.

merrygoround · 12/09/2005 22:42

Haven't posted on here for ages as when I see the huge number of posts I feel that I will never catch up. But I wondered if anyone would be interested in starting a kind of email running buddy system, where people can maybe pair up outside of this thread and keep in touch by email to motivate and support eachother? (Sorry if it's been suggested/done - as I say, I can't keep up with this thread). I was thinking that people could pair up with someone at a similar level - for example I am not interested in races but am desperate to find a way to increase the number of times I run per week so that I can up my time/distance.

I won't be offended if people think this is unworkable or not a good idea! But please let me know if anyone thinks there may be mileage in the suggestion (no pun intended).

fionagib · 13/09/2005 10:25

I really like your idea merrygoround. I love this thread as it's great to keep in touch with people of all levels, but a pairing up idea would be brilliant too (God knows I need motivating at the moment! Am willing to try ANYTHING)

My level is: have run 5 10k races over past 2 years. pb was 59 mins in women's 10k (Glasgow) in may. I would like to run a half marathon but being realsitic I think 10k is prob my limit. It's a distance I find challenging but achievable. I love races.

When I'm 'in the swing' I go for around 3-4 40 min runs per week but at present (due to virtually no training in summer months)can't manage anything like it & have body of lead.

Anyone like to be my buddy?

Gizmo · 13/09/2005 12:17

I think this is a really good idea, too, judging by the number of people who 'pop in' to this thread but struggle to get past that difficult 2 week barrier. Some one to one assistance might be really useful, a bit like having a virtual running partner.

Arabica · 13/09/2005 12:29

I also think it's a good idea: I'm finding it quite easy to be motivated at the moment as I have a 5km race coming up on Sunday (eeeeeek) but haven't got anything planned after that & may struggle to get out when the weather gets rough! So, I need someone who's a beginner but not a complete beginner IYSWIM! Failing that another race to sign up for in 6-8 wks time.

Arabica · 13/09/2005 12:31

Anyone know of any 5km (or roundabout that distance) races suitable for beginners, in London, from mid-Oct to Xmas? Nothing on RW website except the Serpentine runs which sound like they are for people who can run under 30 min (which will be me next year!)

merrygoround · 13/09/2005 13:25

Yes, a virtual running partner, that's what I need. I need someone who perhaps only runs twice a week, who is aiming to run for up to an hour, who is interested in some of the diet related stuff, and maybe in a kind of holistic approach to fitness that might include other exercise too.

hatstand · 13/09/2005 21:11

this thread has got very long! I have a rl running partner at the moment - we don;t actually run together - live too far apart but text each other our times etc - it definitely helps. We've entered the same race - Kingston running fesitival in October - 8 miles. I am quite chuffed with my progress - doing 4 mile runs now without feel hideous. Anyone else doing this race?

Arabica · 13/09/2005 21:50

Not up to that standard yet hatstand--maybe next year...

fionagib · 14/09/2005 10:52

managed 30 mins this morning, was lovely way to start the day...

Arabica · 14/09/2005 12:25

me too! Did 15 min run, 1 min walk, 15 min more run. I've never managed 30 mins before--really looking forward to my 5km on Sunday now: just one more run to go before then.
There's a very tempting-looking run on new year's day in Hyde Park. It's a 10km though. Do y'all think I've got enough time between Sunday (when I will run 5km) and end Dec to train for a 10km bearing in mind vvvv slow pace & injury prone-ness??

Gizmo · 14/09/2005 15:57

Yes Arabica, I'd think you could, even allowing for a couple of weeks out with something or other. It should let you build up the extra mileage nice and slow.

I'm all Fionagib, it's a nice day here but work is going mental and showing no signs of slowing up for the next couple of weeks, so no chance of making the most of the weather.

Everywhere I go there are adverts for the GNR at the moment, so where's our team GNR? Beety, Twink, how's it going? Tapering well?

Leogaela · 15/09/2005 09:21

Hello runners,
A cheeky question - does anyone subscribe to runner's world? I don't live in teh UK so don't want subscribe but want the marathon schedules from their website, you can't get them anymore if you don't subscribe.
Thank you !

Gizmo · 15/09/2005 09:23

Leogaela

I subscribe. Which schedule are you after? CAT me and I'll forward it to you.

Leogaela · 15/09/2005 09:37

Thanks Gizmo!

Arabica · 15/09/2005 13:58

Subscriber content on runnersworld website is currently 'unlocked', ie anyone can view--I just accessed the get-you-round marathon schedule (and started thinking...could I?????)
