Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would love to do a half marathon one day, but 5km is far enough at the mo! I don't want to get injured again, so am taking things VERY slowly and following my beginners programme to the letter.

Prettybird · 05/09/2005 14:21

5km is still an achievement - and you are very right not to push it and risk getting injured again. (says I, hobbling around the office! ) Think of it as keeping you body young, so that you are in the best condition to ttc (and then to stay young, to keep up with the resultant sproglet) - that's what I am doing!

Fionagib - glad you've managed to get out and that you enjoyed yourslef. Here's to us all keeing our momentum going through the autumn and winter!

Gizmo - I talked to dh about the Brass Monkey Half and he was quite interested. Only problem is that he might be away as part of his wine course - but as he said, it doesn't stop me coming down!

Prettybird, a rather belated well done. I thought of you on Saturday and was praying that you didn't have heat+humidity, you must have melted!

How is your achilles feeling today? I'm sure your quads will recover, given time (are you going up and down stairs sideways?) but achilles sounds ouch....better teach DH to give sports massage, I think. Alternatively, there's always the 'sit in a bath of iced water' approach, although I think using the iced water to chill the Cava is a much better idea.

My achilles is very sore today - and has absolutely zero strength. Little things like putting your knickers on (when you have balance momenartarily on one foot) hurt.

Going down stairs is a case of holding on tight to the bannister (or the wall - we haven't put the bannister back in the lower part of our stariway since we re-decorated) and "hopping" my bad leg forward, keeping it as straight as possible. The quads just have to complain (both quads are sore today) - but that's just "ordinary" pain!

Why do we do it?!

The worst thing about the heat was that they had drinks stations at after 2 miles and at 4.5 miles - and then nothing until 9.5 miles (and another one at 11.5). Especially in yesterdays' hot humid conditions, that is positively dangerous - and no wonder I saw a lot of (serious looking) casualties.

Thnak goodness for the Sikh and Muslim communities, who had put on an unofficial drinks station at about 8.5 miles - plus the "shower" that they were running with hoses. And thanaks also to the lady who gave a slurp of her drank at about 8 miles, when I despaired out loud about the lack of drinks stations.

Sorry Beetroot - I don't kow of any on-line specialist shops. I need to get more gear myself - I'm running in shorts and a vest that I got 6 years ago in Boston, and running tights that I bought for the London Marathon which I ran in 1992!

Twink · 05/09/2005 18:35

Well done Prettybird, I was thinking of you all the way through my 8 miler, the thought of you having to get through a half in that heat kept me going when I wanted to quit, thanks !

Love the idea of putting chilled bubbly in the kit bag.

These are local to me and are usually around at all the big races, GNR, FLM etc.

When I have done my 5km race I am treating myself to a posh running top from Sweaty Betty I don't know if their stuff is actually any good or even available in my size, but I love the name!

Arabica · 05/09/2005 19:57

Just looked on Girls Run Too and love their stuff too. Great incentive to get to size 12.
Prettybird, how old's your little one--are you an older mum too? My DS is 5 in April.

Which shop did you order them from?

Prettybird · 06/09/2005 09:05

Arabica - ds is 5 on Saturday, and started school a few weeks ago. Would still like a sister or brother for him - but time is running out.

Glad I "helped" you round your 8 miler Twink!

I can see that there will be a few bottles of chilled bubbly going in to the kit bags of mumsnetters! Tip: use a champagne rapid ice (the bottle sleeves you put into the freezer to cool it down quickly); it will keep the bubbly cold for long enough!

fionagib · 06/09/2005 11:05

well done twink

You are inspiring people! am hoping to get started on new run day/rest day routine, so will get out tomorow even if it's in pitch black.

Prettybird, snap in every respect! DS 5 in April.

Prettybird · 06/09/2005 14:28

Arabica - I knew we had a lot in common as I had seen you on the ttc board. I also had a miscarriage about 2 years ago.

Arabica · 06/09/2005 22:55

Was on post-miscarriage board but we still haven't decided whether we're ttc. That's what running's about for me, to help get as fit as possible so I am in best condition to cope with pregnancy if we do decide to go for it. But now I am hooked on idea of being able to run for its own sake. Just 4 more runs then it's my 5km!

Prettybird · 07/09/2005 08:59

Good luck Arabica, whatever you decide.

It was on the Conception Board I first "noticed" you, when you were debating if you were silly to be broody at 40+, as I could really identify with you!

And good luck with your next few runs and the 5k race! I'm sure you will do brilliantly!

Arabica · 08/09/2005 13:44

Anyone running today? Or am I the only melting nutter? It's boiling here in London but if I don't go now I risk not being able to run at all today as DS will be back late. Got to do 12 mins x 2, then run for 5.
How's everyone else?

potty1 · 08/09/2005 14:42

Arabica - I'm going out later. It's lovely running weather here, not cold but a bit drizzly.

Prettybird · 08/09/2005 15:01

It's such a shame....... I can't go out running, and don't need to feel guilty as I am resting my poor damaged achilles .

Actually, it's getting better quite nicely - hopefully, I iwll only have to take 2 weeks off - but I'll have to see how it feels.

Good luck to everyone due a run!

potty1 · 08/09/2005 16:52

PB - much sympathy to a fellow achilles sufferer, mine has thankfully improved quite a bit recently. I went along for some physio on a shoulder injury and she had a look at it for me. She thinks I have one leg a bit longer than the other and suggested I wear quite a thick gel insole in the shoe on the short side, which is th one I have a problem with. I could get an appointment with the podiatrist for some specialist insoles but I'm happy with it at the moment.
