Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

SOrry about your friend's car. What happened?

Give me a call on your way up. I can give you my race number. Maybe we can meet up outside Nithsdale Road Nursery, which is probably about where the "yellows" will be congregating.

Having finally read the Race Booklet, I've now found out about the mass warm up at 9.30. I suspect I won't go to it - my warm up will be getting along there from home!

fionagib · 13/05/2005 21:45

Sounds like a good plan pb.

Some one rammed into my friend at a roundabout, not her fault & she's fine but pain in the rear about her car, poor thing.

And am feeling throaty and glandy and not too well - have been working like a nut lately and think it's all caught up with me - but am hoping it turns out to be nothing and that I'll be raring to go on Sunday!

Thanks for your kind words, gizmo! After your marathon performance it seems a bit tiddly! xx

Prettybird · 15/05/2005 00:43

In case you check this Fionagib - I don't have your phone number, so I am relying on you ringing me or somehow meeting up beforehand. Stupid me uses my work e-mial - and I left my PC at work witohut taking a note of your number! .

My number is 4302 and if I don't hear from you, I'll be outside Nithsdale Road Nursery aroun 9.45.

fionagib · 15/05/2005 21:01

sorry to have missed you pb! I got 'trapped' by the yellow balloons and wasn't sure where the nursery was - also thought I'd at least start off with one friend I know locally but as it was, it was so crowded that we lost each other within minutes of trying to find ourselves space to run.

It was a lovely course I thought, glorious sunny day too (have sunburnt face) - think I managed 59 mins which I was really chuffed with. Pb your result is fantastic, bet you're delighted. Post it on here - quick!!

Glasgow women's 10k is a great course, brilliant atmosphere - loads of people cheering - any others on here who could make it, I'd really recommend it for next year.

Twink · 15/05/2005 22:06

Fiona ! Excellent ! Take a moment to yourself & look at what you've achieved over the last few months, well done that non-smoking runner

How can we wait until PB gets to work now you've mentioned it - not fair !!! (I'm not able to Mumsnet while I'm working )

Well done PB for your fab but undisclosed time

Prettybird · 15/05/2005 22:35

Well you don't have to wait until I get to work as for once I have sneaked on to the home computer.

Did 57 min and c.50 seconds! (had a wee problem with setting my watch at the start, so won't know the exact time until I get my "chip" time).

My achilles tendon stood up - but my right big toe nail did not . It's a sore greyish colour, so I suspect I will lose it. Just what you want at the beginning of summer!

Still, it means that I can justify going and getting an new pair of running shoes. Not that I really need to, as this pair are 6 years old and to be fair, I think the porblem with my toe nail was more to do with the fact that I had forgotten to cut it

It was a lovely day - the SOuth Side of Glasgow looked beautiful in the sun, with all the azaleas, rhodedeondrons and bluebulls in full bloom. But I would say that, as I live on the course!

I should have gone to the warm up - the course was so crowded that I had to do lots of side steps, trying to find my way past slower runners - using muscles I never normally use in running in a straight line! I also wasn't able to run my normal even pace as I often had to sprint to get through wee "holes" in the throng.

It was also so crowded that I missed seeing dh and ds and my parents at the 1k mark - and becasue they then waited til everyne had passed (28 minutes) to try to see me, they never got to the second place they were going to support me. Didn't help that they were standing on the wrong side of the course than the one we had agreed - so I was scanning all the faces on the right hand side, having moved across to be close to that kerb - and they were standing on the left hand side . But I did see them on the finishing straight

But I am already looking forward to my next race! Still to decide which one it will be - there are a few 5 and 10k races coming up.

And I will run the Great Scottish Run on 4 September - and next time fionagib and I will succeed in meeting up!

Gizmo · 16/05/2005 09:34

Oh that's great, both of you, congratulations. I hope you're pleased - I am . I hope your husband was suitably complimentary, Prettybird ?

It was a beautiful day down here, and I almost envied those of you racing. Obviously it was inspiring though - Fiona, that's one hell of an improvement in one week, isn't it? If you squeeze another 10k in next week does that take you down to 55 minutes?

Anyway, I've just realised we haven't put the race list up on this thread, so here goes:

Twink, Gizmo Reading Half Marathon, 6th March - done

Feel free to add/delete/correct, as ever. What's next for the Glasgow 10K brigade? If we were to consider a mumsnet race meet up where would the best area be: something in the yorkshire/north of england, perhaps?

Prettybird · 16/05/2005 09:55

Dh was suitably pleased for me !

You've missed out fionagib as having done the Glasgow 10k. Put me down for the Great Scottish Run (the Scottish Half Marathon) on 4 September. I'm suitably inspired now.

I've still to decide which of the 10ks coming up I'll do - there are a few in the West of Scotland in June to choose from. I'll let you know when I've decided.

Yorkshire/Manchester/North England area would be good for me for a "meet-up" run - as long as you don't mind dh coming along!

fionagib · 16/05/2005 10:20

WELL DONE THAT SPEEDY LADY PRETTYBIRD!! And so sorry to hear about your poor toe...

Thanks for kind comments gizmo & twink, definitely feel more proud of this time than I have before (erk, very bad sentence there!) And yes Twink, thankfully the ciggies seems like a long time ago now. It's either running or fags for me - can't do both - and now there's no contest.

Chip times not on website yet, prob later today d'you think pb? If you get the newspaper (I won't be able to) would you mind checking my time? It'll be under Doak, my married name.

My next race edin marathon relay (a 4 mile chunk) in 3 weeks I think.

Prettybird · 16/05/2005 10:29

I've realised I haven't congratulated YOU fionagib! You've broken the hour now! Now there will be no stopping you! And glad to hear that the ciggies are now history

I've worked out that I ran this 10k at about the same pace that I ran my first ever half marathon, 18 years ago. So I am even more pleased with myself If I can keep going, I will get the pace back in my legs!

My toe nail is still sore - don't think I will be able to wear the pretty new (expensive ) LK Bennet shoes that I bought on Saturday when I go down to London tomorrow on business. Not sure I can wear any of my "work" shoes! - but I'll work something out

Prettybird · 16/05/2005 10:31

Oops - and meant to say I will try and get an Evening Times this afternoon and will post your time. Would you like me to send you a copy?

Prettybird · 16/05/2005 11:38

Good luck to you Gizmo for next Saturday.

Judging by the list, this will be your first race since your (brilliant) Paris Marathon. Your legs (and mind) just be just aobut ready and raring to go again.

coldtea · 16/05/2005 13:14

Thank-you for including me on the list, the gsr is in october, sorry for being a pain!

Am also after a bit of your excellent advice! Most advice i've read seems suggest running a min of 3 times/week when training, but my legs really struggle with this. Sometimes they can need as many as 4 days off as walking is such an effort!
I'm not as fit as i was last year when i ran the gnr but the problem was the same then. Is it something i'm doing wrong that causes this?

Prettybird · 16/05/2005 13:22

Have you got decent shoes? Are they the right "type" for your running style?

If you are still having problems, then you are probably trying to do too much too soon. try cutting back on the time you are out, or alternating in more walking into the running (I can't talk, I have a "rule" about never walking).

I would still recommend trying to get out at least 3 times a week - even if it just for a short time each time and then gradually building it up. You've got the time to do it!

coldtea · 16/05/2005 13:37

I went to a proper running shop last year & spent £110 on asics so i don't think it's the shoes. It's probably a case of too much too soon. I'm one of these people who if i want to run for 1/2 hour, i'll do 35mins! I just don't seem to be able to get it together for this run though.

Last year i didn't know if i could complete the gnr as i hadn't run since school(& that was doing the 800m!) so i was frightened to miss a run. This year because the gsr is 3 miles shorter i know i can run it, so i feel a bit cocky thinking i can skip sessions. Then after skipping a session i think i'll make up for it by going twice the distance the next time i go out.

I think i really need a programme to follow! I'm all over the place!

fionagib · 16/05/2005 13:39

When d'you folks think it's okay to go out for a run after a 10k (am feeling slightly achy - tho can't complain when pb has a poorly toe - are you gonna be able to run on it pb?)

D'you think it's wisest to have a couple of rest days after a race? Thanks xx

Prettybird · 16/05/2005 14:07

It's actually good (and you won't want me to say this!) to go out for a short, sloooow run today jus to loosen off your muscles.

But if you want to rest, then I'm sure you'll be able to come up with some appropriate excsues

Having said that, the earliest I'll be able to get out is Thursday (if then) as I've got a Pilates class tonight (re-scheduled from Wednesday, but the stretching will probably do me good), and then I'm down to London on the 6am flight tomorrow and back on Wednesday on the last easyjet flight, only getting in after 10 (and then dh - who is also down in London - have to go and pick up ds from my SIL)

My toe feels ok in my trainers - now that I have cut the offending toe nail! it's just the pointy toed kitten heels that are a problem

Prettybird · 16/05/2005 16:00

Well, fb - according to the Evening Times, you did 59min and 47s - so you did break the hour

I did 57 min 53 sec officially.

It's done by time in the Evening Time supplement, so I had to scan through 4 columns of names to find you!

Both the herald and the Eveing Times comment about the lady at the 8k mark who was stadning on the bench screaming "it's all downhill from here"! She really was very motivating (plus I knew what she said was true ) - and I loved the fact that she had a c.6 month old baby on her hip! Coulnd't understadn why as we apporached 8k there was lots of cheering - she was the reason!

Anyway, congratulations on breaking the hour. Next goal is to break 9 and 1/2 minute miles! . Mine is to break 9 minute miles -

Potty1 · 16/05/2005 16:10

Well done you two sounds like you both had a good day.

Pretty bird - when you find out how to break the 9 min mile mark let me know. On this weekends run my first mile was an appalling 11 mins 20 secs - my mum could have done better on her new hip.

mancmum · 16/05/2005 16:12

I am doing RFL in July - can you put me down to make it look serious to me!! Getting better thanks to all the advice on here... just want to be able to run 10K NOW and not struggle from lamp post to lamp post..!!

Prettybird · 16/05/2005 16:33

My first mile is always slow - don't worry about it! I look on it as my "warm up" mile! (..or two!) I never do stretches before a run - I just start off slowly. I do now stretch after a run - a cncession to my advancing years.

Gizim has given some good advice as to hwo to increase your pace. personally, I hate going into the anaerobic zone - it's too much like hurting - but when I was running seriously (a loooong time ago) I owuld do the occasional bit of pshing - with a mixed run (eg running fast for a few lampposts, then jogging etc) or doing a whole (shorter) run at a slightly increased pace. I also did a wee bit of hill training. It did gradually have an effect - even though I hated it.

My "least painful" way of increasing pace was to do races - with all the adrenaline created by the people around you, you naturally go faster - so you learn to increase the pace that way.

Nowadays, I'd probably just use dh to go out with my to drag me along faster than I really want to go.

Prettybird · 16/05/2005 16:37

Lots of typos. Gizim = Gizmo, if you haven't managed to work that one out!

Gizmo · 16/05/2005 16:37

Alright, I've now got to the point at work where I'm so busy I can't decide what to do first so - obviously - I'll stop off here for a quick chat.

Shame about the new shoes, PB, you'll just have to admire them in the cupboard for a while longer . Or invest in some open toe shoes and a small pot of 'rouge noir' for all the other toenails. Very smart.

FG, after races I generally wait until legs don't actually feel stiff and sore and then carry on at about half the usual workload for a week. Just enough to keep my brain happy, not so much as to test any tired legs too hard. If you're having two or three bad runs in a row, then take a couple of days off and see if the rest helps.

Thanks for the support, PB. A month go I was all fired up to try and get my 10K pb down this weekend, but I've since found out that this is a rather 'rural' 10k which involves climbing over stiles at one point, so I'm not looking out for any records! I haven't been out since last wednesday anyway: I rather need to get a proper training plan and a proper target for the summer, or I shall just drift along and have to start my autumn marathon training from the beginning, as it were.

Anyway, hashing again tonight (of course it must be - it's raining!) so I shall try to measure my speed against some of the boys and see if I'm improving. Or maybe whether my need for a pint is greater than theirs....
