Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Prettybird: if you've got your race diary out - how about the Brass Monkey half marathon in York at the end of January? Very popular, very flat, and although it's a bit of a drive for you, York is a nice place for a romantic weekend away, even in January!

potty1 · 01/09/2005 15:35

Crikey it's all going on here.

Beety - that's bloody marvellous - 10 miles - I am in awe

Gizmo - there's nothing worse than an injured runner pushing you on, lol. My dh is always finding 'nice' routes for me to run. Trouble is they are usually anything but

I've got the HydroActive Challenge 5k on Sunday and then I'm definitely (maybe) signing up for a 10k.

Good luck on Sunday PB and hello hatstand !

Gotta dash!

Prettybird · 01/09/2005 15:37

I'll mention it to dh. We both like York and we have friends near Beverley that we could go and see. (Used to do the commute regularly when I was living in Beverley and going out with dh who was in Glasgow)

It might be just the thing we need to keep us going over the winter - and be nice and fit for going skiing a week or two later!

Talking about winter runs: you don't fancy doing the Tough Guy do you??!!!

Gizmo · 01/09/2005 16:16

Ah, go on, go on, go on, you know you want to. It finishes on the racecourse so you can pretend to be thoroughbred for the last half mile!

Tough Guy??? What sort of girl do you think I am???? I might break a fingernail..... Or get mud on my delicate designer running gear. . Are you seriously thinking of doing it this year?

Hi Potty1, would you like me to suggest some nice runs for you - I'm sure I could find something really, ahem, special

Prettybird · 01/09/2005 17:30

No, I'm not really thinking of doing the Tough Guy - although I am getting a wee bit nostalgic!

Do you want to???? 'Cos I'll probably be doing it (if my war wounds allow it) and it would be cool to meet up.

It's only another 3.5 months of training, after all....

Okey doke, I've put some questions to Jampots so maybe she might be joining us! Although I shouldn't be mumsnetting right now, I have a meeting to prepare for.

Do you know, I'm really surprised that out of all the mumsnetters out there, there isn't a proper, professional personal trainer.

You'd have thought it would be a really good career to combine with with motherhood, wouldn't you?

I'm quite interested in being a personal trainer--but unsure whether there is a market for a 40-plus, asthmatic, overweight trainer with a gammy back! Although, by the time I'm able to run 30 mins without stopping, 3 x pw, I'll have lost that dratted 2st surplus...
Seriously though, I think it would be a great career, especially if you're also doing v sedentary p/t work where you are stuck at a desk, like I am.

It'll probably hit you abut 4 this afternoon - I always used to get a delayed reaction.

OTOH - if you did your stretches properly afterwards, you might be OK!

Gizmo · 02/09/2005 15:06

I'm the same, PB, it's not the morning after, it's the morning after the morning after. Creak....creak.....creak: you'd never think I used to do a regular yoga class

fionagib · 04/09/2005 17:29

was thinking about you today prettyb - blimey wasn't it hot!!! How did it go? Will join you next year, promise!

Prettybird · 05/09/2005 08:58

It was extremely hot! At least 25C.

Still, I fifnished - in a time of 2 hours 13min and c.37 sec. Two things affected my time: the heat, plus my achilles tendon started to go at abot 4 miles. At that point, I could start to feel it, but by 9 miles it was really hurting and by the final mile there was no strength left in it whatsoever, so even if I had wanted to sprint at the edn, I couldn't have, as I was berely managing to run without obvioulsy limping. It's alo kanckered my quadricep (thight muscle) on that leg, as it had to take over some of the "power" required to run (ie it had to "pull" me malong, as my achilles tendon was failing in its job of "propelling" me).

Ironically, leg that has gone isn't the one that gave me bother last time.

So, I am hobbling really badly today - and I doubt I'll be able to run for at least two weeks.

So, even though I am disappointed with my time, I am still proud of myself and my achievement.

The atmosphere was good and afterwards dh (who finsihed in 1 hour 46) and I shated a bottle of bubbly sitting in the sun on the grass in Glasgow Green.

It was very crowded at the start - the first mile took about 11 and a half minutes - but thereafter I ran a pretty even 10 minute/mile race.

Arabica · 05/09/2005 11:00

Well done Prettybird, hope the achilles isn't too badly injured. You deserved that bubbly, hope you are back on your running feet soon.

fionagib · 05/09/2005 11:16

That's an amazing achievement pb. It's a huge distance. I hope your disappointment fizzles away and you can just feel proud of what you've achieved - also hope you feel better physically & recover quickly.

went out for my first run in weeks this a.m. - just 20 mins, loved it and wanna get back into running 4 times a week. Paltry compared to your performance yesterday pb, but am feeling good & back in the swing!
ps... bet that bubbly went STRAIGHT to your head!!

Prettybird · 05/09/2005 11:30

The bubbly was very nice We took a cool back as our "kit" back - and put 4 bubbly glasses, some freezer blocks and chilled bubbly (just cheap Cava from Lidl - we weren't going to waste good stuff! ) to celebrate afterwards.

We were going to meet my Mum & Dad, but they ended up ahvinh to look after a friend's twins and he finished quite a bit before me, so they had already left the Green by the imt edh had picked up the bag from the Changing Tent.

Instead, we shared it with a few lads who passed commnet about our organisation at bring it. I mean, doesn't everyone take a bottle of chilled bubbly and glass champagen flutes to celbrate at the end of a race?! !

Have to say, I did wish we had put in some extra water and some cans of Irn Bru - the wee bottle of water we got in our finshing pack barely touched the sides.

Prettybird · 05/09/2005 11:31

I meant cool bag/kit bag, not cool back!

Excuse the (many!) typos!

Arabica · 05/09/2005 13:30

Lidl is fab, that's where we got DS' like-a-bike. Weird shop, though!

Prettybird · 05/09/2005 13:49

My official time was 2hr 13m 35s - and I was 4,617th (out of 7666 that finished).

We love Lidl - it's halved the cost of our shopping since I started to use it regularly (go there weekly and then also go to Sainbury's every second week for the "luxuries"). It's like I remember supermakets used to be, nearly 40 years ago, when they weren't enormouse places, and you bought what was availabe.

Arabica · 05/09/2005 13:50

Crikey Prettybird, you must be even older than me! (nearly 44)

Prettybird · 05/09/2005 13:56

I was 44 in April - so a wee bit older than you.

I did my first half marathon in 1986 - but the last one I did was in 1997.
