Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hmc - I always find if I don 't take my kit I'm desperate to go out and if I do (like this year) I don't do a thing. There was even an air-conditioned gym at our apartments this year. I'm such a lazy moo sometimes

Have a lovely holiday. Where are you going in Portugal? We were thinking of going there next year.

Lolasmum · 26/08/2005 22:29

Hello. Can I gatecrash this site with a question? I gave birth to dd2 6 weeks today and I'm hoping to start running again after my 6 week check next Tuesday. I saw a cranial osteopath today for dd2 and I mentioned to her my urge to start running again and she said I shouldn't run whilst breast feeding if possible. Is she being alarmist? Have any of you run whilst bfeeding (sorry, this thread is sooo long...)? If so, how many weeks since the birth did you start? I was a regular runner before getting pregnant with dd2 and kept going on the treadmill when pregnant up until I was 20 weeks. I would appreciate your thoughts and views if you've got a minute. Thanks.

Arabica · 27/08/2005 13:27

I've just researched this for a feature, Lola's mum! Assuming you've passed your post-natal health-check and are otherwise fine, I didn't find any reasons why breastfeeders should avoid running. The only issues my sports expert mentioned re breastfeeding mums and strenuous exercise were firstly that you'll still have relaxin in your system which can mean you're more prone to injury; secondly that lactic acid produced by high levels of exertion can be detected in milk and put the baby off her feed (to couter this, feed before exercise or not until a couple of hours afterwards) or alternatively just ensure you work out at around 60% of maximum heart rate (ie more of a jog than a run). Thirdly, at 6 weeks after the birth your boobs will be more sensitive than usual so make sure you have a really supportive sports bra. HTH. If you had a C-section you should wait until 8 weeks or so before running.
If you were a regular runner before the baby you can probably take it up to 70% MHR with no lactic acid problems but this varies from mum to mum.
Good luck & happy running

Hi everyone, i haven't been on this thread for ages but as race day is looming i thought i should come back!

I'm running 3 times/week at the moment doing 1x30 min, 1x40 min & a long run at the weekend.

The shorter runs mid-week are fine but the last few weeks after my long run i've got a really painful headache. I go very red when i run anyway but when i stop it feels like all the blood rushes to my head!

Does anyone else get this or is it just me? Does anyone know what causes this & can i avoid it?

Beetroot, good luck with your 9 miles!

I'm doing the Great South this year. I did the Great North last year, how many are running this year, last year it was 49,000! Have you done the GNR before?

Thanks Arabica. I've got my 6 week check on Tuesday. I had a very easy labour though and I feel absolutely fine so I'm sure I'll pass! Hopefully I'll be able to join this thread soon!

Prettybird · 29/08/2005 09:08

Coldtea - could you be dehydrated?

Beetroot - good luck with your 9 miler.

I didn't manage to do the runs I planned last week - the trip to Iceland took more out of me than expecteed - bith in terms of amount of work, plus energy levels!

So... only managed to get out on the Friday (in the pouring run - thanks to dh for encouraging me when I really didn't feel like it) and did 4 miles. Felt really fresh, and am now down to 9 min mile pace! And still had some energy left at the end!

Did my last long run in advacne of the Great Scottish Run next Sunday - about 8.5 miles or so (judging my the time I was out). Felt quite good - espcially considering the weather was grotty - windy and some rain. Hopefully it will be better next Sunday!

Only planning a cuple of light runs this week - a short run tongiht to loosen off my legs and 4-5 miles on Wednesday.

And then hopefully nice fresh legs for the 13.1 miles on Sunday! I'm expecting to do around 2 hours - still having to beat down hopes of breaking 2 hours - if I do, then great, if not, I will next time. it's more important that I don't blow up - and it is always nicer to be passing people in the second half as opposed tostruggling and having people passing you!

Got our race stuff at the weekend.. They expect us to wear our chip on an ankle strap, saying not to put it on too tight, as your ankles can swell and ideally to wear it over a running sock to prevent chafing. My running socks (as are many runners'!) are too short to do that. Gizmo or Potty1 (or anyone else) - have you ever come across this, and if so, have you had a problem with chafing?

fionagib · 29/08/2005 09:36

Hi folks - prettybird, am v v embarrassed to confess that i have hardly run over the school summer hols and am just not up to doing the half marathon. Could reel off billions of excuses, but the main one now is that my dd has just started school and will do half days for another 2 weeks. When she's full timer I'll be able to get out in the mornings like I used to (eves are out of the question as dh working very late).

I'm going to call the raceline and see if I can have my entry deferred till next year... here's hoping! So impressed that you've kept going, and best of luck for next sunday..... I could feel like a pathetic failure but just think, well, there's always next year... xxx

Prettybird · 29/08/2005 10:00

Hope you do manage to get your entry deferred.

Don't feel bad - I have to admit it's been a real struggle trying to get out, which is why I've had to (try to) give up hope of breaking 2 hours. Couldn't have done it without the massive support of dh.

On a separate topic- how is your dd enjoying school? Ds also started recently (18 August) and is on half days until the September Weekend (another 4 weeks). He seems to be enjoying it - not that he chooses to tell us what he's being doing ("nothing" ).

Also - was it you that wrote the article in Red about the pace of modern life? Read it on holiday (don't normally get Red, but had already read Good Houspekeeping and needed something for the plane) - and was amused, as it is one of our mantras/bugbears at the moment. Dh had ordered "In Praise of Slow", but it hadn't arrived in time to take on holiday.

Keep on running when you can!

potty1 · 29/08/2005 11:30

Fiona - hope you can get deferred.

Prettybird - I've only ever worn the chip you thread onto your laces. Good luck, don't forget to enjoy yourself.

And where's Twink?

Prettybird · 29/08/2005 11:34

Potty1 - it looks exactly like the one that you thread through your laces.

But I am worried about just doing that because a) they haven't provided the instructions for doing it that way (which way should the barrel point?), and
b) what happens if the sensor is somehow set up in a way that it needs the chip to be at ankle level.

Arabica · 29/08/2005 14:22

Lolasmum I forgot to mention stress incontinence This is another important reason why new mums should take it easy, especially in the first three months: your pelvic floor will still be recovering from pregnancy/birth, thus increasing risk of SI.

Fame at last, missed on Mumsnet !! Thanks Potty

I've been in the Far East for the last 5 1/2 weeks, trying to train on a treadmill (hate it !!) in a gym that even with air-con was 25+ degrees. I logged in when I could but found that on dial-up the thread was toooo big, hence the odd comment when I could access via broadband.

I caused some Thais to nearly die laughing when they saw me hill training on Ko Samui in 35 degrees (9am). I ran up the (steep) hill to the top where there was a hotel with a security guard on the gate, jogged down and by the time I'd got up for the 2nd time, he'd called his mates to come and watch. I was knackered by that point but personal pride meant I HAD to drag myself up again...

The heat & boredom of the treadmill meant I've done short, fast stuff - not ideal for the GNR, although I did manage 10k on it once, and got a PB !

Glad to see there's been loads of activity here, hope you can get back into it soon Fiona.

Twink · 29/08/2005 18:28

Prettybird, have a look here for chip info, it certainly looks to me like you can attach it to your shoe.

Races I've done with them have always said to have the pole bit pointing down whether attached to shoe or ankle.

Good luck

Twink · 29/08/2005 18:33

Beety, sounds like you're doing really well. Do you enjoy training or is it just a means to an end ?

Have you raced 10k's ? They can get quite addictive and training for them needn't take over your life in the way the the longer races do. You also recover much more quickly so can do more of them.

Alternatively, pop into your local sports shop & pick up a copy of Marathon News.. Closing date for FLM entries is 21st October

Hope you're taking in nice n easy this week prettyb! dd is loving school thanks, is quite 'old' to start - aged five and a half - she starts full days week after next. Yes, I did the red feature about 'slow' living... shame that I've applied the principal to my running regime! Am gonna have to put running aside until dd in f/t school, unless I can haul myself out before dh goes to work.

Twink - your exotic life!!!

Prettybird · 30/08/2005 11:22

Fionagib: I'm taking things so easy I didn't go out last night I had planned! [grin[ I'll see about going out tonight for an easy 3 miles - but it won't be the end of the world if I don't.

The important thing is that I get out tomorrow for a pace 4 miles - and then relax until the Big Day!

Glad your dd is enjoying school. She must have been ready. In Glasgow the P1s are on half days until the September Weekend (another 4 weeks).

Have you had any luck with with deferring your entry?

I'm sure you'll be out there running again soon!

Beetroot - if you've been for a 9 mile run, then a 10k race will be no problem!

fionagib · 30/08/2005 12:31

am in awe beetroot!!!

And sick of my jelly belly (which has crept in during my running 'lull') so am gonna get out tomorrow am before dh goes to work, even if it's just for 20 mins. 7 am.... uuurrgrhhh....

am very inspired by the talk on here

prettyb (or anyone who's up for glasgow on sun) d'you know anyone who might want my number and chip etc for sunday? don't want money, just don't like it going to waste.

Beety - there are some Cancer Research 10ks. I'm thinking of doing one at Weston Park, Staffs in October.

Have a look here

Welcome back Twink

Prettybird · 30/08/2005 12:54

Beetroot - there are 10ks all over the country at fairly regular intervals.

I'm sure the Runners World web site will be able to give you details.

Good luck with your 9 miles tomorrow.
