Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you want me to come cheer you on? Or direct you to the best pasta place the day before? I'm in Newcastle!

monkeytrousers · 30/08/2005 14:53

Taxi! Get the train Beety. It's much cheeper and only takes 20 mins to Durham. I'll put you on the right one if youlike.

monkeytrousers · 30/08/2005 14:54

Or you could run...it's about 10 miles..

No, you would get the metro from airport direct to the train station. Will take 20 mns to Durham from there.

Are you asking me?

I wouldn't have a clue, Beety. I could ask someone at the gym though, if you'd like?

4.30 sounds about right.

Even if it takes you half an hour to cross the line and a whole three hours to do the run (I'm sure it'll only take you 2 and a half), plus another 20 minutes to get "processed" at the end, it'll still only be 2.30. That gives you two hours to get back into Durham - and plenty of time to recover and reflect on your achievement on the train back home!

Calling all speezy gazelles out there...

ANYONE WANT FREE CHIP AND RACE NUMBER FOR HALF MARATHON THIS SUNDAY IN GLASGOW???

Have failed dismally to train over the summer (also failed to get my butt out of bed at 7 this a.m. for a run...double failure... and been unable to deffer my race entry)

Prettybird, know any glaswegian runners who could be persuaded to run with you on sunday and need a chip?

Prettybird · 31/08/2005 09:29

Sorry Fiona - don't know anyone.

Gizmo · 31/08/2005 11:17

I'm getting excited for the GNR'ers today!

coldtea · 31/08/2005 11:44

Beetroot, just to second 4.30pm sounds very reasonable.

To give you an idea of time, the race is sectioned into predicted finish times, we started at the sub 2hrs 30 mins(word of warning-not everybody starts where they should & we had people who started with us who were walking in the first 5 mins!).

Starting where we did we crossed the start line just after 11.20am & ran it in 2hrs 28mins.

Have you tried using a race time calculator it predicted my GNR time spot on when i put my 10k time in.

Arabica · 31/08/2005 11:53

I'm just checking in to tell you I'm going out for a jog (yes, despite extreme heat--the park has a nice shady area)because otherwise I am worried I'll fritter the time away & before i know it, it will be time to collect DS from the childminder.

Gizmo · 31/08/2005 12:48

Blimey Arabica - that is dedication.

I, meanwhile, will be going to the pub....

Arabica · 31/08/2005 21:00

I almost melted but I am v v glad I got off my butt and went out: I am now doing 8 min runs X 3, next week 12 min runs x 3! My aim is to complete the 5km race on 18 Sept in under 37 min (the time I did RFL back in 2000 before DS). Then, I want to train for a 10km...

Prettybird · 01/09/2005 08:49

Well done Arabica. It sounds like you are well on course for your 5k.

I'm really pleased with myself - went out last night for a pace 4 miles and did is in 33m 34s - compared to 37m 10s on Friday. I've broken thrugh the 9 minute/mile barrier! I did really push and had very little left at the end - but I am still really pleased.

It's now rest until the big day (Sunday). I have no intentions of trying to run at that pace over 13.1 miles - but I might have managed to inject a wee bit of additional pace into my legs. I'm planning on starting out at 9 min 30s/mile and seeing how I feel. I'd much rather be overtaking people in the second half than blowing up and going "backwards".

fionagib · 01/09/2005 09:51

Gizmo, sorry to hear you feel down, hope you feel better soon - rest up, take care of yourself.

Arabica, you're inspiring! Am getting revved up emotionally, if not physically, and feel I NEED to get out running again, has been far too long. Am just gonna have to figure out how to squish in a run that's NOT before dh goes to work, as can't make that work for me....

And prettyb - GO GO GO on Sunday!! (But not too fast of course!) Hope you're pleased with your time, but most of all hope you enjoy the experience... 13.1 miles, so impressive (maybe I'll join you next year....) Good luck xxxxx
